Bummer episode. I actually enjoyed the Gillian scenes the most, which is unusual. I had a glimmer of sympathy with her for the first time, I guess because she was too strung out to be her awful, conniving self.

I'm starting to have a similar problem with this show as with GoT, where there are too many characters and plot-lines, so the ones I like don't get enough screen time.

Jesus, that ending. Wasn't expecting that to come so soon after Eddie's promotion, but still. Jesus. I find it so easy to take Nucky's "wily businessman with chutzpah and connections" schtick at face value that I often forget quite how poisonous a character he is

Shit, I was just thinking during the episode how glad I was that Eddie has been getting more screentime and being developed.

Solid season so far anyway. Maybe not as enjoyable as 3, but it's matured into a very assured show.

Really liking how emotionally resonant so much of this season has been since we've been following these people for so long.

I wasn't expecting TWO intense hate fucks in one ep, but hey. They needed to pay that off. Poor Chalky, he is completely gone. Loved the shot of his reaction to the performance (which was incredible)

Brakhage, Thursday, 17 October 2013 21:51 (ten years ago) link

I feel like visually this season has been amazing - but story-wise, not so much.

Porto for Pyros (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Thursday, 17 October 2013 22:11 (ten years ago) link

I like how they're stripping it back and concentrating on smaller stories this season.

I wish to incorporate disco into my small business (chap), Thursday, 17 October 2013 22:48 (ten years ago) link

Something major's got to kick off in the next few eps though I feel.

it's all the smaller stories that are bothering me.

all is forgiven when Harrow & Tommy get a few scenes together <3

The series of shots of Purnsley and Chalky facing off slightly out of focus were great.

Holy shit I love Nelson so much

Also Richard working for Nucky is excellent news

They're doing a good job of making Gillian more sympathetic.

Loved Nucky and Rothstein's exchange about Doyle.

Cool that those Farraday Electric Iron co nobs ended up with flies buzzing around them and inadvertently doing Nelson a favour. It demands a bit of patience this series, because some of the most compelling characters/story arcs disappear for weeks sometimes. The Chalky White end is on fire right now, it was great last week as well.

That smoothie guy romancing Gillian is some kind of Devil/Agent or maybe someone related to the kid she murdered to put in her son's grave. I am sure of it.

Insane Prince of False Binaries (Gukbe), Monday, 25 November 2013 04:37 (ten years ago) link

That was deeply sad :( There is enough shit going off for them to follow up this series with a 26 episode Sopranos style thing.

Damo Suzuki's Parrot, Monday, 25 November 2013 08:02 (ten years ago) link

yeah, the last ten minutes of this was rough. partially made up for by the Eli in Chicago reveal, but still... oof. poor Chalky.

Never thought I'd say this, but I feel really sorry for Gillian! Downer ending all round. Great season.

I wish to incorporate disco into my small business (chap), Wednesday, 27 November 2013 17:35 (ten years ago) link

Gretchen Mol, Shea Whigham, Jeffrey Wright, and Michael K. Williams were the MVPs this year. Haven't really been a fan of Chalky as a character before this season but now that he actually had something to do (rather than just standing around and looking really pissed off all the time) he's been great. And Michael K. sold the hell out of that death scene

Number None, Wednesday, 27 November 2013 17:55 (ten years ago) link

Brian Geraghty was pretty awesome this season as well, he just made you absolutely loath his charcter from scene one. I was actively rooting for him to get offed from the start.

"He's your father Will. And my brother. I'm not the man you think I am"

This was such a great line, encapsulates everything I enjoy about Nucky, pinning him down is like trying to catch smoke. Other high points included Chalky's wails as the Feds raided the club, Eli's straight up beatdown on Slimy Slimerson and particularly the Narcisse / Hoover scene. Hoover such an entitled ass, almost seeming to justify some of Narcisse's rhetoric, but equally Hoover revealing all the ways that Narcisse is a fraud. Zoom-in for "......Sir" complete with facial twitch was brill.

Windsor Davies, Thursday, 28 November 2013 21:06 (ten years ago) link

I'm only up to episode 5 but:

1) The Eddie subplot was a little obvious/telegraphed. though not unenjoyable to watch
2) Is there no Margaret this season? cuz if so >:(

next episode my man

Number None, Monday, 2 December 2013 20:55 (ten years ago) link

this season was kinda meh?

i liked the last couple of episodes but it felt like they had sooo many story threads and none of them really were that interesting, chalky at that house was like cmoooooooooooooooon why are we still heeeere jeez

maggie and rothstein should have gotten more play, I wanted way more scenes of them together

that being said, Eli was A+, that beatdown was crazy

he's a good actor in that role, like a wound up spring

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 2 December 2013 21:18 (ten years ago) link

Thought this was the best season if not the most obviously enjoyable.

Insane Prince of False Binaries (Gukbe), Monday, 2 December 2013 21:21 (ten years ago) link

this season was kinda meh?

Nah I really liked it. Dramatically I think it will prove to have been largely setting up next season, but the writing acting and direction have all been top notch.

So far I would rank them 3>>4>>>2>>>>>1

I wish to incorporate disco into my small business (chap), Monday, 2 December 2013 21:23 (ten years ago) link

There's something really satisfying about this show even when it is being kind of boring

Number None, Monday, 2 December 2013 21:27 (ten years ago) link

I like how Nucky is designed/played to be the ultimate sympathetic bad guy protagonist - he does horrible things, but you always feel like rooting for him because he is so matter-of-fact and rational about everything

Ayn Rand Akbar (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 2 December 2013 21:29 (ten years ago) link

1 and 2 were definitely great, this season and last season I'm kinda lukewarm on

but I still enjoy watching

how do we feel about Patricia Arquette as Sal? Her drawl kinda bugs me but I mostly like her

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 2 December 2013 21:36 (ten years ago) link

I thought she was really good actually, and usually I think she's a bit weak on the old acting.

I wish to incorporate disco into my small business (chap), Monday, 2 December 2013 21:49 (ten years ago) link

And I feel exactly the opposite of you season wise!

I wish to incorporate disco into my small business (chap), Monday, 2 December 2013 21:50 (ten years ago) link

Yah same here, I thought Season 1 was kinda dull tbh, persevered because I had so much free time so why the fuck not, but it wasn't till Jimmy had copped it that I was totally sold. Season 3 was pretty frenetic compared to this one but I think I probably enjoyed them about equally. I like that the show is unafraid of offing big characters, even when they're the ones I love (Richard!! :((( )

I hope we've seen the last of Tommy and Harrow's missus, not because I particularly dislike them but because I'd like the extra time to be used to focus on other characters. Now that Richard, Purnsley, Jim Knox aren't in it (Gillian too maybe) there ought to be a lot of scope for further exploring some of the other players. Rothstein and Lanksy in partic. I think are basically where Chalky was up until this season - we've not been allowed to forget them and they've been fleshed out a bit, but I think they're definitely ready to become major focuses next season. Rothstein / Margaret storyline could be great watching. As for having Eli / Nelson / Al Capone running in the same crew, I'm already fucking impatient.

Windsor Davies, Monday, 2 December 2013 22:16 (ten years ago) link

this is OTM.

Porto for Pyros (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 2 December 2013 22:18 (ten years ago) link

maybe it's just that i kept letting episodes pile up and then watching them in bunches that I lost the momentum somehow

i demand more rothstein next season

I cannot WAIT for Eli/Nelson/Capone

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 2 December 2013 22:18 (ten years ago) link

3+4 absolutely piss on 1+2.

Damo Suzuki's Parrot, Monday, 2 December 2013 22:26 (ten years ago) link

I don't think this show really found itself until halfway through season 2, with Jimmy's slouching towards inevitability. S3 was a lot of fun, but this season it came into its own as something approaching the kind of "quality" television it clearly wants to be.

Insane Prince of False Binaries (Gukbe), Monday, 2 December 2013 22:45 (ten years ago) link

I think I just want Jimmy back

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 2 December 2013 22:49 (ten years ago) link

Something oddly magnetic about that drawl, for sure. And the limp! Must remember to cultivate a limp when I hit about 30, wouldn't half look menacing on a quiet street on a dark night

Windsor Davies, Monday, 2 December 2013 22:51 (ten years ago) link

I have had a mild crush on that actor since he was in Dawson's Creek
