question for those who've updated very recently or about to, do you remember whether upon installation the phone asks for the SIM PIN code? I've always had it deactivated and now completely forgot what the code is so I wouldn't want to block my phone because of the update.

didn't for me (UK contract)

Fizzles, Thursday, 19 September 2013 07:31 (ten years ago) link

hey podcast app, how come nobody loves u

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 19 September 2013 07:54 (ten years ago) link

xp yeah, don't think you ever get asked for the SIM PIN when updating, only on first purchase or if you take the SIM out and put it back in. (UK based also).

groovypanda, Thursday, 19 September 2013 08:12 (ten years ago) link

ok thanks!

I was planning to finally, finally replace my iPod Touch-plus-dumbphone combo with an iPhone 5S, but am still a bit peeved that my 4th-gen iPod touch, a product Apple was still selling just four months ago, cannot be upgraded to iOS7.

im actually kind of furious that they updated EVERYTHING except this stupid, useless, totally buggy and inconsistent app. it doesnt even "look" ios7

socki (s1ocki), Thursday, 19 September 2013 13:52 (ten years ago) link

splitting podcasts off from the music app is easily the worst thing that has ever happened in the history of apple

乒乓, Thursday, 19 September 2013 14:15 (ten years ago) link

Actually, I got used to separate podcasts quick, and now like it that way.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Thursday, 19 September 2013 14:16 (ten years ago) link

it might have been ok if the app had had any reason for existing or had made any sense at all, i swear to god, it's bizarrely buggy and bad

socki (s1ocki), Thursday, 19 September 2013 14:18 (ten years ago) link

why r u guys listening to podcasts anyway, only listen to rap and country --steve jobs

lag∞n, Thursday, 19 September 2013 14:18 (ten years ago) link

i dont much care that it's a separate app. i care that it lists podcasts i don't have on it anymore, it shows unread counts for them for some reason, it shows un-downloaded podcasts for some podcasts and not others, it's just... a total mess

socki (s1ocki), Thursday, 19 September 2013 14:18 (ten years ago) link

the zooming effect is kind of hilarious, like POW! I'm jumping into Tiny Tower, ZOOM! I'm leaping back out to the home screen, WHEE! I'm diving into Zing etc

it's like my phone/iPad is being controlled by a student driver attempting to master a stick shift

You are kind, I am jerkface (DJP), Thursday, 19 September 2013 14:19 (ten years ago) link

heh, i agree

still undecided on the thin font. love the new pop up drawer though with the wifi, flashlight (can't believe it took them this long), camera and other options

Nhex, Thursday, 19 September 2013 14:23 (ten years ago) link

it's just... a total mess

last night i deleted a bunch of podcasts to make space on my phone, made sure itunes was set to sync ALL episodes of ALL podcasts, made sure that i had at least the most recent episode of each podcast i wanted, then synced. then synced again just to make sure. this morning going to work at least half of my podcasts showed zero episodes.

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 19 September 2013 14:30 (ten years ago) link

it just simply.... DOESN'T WORK. AT ALL. if you manage your podcasts exclusively through your phone and never sync, everything's fine and actually the app works pretty well. but the moment you sync it, it is a complete crapshoot what will be there.

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 19 September 2013 14:31 (ten years ago) link

but yeah. the fact that it didn't even get a facelift and is supposedly a core app is pretty nelsonlaugh.jpg

you know that you can get podcasts back into the music app, right? just delete the podcasts app from your phone. hey presto.

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 19 September 2013 14:33 (ten years ago) link

also there are other podcast apps. i use downcast. it's a little overstuffed but it's way better than the official app.

congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 19 September 2013 14:35 (ten years ago) link

I think this is all part of Apple's not-so-secret plan to punish people for listening to podcasts

You are kind, I am jerkface (DJP), Thursday, 19 September 2013 14:35 (ten years ago) link

the fact that there is STILL not a mechanism for charging for podcasts makes me think there is a not-so-secret plan to punish people for making podcasts in the first place

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 19 September 2013 14:41 (ten years ago) link

the only reason i've ever been able to think of for that is that people include unlicensed music on their podcasts and if apple provides a payment platform for that then they could be held responsible by the rights holders

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 19 September 2013 14:43 (ten years ago) link

tbf that's a pretty good reason

I still like the punitive theory tho

new folders suuuuuck

call all destroyer, Thursday, 19 September 2013 14:52 (ten years ago) link

for awhile i've been thinking about taking everything out of folders and just having a screen per category, this will probably push me there

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 19 September 2013 14:52 (ten years ago) link

The Music app on the iPad is a fucking abortion.

oh yeah, this is me, so I guess that explains why I'm fine with it.

i finally just figured out how to delete this stupid fucking nightvale podcast from my phone

乒乓, Thursday, 19 September 2013 15:06 (ten years ago) link

don't like the ios7 music app on the iphone either tbh

when I first saw it in beta I was like, oh yeah, they'll fix that at some point but guess what nope

the look was greatly improved when I changed the text size in settings to the smallest value tho

how does one kill an app from running now? in the sub menu you used to hold the icon till it shook and then cack it, that option appears to be gone.

swipe the app screenshot upwards.

also this automatically update my apps in the background idea is totally awesome save for the fact that it doesnt actually appear to work

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Thursday, 19 September 2013 15:58 (ten years ago) link

ahhhh, swipe the APP not the icon. thanks ledge.

tbh this has been my overall experience with the 5 so I basically go nowhere without a plug these days

You are kind, I am jerkface (DJP), Thursday, 19 September 2013 16:16 (ten years ago) link

I obsessively close apps now, but yeah, the battery life does seem to be taking a hit on my 4s.

this is completely unintuitive and probably a lie but if you do the "reset all settings" thing, it seems to help some weirdness. you have to re-enter all your passwords in apps, though.

beautifully, unapologetically plastic (mh), Thursday, 19 September 2013 16:18 (ten years ago) link

obsessively closing apps never did anything imo

lag∞n, Thursday, 19 September 2013 16:18 (ten years ago) link

I guess if there is some really poorly-behaved app that isn't really closing and the system isn't killing it in memory, then you could have issues

beautifully, unapologetically plastic (mh), Thursday, 19 September 2013 16:19 (ten years ago) link

I noticed especially in Europe that I would have my phone in airplane mode and use the camera, and the battery would be down to around 35% by 3 PM while my wife's would still be around 80% (she also has a 5)

You are kind, I am jerkface (DJP), Thursday, 19 September 2013 16:20 (ten years ago) link

xp i don't agree with that - i've definitely noticed if system starts chugging and halting when app switching, closing a bunch of them will free up some memory and it'll go a little smoother

Nhex, Thursday, 19 September 2013 16:20 (ten years ago) link

I have ran into exactly one app with that problem, and it was because they fucked up and didn't implement location settings correctly and it was fixed in the next version

generally, once an app is backgrounded it can only use processor time if it uses audio, if it uses the new api that lets apps do background updates (was not available pre-iOS7) or if they fucked up and it's never actually backgrounding

if it's that last case and they don't fix it, delete that shit

beautifully, unapologetically plastic (mh), Thursday, 19 September 2013 16:21 (ten years ago) link

Let me labor under the illusion that iPhones don't boast the most notoriously awful battery performance of any smartphone just a little while longer, plz.

midnight outdoor nude frolic up north goes south (Eric H.), Thursday, 19 September 2013 16:21 (ten years ago) link

Nhex, that is true because it's chugging a little because your memory is full and it's actually closing memory-resident apps for you.

beautifully, unapologetically plastic (mh), Thursday, 19 September 2013 16:21 (ten years ago) link

dude android still is one zillion times worse re: battery life

beautifully, unapologetically plastic (mh), Thursday, 19 September 2013 16:22 (ten years ago) link

Sucks to be everyone.

midnight outdoor nude frolic up north goes south (Eric H.), Thursday, 19 September 2013 16:22 (ten years ago) link

I don't know which app is causing the problem but I've noticed that my cell reception goes into the pits if I have too many apps backgrounded; wondering if that behavior goes away with iOS 7

You are kind, I am jerkface (DJP), Thursday, 19 September 2013 16:22 (ten years ago) link

ya iphones have the best battery life fwiw

lag∞n, Thursday, 19 September 2013 16:23 (ten years ago) link

(for example, I'll be standing next to my wife and her phone will have 4 bars LTE and I'll have 1 bar 4G until I close some apps)
