I want to see Cave's Gladiator sequel.

Maron is hard to take sometimes, even with a great guest - he just seems like a genuinely unpleasant person to be around.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Monday, 8 July 2013 23:05 (ten years ago) link

I don't find that he seems unpleasant at all, actually--but I like his pre-interview ramblings so what do I know (his TV show is painfully bad however)

Iago Galdston, Monday, 8 July 2013 23:23 (ten years ago) link

I wonder just what the demographics of Maron's audience are. I can understand a little bit of feigned ignorance on Maron's part if half of his audience are people who have no idea who Nick Cave, Stinson, etc. are...

Would have expected Maron to pick up on the Grinderman albums - talk about mid-life crisis rage.

Elvis Telecom, Monday, 8 July 2013 23:26 (ten years ago) link

You can find a synopsis of Cave's proposed Gladiator sequel online, it sounds fucking awesome.

Simon H., Monday, 8 July 2013 23:29 (ten years ago) link

it sounds quite a bit like that "Casca" series of novels by Barry Sadler, the guy who sang "Ballad of the Green Berets"-- Roman soldier who stabs Jesus on the cross is cursed to remain alive until the 2nd coming and fight as a soldier in every war.

I really have no strong opinions one way or the other on Jonah Hill, but he's a great guest on WTF.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Friday, 12 July 2013 18:21 (ten years ago) link

I feel like that nick cave interview was a v accurate reflection of my interactions with a lot of America. Same language but different approaches to unknown people, maybe? Something gets very fucked up in sending and receiving signals or expectations of how the other person will respond or SOMETHING. I certainly don't think it's intentional from either side.

educate yourself to this reality (sunny successor), Saturday, 13 July 2013 16:53 (ten years ago) link

the interview with Open Mike Eagle wasn't as embarrassing as it could have been, though Maron kept throwing out Andy Rooney style questions: "Why are there so many people on the stage? What are they all doing up there?"

iggy pop ep is so good

Pamela Adlon ep is pretty good. I like her.

He made the Joe Rogan podcast bearable, I wish he'd talk about politics more (or maybe I just miss those eps of WTF)

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Thursday, 18 July 2013 06:16 (ten years ago) link

No, I think he's been pretty explicitly disengaged from his political past. It is a pity.

Daniel_Rf, Thursday, 18 July 2013 11:00 (ten years ago) link

So the Yorke interview was done back when the Atoms for Peace album was being recorded, but Maron waited until 5 months after the album came out to release it?

President Keyes, Monday, 22 July 2013 10:40 (ten years ago) link

Yeah, I have no idea what factors dictate when he'll release an interview, but it actually way more fun to hear than I was expecting.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Monday, 22 July 2013 16:18 (ten years ago) link

AFP are touring now, so maybe that was part of his reasoning?

kaiju rolling stone cover (Sufjan Grafton), Monday, 22 July 2013 16:25 (ten years ago) link

I am surprised to learn that marc maron still doesn't understand "how the music gets on the vinyl"

kaiju rolling stone cover (Sufjan Grafton), Monday, 22 July 2013 16:30 (ten years ago) link

^ schtick

eau de feet (sic), Monday, 22 July 2013 16:33 (ten years ago) link

it gets there through AUTHENTICITY

President Keyes, Monday, 22 July 2013 16:35 (ten years ago) link

Not sure what I was expecting, but thought it was a kinda boring. Not as cringe-worthy as it could have been at least.

sofatruck, Monday, 22 July 2013 16:35 (ten years ago) link

I guess I just imagined Thom Yorke being an unpleasant person to talk to, and he really wasn't.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Monday, 22 July 2013 16:36 (ten years ago) link

Listened to the Seth Rogen one this weekend on a long walk--fun one.

only dogg forgives (Eazy), Monday, 22 July 2013 16:47 (ten years ago) link

That "record making is voodoo magic of authenticity" intro is one of the most punch in the face worthy things I've heard him spout off about. Have to take a break before I listen to the interview.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 22 July 2013 17:38 (ten years ago) link

yeah, I want to send him a paragraph-long email explaining how the music gets on the vinyl. but I also don't want to ruin the *magic* for him.

kaiju rolling stone cover (Sufjan Grafton), Monday, 22 July 2013 17:55 (ten years ago) link

Each groove is carved by a master craftsman

President Keyes, Monday, 22 July 2013 17:57 (ten years ago) link

Thanks for reminding me why I skip the intros.

sofatruck, Monday, 22 July 2013 18:52 (ten years ago) link

I always feel bad for his girlfriend whenever he starts talking about his stupid record player (WITH TUBES!) and making people listen to music on it. definitely one of those guys who puts a record on and stares right at you expectantly until you say how great it sounds so he can yell "IT'S THE TUBES!" at you

brio, Monday, 22 July 2013 19:55 (ten years ago) link

yeah, he is likely the Alexandra Guarnaschelli of tube-and-vinyl-based sound system reaction judging

kaiju rolling stone cover (Sufjan Grafton), Monday, 22 July 2013 20:58 (ten years ago) link

The IFC show has been renewed. Oh joy.

(I quit after two episodes.)

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Tuesday, 23 July 2013 16:24 (ten years ago) link

now you're going to be forced to watch another 18 of them ;_;

eau de feet (sic), Tuesday, 23 July 2013 19:01 (ten years ago) link

so Maron recounts Cale saying "Are we going to talk about my new album?" before playing the interview where he doesn't actually say that.

President Keyes, Monday, 29 July 2013 13:51 (ten years ago) link

I laughed at: "They didn't send it to me." "Who is 'they'?"

President Keyes, Monday, 29 July 2013 13:52 (ten years ago) link

that's Maron's "the dog ate my homework"

brio, Monday, 29 July 2013 13:58 (ten years ago) link

also he makes it sound like Cale demanded to talk about the new album - when in fact, as you point out, Maron brings it up and Cale almost immediately says "We don't have tot talk about it if you don't want to..."

I love Maron and WTF - but he should seriously consider going down to 1 interview per week.

brio, Monday, 29 July 2013 14:14 (ten years ago) link

Why?

waterface, Monday, 29 July 2013 14:21 (ten years ago) link

so he can dedicate some time to preparing for his interviews

brio, Monday, 29 July 2013 14:25 (ten years ago) link

lol like he would do that

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Monday, 29 July 2013 14:26 (ten years ago) link

ha fair enough

maybe I'm just Maron-ed out

brio, Monday, 29 July 2013 14:28 (ten years ago) link

lol "prepare"

the pen is mightier than the penisword (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 29 July 2013 15:08 (ten years ago) link

I just wish someone who was better versed or gave a fuck could get the musician interviews. Cale is very engaging, despite Marc being his usual unprepared self and riding his pet topics.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 29 July 2013 15:10 (ten years ago) link

someone needs to invent a way to like killfile maron out of his own podcast

Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 29 July 2013 15:20 (ten years ago) link

i accidentally got caught up listening to the into abt his eating head cheese and feeling bad abt himself for it and i was just like wtf am i doing

johnny crunch, Monday, 29 July 2013 15:24 (ten years ago) link

he should start talking to nutritionists or dieticians so he really cares abt the interviews

johnny crunch, Monday, 29 July 2013 15:25 (ten years ago) link

I've started two episodes of this (Fogerty, Stinson) and bailed out early both times.

things are going to get better or worse (WilliamC), Monday, 29 July 2013 15:29 (ten years ago) link

Both of those interviews are awesome

waterface, Monday, 29 July 2013 15:40 (ten years ago) link

I hate it, because I'm a fan of most the musicians he's interviewed over time, but he interviews with comics are generally better because it doesn't feel like he's puffing up and fronting. Well, maybe sometimes, just because that's who he is. But he's more at ease with fellow comics.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Monday, 29 July 2013 15:43 (ten years ago) link

He's definitely going more for cool anecdotes from the musicians than for deep analysis of craft, though sometimes the musicians get into that despite Maron. Like, in the Cale interview there are a few nice stories about Nico and Lou, but I liked hearing him talk about Houston rap and stuff a bit more.

President Keyes, Monday, 29 July 2013 15:48 (ten years ago) link

really I guess I just wish there was somebody other than Maron doing WTF-style long-form interviews with musicians. Sometimes he gets a great conversation out of a musician - I loved Fogerty, Darnielle, Iggy and Stinson among others - but too often I just feel like they could have been a lot better. I think it's more his comfort level than research or knowledge...like when comedian interviews go off the rails a little bit, Maron can bust balls or find common ground but when musicians fluster him he gets all weird.

Tom Scharpling's Low Times podcast seems to be going for a musicians WTF thing but it's pretty hit & miss so far - and the musicians I don't know I find a lot less engaging than the comics I don't know on WTF.

brio, Monday, 29 July 2013 16:16 (ten years ago) link

Dave Alvin interview still my favorite of the musician ones.
