I couldn't stand him actually. In the making-of his says he winces when he sees himself on TV, says "It just looks like ME, but pulling funny faces!" And I'm like hmm that's a very accurate self-assessment for an actor.

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 24 February 2009 16:44 (fifteen years ago) link

was going to say "bet he's really like that, mostly"

Mark G, Tuesday, 24 February 2009 16:45 (fifteen years ago) link

I like writing, yes. But as I said: typing hurts me.

I think I'm gonna use this thread as another excuse to plug Limmy's Show, aren't I? Yes I am. On iPlayer till tomorrow night, one-off pilot (at present), only shown on BBC Scotland, best British sketch show I've seen since The Armando Iannucci Shows, can confidently predict will be better than whatever Corden and Horne come up with.

haha, I liked this, particularly that it inexplicably ended with a man in a scarf crying because his ma had had her heid kicked in

EMPIRE STATE HYMEN (MPx4A), Wednesday, 25 February 2009 00:40 (fifteen years ago) link

I especially liked the monologues about signs and guys and mirrors and swings, esp. the swings, which ties into my whole love of silly/serious tightrope walking. I can definitely see the Armando Iannucci influence. Hope it gets picked up for a series proper.

NotEnough, Wednesday, 25 February 2009 07:27 (fifteen years ago) link

none of the trailers are funny the skinny one is a smug twat and the fat one is fat.

FREE DOM AND ETHAN (special guest stars mark bronson), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 12:29 (fifteen years ago) link

so apparently Lesbian Vampire Killers is an actual unfunny movie and not just an unfunny fake movie promo for the Horne and Corden show.

f f murray abraham (G00blar), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 12:33 (fifteen years ago) link

looks like they'll just be Gavin & Smithy in everything now.

Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 12:35 (fifteen years ago) link

Has there been an Unfunny British Comedy of the Noughties, Full of People Off the Telly poll yet?

Free the Northampton 1 (Tom D.), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 12:37 (fifteen years ago) link

Now do you all believe me about what a worthless fucking tosser JC is?

the pinefox, Tuesday, 10 March 2009 12:44 (fifteen years ago) link

still don't get why his bad points make you as angry as that

Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 12:47 (fifteen years ago) link

I thought The Pinefox was against swearing, now he effs and blinds constantly.

I hope Lesbian Vampire Killers is as good as the Ant and Dec movie. Or the Vampire Motorcycle film w/the guys from Boon in.

Reasons to passionately dislike James Corden:

1. Kneejerk hatred of British aspirational working class
2. Is fat
3. Constant reminder of annoying lairy twat in everyone's class at school (may contain elements of 1 and 2)

Hreidarsson The Storm (Matt DC), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 12:52 (fifteen years ago) link

Comedy duo off the telly, one of whom is fat, makes comedy horror film.

Where could they have got that idea from?

chap, Tuesday, 10 March 2009 12:54 (fifteen years ago) link

certainly he is no Nick Frost

Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 12:54 (fifteen years ago) link

Nick Frost's comic repertoire goes a bit beyond 50 different iterations of "Look! A fat man! Isn't that hilarious?" though.

Reasons to passionately dislike James Corden Frank Lampard Chris Moyles:

1. Kneejerk hatred of British aspirational working class
2. Is fat
3. Constant reminder of annoying lairy twat in everyone's class at school (may contain elements of 1 and 2)

Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 12:56 (fifteen years ago) link

There are many more reasons to dislike Chris Moyles than that.

Shannon Whirry & the Bad Brains, Tuesday, 10 March 2009 13:14 (fifteen years ago) link

For the record I think Corden himself is probably a fine person, it's the Gavin and Stacey show that I fucking detest.

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 10 March 2009 13:15 (fifteen years ago) link

I can understand finding G&S fine but fucking detesting Corden a lot more tbh

Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 13:19 (fifteen years ago) link

At least he's not responsible for writing Lesbian Vampire Killers, only for starring in it.

At the moment I seem to end up seeing endless trailers for the Horne & Corden sketch show every time I turn to the BBC; and every time I see one I think: "that's nice, dear, I think you meant to put a joke in though."

Forest Pines Mk2, Tuesday, 10 March 2009 13:24 (fifteen years ago) link

At least he's not responsible for writing Lesbian Vampire Killers

i dunno if this is better - it looks like they've written him as more inane and uncouth than usual

Man, you people can be serious pricks when it comes to overweight people.

Pretty sure ilx loves fattys, [Insert Dom RIP joek here], but not unfunny fatties who are mistaken for funny fatties.

i passed up a chance to see 'enetertaining mr sloane' because horne is in it. i r elitist.
though he looks remarkably like Malcolm McDowell in the press ad.

still, corden should probably fuck off now.

Wow. That was very poor.

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 11 March 2009 00:38 (fifteen years ago) link

Am I the only person who tuned in? I thought this thread would be a cavalcade of derision.

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 12 March 2009 13:31 (fifteen years ago) link

Not even morbid curiosity could tempt me to sit through this. That Ghost-spoofing trailer DOESN'T HAVE ANY JOKES IN.

chap, Thursday, 12 March 2009 13:39 (fifteen years ago) link

I watched it and lolled at several points (the bit where JC can't come for example) while trying not to (I was actually trying to do some work at the time but Mrs. T is a sucker for bad BBC3 comedy) but overall is was not very funny. Still don't understand the hatred for them though. Except that this...

Reasons to passionately dislike James Corden:

2. Is fat

...might explain something.

Say what you like Professor Words (Ned Trifle II), Thursday, 12 March 2009 13:41 (fifteen years ago) link

Just to be clear, Matt and Blueski are saying that one of the reasons to dislike someone is that they are fat, right? With hilarious insights like that you could get a job on Two Pints.

Hreidarsson The Storm (Matt DC), Thursday, 12 March 2009 13:54 (fifteen years ago) link

The only thing that was marginally funny to me was Corden's Gervais impression. Otherwise it is very strange that two guys with a very successful comedy drama have decided to do such a willfully bog-standard sketch show. Doesn't it usually go the other way around?

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 12 March 2009 13:55 (fifteen years ago) link

Two words: Mitchell, Webb.

zero learnt from nero (Neil S), Thursday, 12 March 2009 13:58 (fifteen years ago) link

I saw the first few minutes but then went to bed because, well I'd rather go to bed than watch it. But I thought it was a "live in the studio" thing. So were they performing sketches live in front of an audience?

nate woolls, Thursday, 12 March 2009 13:59 (fifteen years ago) link

According to Corden on Jonathan Ross last week: the studio-filmed ones were, yes.

yeah what the hell Ned

Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Thursday, 12 March 2009 14:25 (fifteen years ago) link

Neil didn't Mitchell & Webb have a radio show, then a sketch show, then Peep Show?

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 12 March 2009 15:15 (fifteen years ago) link

And stand-up/live before the radio show?

Free the Northampton 1 (Tom D.), Thursday, 12 March 2009 15:20 (fifteen years ago) link

they did Peep Show before the television sketch show, although of course that was predated by the radio sketch show and stand-up. But the reason for their decline in quality from Peep Show to their shitty sketch show was because they actually wrote the latter while the Armstrong and Bain wrote the former.

Blackout Crew are the Beatles of donk (jim), Thursday, 12 March 2009 15:24 (fifteen years ago) link

altho of course Armstrong and Bain wrote for the sketch show too, maybe they were the 2 good sketches they got in to every few episodes.

Blackout Crew are the Beatles of donk (jim), Thursday, 12 March 2009 15:25 (fifteen years ago) link

Sketch show wasn't entirely shitty

Free the Northampton 1 (Tom D.), Thursday, 12 March 2009 15:26 (fifteen years ago) link

Fair points everyone. I suppose M&W are arguably an instance of comedians getting ahead of themselves and thinking they are as good at writing as performing, two very different disciplines.

zero learnt from nero (Neil S), Thursday, 12 March 2009 15:28 (fifteen years ago) link

Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Thursday, 12 March 2009 15:30 (fifteen years ago) link

Sir Digby Chicken-Caesar was the best thing about the M&W sketch show IMO.
