I had to stop listening to the Henry Rollins appearance on Garlin. He really enjoyed laughing at his own jokes and only seemed vaguely aware of who Henry Rollins was.

the colin hay one is weird, like listening to 2 strangers talk in a departure lounge

Veg OTM that Lena Dunham convo was great. The recent Bob Odenkirk one was pretty good too. And of course LD.

Garlin is Baron Von Festival

The other interview podcast I listen to alongside WTF is Alec Baldwin's.

... (Eazy), Monday, 7 October 2013 17:02 (ten years ago) link

i cant stand that podcast even though i love alec baldwin.

No more kisses (sunny successor), Monday, 7 October 2013 17:10 (ten years ago) link

i was really psyched for the Baldwin one but it bums me out that the conversations are so short and weirdly edited with voiceover and shit

that Dick Cavett convo should have been 2 hours at LEAST

I've listened to a few of Jeff Garlin's podcasts now, and they're pretty good (even the JJ Abrams one is good for gossipy showbiz anecdotes), it's just a shame that they're recorded before an audience. Richard Herring's Theatre Podcast is the same, and the problem with this format is that both guest and host end up forever going for a gag, as opposed to the slightly more conversational WTF. But whatever.

Every time I think I'm done he gets someone like Laura Dern who overwhelms his tics and knocks it out of the park.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 9 October 2013 14:46 (ten years ago) link

Yeah, that was a great one. Probably one of the best.

I love that he still has great difficulty remembering when things happened in the eighties, though. i.e. there is NO WAY Blue Velvet could've come out in 1981.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 9 October 2013 15:17 (ten years ago) link

Drug abuse does a number on your perception of time.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 9 October 2013 15:22 (ten years ago) link

I think it's more that he's in denial about how old he is. Laura Dern was talking about being a teenager when she starred in Blue Velvet so he decided he must have been in high school then too.

"If you just keep doing it long enough in Canada (or UK), they just give you your own TV show"

at least a half-dozen Canadian comedians have politely told him this isn't true by now.

also boring discussions about where in New Jersey Maron's family is from relative to where in New Jersey the guest's family is from, followed by discussions of where in Florida their respective relatives live now

whenever i hear the bit that's like what am i ~doing~ in this intro i am transported vividly into some scene of him in the studio doing repeat takes trying to get the neurotic inflection right, i can't bear it

Maron's tics are pretty tolerable compared to garlin's

especially doing it 3 hours a week. it's like hanging out with a relative at this point, not nails-on-chalkboard, just a "here we go again" eyeroll when he talks about the time he sauteed the onions perfectly for the lox and onions sandwich yet again

brio, Thursday, 10 October 2013 14:22 (ten years ago) link

I had to stop listening to every episode & only DL ones that I thought I'd really be into. I think in 2013 I've only downloaded 8-10 eps and only listened to 3 lately (Catherine O'Hara, Laura Dern and Michael Keaton, all were complete treats). I also skip the first 11 mins or so because I'm not having it anymore :/

I've Seen rRootage (Will M.), Thursday, 10 October 2013 14:25 (ten years ago) link

that's my method too - he's been on kind of a roll with guests I'm interested in lately though

brio, Thursday, 10 October 2013 14:28 (ten years ago) link

curious if any WTF/MM fans who were previously unfamiliar with Uhh Yeah Dude listened to that ep and had opinions one way or the other

they are a diff kind of comedy podcast, but they are pretty ilx-y, maybe more ilx-y than MM?

brio, Thursday, 10 October 2013 14:51 (ten years ago) link

jump in w/ the latest and work backwards, maybe skim that thread for recs

ᶓ͠סּᴥ͠סּᶔ ᶓͼ᷆ₓͼ᷇ᶔ (gr8080), Thursday, 10 October 2013 14:52 (ten years ago) link

i'm so far behind on these because i couldn't stand the thought of listening to Maron kiss up to Maynard from Tool for an hour and a half, but i finally listened to that ep and it was actually pretty decent. Maynard comes across as really likable and distances himself from the insuffarable Tool fan contingent nicely.

The Homme one is a mixed bag so far.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 10 October 2013 15:38 (ten years ago) link

I started listening to uyd after hearing them on wtf. Thought they seemed really funny and likeable. Listen all the time now and only dip back in to maron occasionally

sonderborg, Thursday, 10 October 2013 22:06 (ten years ago) link

The Homme one is really scattered. They talk a lot, but not really about anything.

I don't know if I just picked the wrong time to dip into UYD or what, but the two episodes I listened to earlier this year were insufferable.
