whatsapp, wechat, line, etc. all better than imessage

乒乓, Wednesday, 21 August 2013 19:10 (ten years ago) link

text messages are free? i don't pay for a text plan (which a min $10 extra on my carrier now, bleah) so iMessage is a godsend; most of my friends have iPhones or iPods

Nhex, Wednesday, 21 August 2013 19:14 (ten years ago) link

xpost the ppl i give a shit abt talking to don't use that shit

markers, Wednesday, 21 August 2013 19:17 (ten years ago) link

v useful to be able to "text" using the internet if you live in a mobile phone developing country, e.g. the usa.

caek, Wednesday, 21 August 2013 19:22 (ten years ago) link

I've got one important iMessage group chat and it's useful for messaging my partner who has an old slider phone and limited texts, but has an iPod touch. Nobody I know uses whatsapp, as far as I know.

i too went to college (silby), Wednesday, 21 August 2013 19:22 (ten years ago) link

yeah a lot of this stuff obv depends on who you're trying to reach

markers, Wednesday, 21 August 2013 19:34 (ten years ago) link

iMessage is a lot better than those others because it's transparent and will default back to text, imo

google needs to get their shit together in some ways, though, because I would text a friend and his response would go to google talk back in the day since I wasn't on an android device but DID have a google talk acct

i wonder how hangouts is doing for them

markers, Wednesday, 21 August 2013 19:41 (ten years ago) link

it works better, in my experience, when it comes to sending things intelligently

mh, Wednesday, 21 August 2013 19:42 (ten years ago) link

does gchat have an official app? i would use that all the time

Nhex, Wednesday, 21 August 2013 19:44 (ten years ago) link

i think hangouts might be what you're looking for

markers, Wednesday, 21 August 2013 19:46 (ten years ago) link

someone back me up on this tho

markers, Wednesday, 21 August 2013 19:46 (ten years ago) link

yeah, gchat is/will be retired in lieu of hangouts and it has an app

mh, Wednesday, 21 August 2013 19:48 (ten years ago) link

how many of you use gchat and how extensively? i'm curious b/c, while i've used it before, i def don't use it now and uninstalled hangouts from my ipad

markers, Wednesday, 21 August 2013 19:49 (ten years ago) link

no one uses aim, right?

markers, Wednesday, 21 August 2013 19:49 (ten years ago) link

i can't remember the last time i logged onto that, but it has to have been at least like . . . well over three/four years ago or w/e

markers, Wednesday, 21 August 2013 19:50 (ten years ago) link

every day at work to chat with a couple non-coworker friends intermittently

mh, Wednesday, 21 August 2013 19:50 (ten years ago) link

I think a couple ilxors use aim but I'm not going to name names

mh, Wednesday, 21 August 2013 19:50 (ten years ago) link

no

socki (s1ocki), Wednesday, 21 August 2013 19:57 (ten years ago) link

i dont have a single friend who uses those, so they are useless

socki (s1ocki), Wednesday, 21 August 2013 19:57 (ten years ago) link

and imessage and text live in teh same window—if someone im imessaging isn't data-online, it'll default to text. and vice versa. i never have to guess if someone has got my message or not.

socki (s1ocki), Wednesday, 21 August 2013 19:58 (ten years ago) link

i realised a girl was too young for me once because she asked me if i was on whatsapp

socki (s1ocki), Wednesday, 21 August 2013 19:59 (ten years ago) link

high fives

mh, Wednesday, 21 August 2013 20:00 (ten years ago) link

I use facebook messages for people if I don't have their phone number but talk to them on there. Plus it's more casual and kind of a reasonable default

mostly drunk-messaging s1ocki though

mh, Wednesday, 21 August 2013 20:02 (ten years ago) link

imessage is cool in that you can send anigifs

乒乓, Wednesday, 21 August 2013 20:05 (ten years ago) link

the feeling when u see the message change to green. terrible

乒乓, Wednesday, 21 August 2013 20:05 (ten years ago) link

ooh

all the ones that pretend to be more interesting than text messages have 'stickers' now :/

mh, Wednesday, 21 August 2013 20:06 (ten years ago) link

that animated cat sticker thing on fb is cool though, he's chill and also a cat

mh, Wednesday, 21 August 2013 20:06 (ten years ago) link

wait, so you guys don't just have gmail / gchat open in a browser tab all day long at work?

Nhex, Wednesday, 21 August 2013 20:07 (ten years ago) link

sure do

mh, Wednesday, 21 August 2013 20:08 (ten years ago) link

it was too hard to figure out how to get people not on my list onto my list and people on my list off of my list. also having unread chats show up in your inbox, terrible

乒乓, Wednesday, 21 August 2013 20:08 (ten years ago) link

hangouts is really shit at list management, this is true

mh, Wednesday, 21 August 2013 20:09 (ten years ago) link

am i the only person in the world using adium for gchat

socki (s1ocki), Wednesday, 21 August 2013 20:11 (ten years ago) link

last man chatting

socki (s1ocki), Wednesday, 21 August 2013 20:11 (ten years ago) link

i had all these people who had only ever emailed me once, maybe because of a craigslist ad or something, on my gchat list.... made me feel like a stranger in my own inbox

乒乓, Wednesday, 21 August 2013 20:12 (ten years ago) link

I do sometimes, it's a good client (re: adium)

mh, Wednesday, 21 August 2013 20:13 (ten years ago) link

also whenever two people want to chat w/ each other but they both had gchat set to 'invisible'... ah... is there anything sadder... a sadder story was never told

乒乓, Wednesday, 21 August 2013 20:13 (ten years ago) link

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 21 August 2013 20:13 (ten years ago) link

乒乓, Wednesday, 21 August 2013 20:17 (ten years ago) link
