"If you just keep doing it long enough in Canada (or UK), they just give you your own TV show"

at least a half-dozen Canadian comedians have politely told him this isn't true by now.

brio, Wednesday, 9 October 2013 18:26 (ten years ago) link

haha that too

Maron to trick-or-treaters: "So, who is your guise?"

polyphonic, Wednesday, 9 October 2013 18:42 (ten years ago) link

"Oh yeah, he was the real deal."

Lover (Eazy), Wednesday, 9 October 2013 18:48 (ten years ago) link

also boring discussions about where in New Jersey Maron's family is from relative to where in New Jersey the guest's family is from, followed by discussions of where in Florida their respective relatives live now

brio, Wednesday, 9 October 2013 19:00 (ten years ago) link

when he talks about "jewing it up" with a guest

whenever i hear the bit that's like what am i ~doing~ in this intro i am transported vividly into some scene of him in the studio doing repeat takes trying to get the neurotic inflection right, i can't bear it

Maron's tics are pretty tolerable compared to garlin's

they're a big bowl of tolerable

festival culture (Jordan), Wednesday, 9 October 2013 23:19 (ten years ago) link

especially doing it 3 hours a week. it's like hanging out with a relative at this point, not nails-on-chalkboard, just a "here we go again" eyeroll when he talks about the time he sauteed the onions perfectly for the lox and onions sandwich yet again

brio, Thursday, 10 October 2013 14:22 (ten years ago) link

I had to stop listening to every episode & only DL ones that I thought I'd really be into. I think in 2013 I've only downloaded 8-10 eps and only listened to 3 lately (Catherine O'Hara, Laura Dern and Michael Keaton, all were complete treats). I also skip the first 11 mins or so because I'm not having it anymore :/

I've Seen rRootage (Will M.), Thursday, 10 October 2013 14:25 (ten years ago) link

that's my method too - he's been on kind of a roll with guests I'm interested in lately though

brio, Thursday, 10 October 2013 14:28 (ten years ago) link

curious if any WTF/MM fans who were previously unfamiliar with Uhh Yeah Dude listened to that ep and had opinions one way or the other

didn't make it all the way through, should I give them a chance?

only if you're not a peed

they are a diff kind of comedy podcast, but they are pretty ilx-y, maybe more ilx-y than MM?

2006 4 Life: The Uhh Yeah Dude thread

I'll check it out - is there a good place to start, or should I just jump in with the latest?

brio, Thursday, 10 October 2013 14:51 (ten years ago) link

jump in w/ the latest and work backwards, maybe skim that thread for recs

ᶓ͠סּᴥ͠סּᶔ ᶓͼ᷆ₓͼ᷇ᶔ (gr8080), Thursday, 10 October 2013 14:52 (ten years ago) link

i'm so far behind on these because i couldn't stand the thought of listening to Maron kiss up to Maynard from Tool for an hour and a half, but i finally listened to that ep and it was actually pretty decent. Maynard comes across as really likable and distances himself from the insuffarable Tool fan contingent nicely.

The Homme one is a mixed bag so far.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 10 October 2013 15:38 (ten years ago) link

I started listening to uyd after hearing them on wtf. Thought they seemed really funny and likeable. Listen all the time now and only dip back in to maron occasionally

sonderborg, Thursday, 10 October 2013 22:06 (ten years ago) link

The Homme one is really scattered. They talk a lot, but not really about anything.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 10 October 2013 22:10 (ten years ago) link

this laura dern one is so good

socki (s1ocki), Thursday, 10 October 2013 22:32 (ten years ago) link

sonderborg i am sincerely happy for you.

No more kisses (sunny successor), Friday, 11 October 2013 14:28 (ten years ago) link

I don't know if I just picked the wrong time to dip into UYD or what, but the two episodes I listened to earlier this year were insufferable.

your ears are broken

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 11 October 2013 15:21 (ten years ago) link

i'm a fan for life but will be the first to admit they can be absolutely insufferable at times

ᶓ͠סּᴥ͠סּᶔ ᶓͼ᷆ₓͼ᷇ᶔ (gr8080), Friday, 11 October 2013 15:22 (ten years ago) link

they were a lot more so back when Jah used to read his hippy-dippy outros

I got the glares, the mutterings, the snarls (President Keyes), Friday, 11 October 2013 15:24 (ten years ago) link

I don't know, I dip into the UYD thread from time to time and I just was not hearing any of the stuff that you guys talk about in that thread. The thread makes it sound like a really fun listen, but I just wasn't hearing it. Granted, I think a part of it is that its clearly a podcast that rewards long-time listeners, there seemed to be lots of in-jokes and references that were flying past me. Problem was those two episodes I listened to didn't have anything that made me want to hear more.

JACK SQUAT about these Charlie Nobodies (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 11 October 2013 15:25 (ten years ago) link

don't know which two you heard but I doubt they were as barren as all that

I got the glares, the mutterings, the snarls (President Keyes), Friday, 11 October 2013 15:28 (ten years ago) link

the joy in UYD is definitely in familiarity w/ seth + jah and their unique chemistry, not in subject matter or material

ᶓ͠סּᴥ͠סּᶔ ᶓͼ᷆ₓͼ᷇ᶔ (gr8080), Friday, 11 October 2013 15:30 (ten years ago) link

I guess the in-joke is that it's clear a classroom full of Korean kids has researched UYD by finding Seth's car on Google Earth

I got the glares, the mutterings, the snarls (President Keyes), Friday, 11 October 2013 15:33 (ten years ago) link

I agree with j/v/c, I've tried UYD a few times and while it's occasionally entertaining I don't really get it overall. But yeah it seems like if you listened every week and got to know the dudes it would have more appeal. It's probably like the Best Show is for me.

Immediate Follower (NA), Friday, 11 October 2013 15:34 (ten years ago) link

tbh I have played episodes with mr veg in the car with me and found myself hearing them with an "outsider's" ears - they do sound kind of inane. i can see how it may not grab you

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 11 October 2013 16:38 (ten years ago) link

j/v/c and na there is a site called thisyear.org where they have best of radio shows, podcasts etc. maybe take a listen to uyd 2006 best of and see what you think. it really is a enter at the ground floor situation i think

No more kisses (sunny successor), Friday, 11 October 2013 19:23 (ten years ago) link

plus there are so many in jokes and lazy shows at this point (2013)

No more kisses (sunny successor), Friday, 11 October 2013 19:24 (ten years ago) link

yeah, i was actually talking to a friend that is a big UYD guy and he said 2013 era is probably the worst place to start. when i get some free time i'll try to give one of those best ofs a shot.

JACK SQUAT about these Charlie Nobodies (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 11 October 2013 19:33 (ten years ago) link

Just watched Thinky Pain on Netflix and it was great. The sharpest set of his I've heard in a long long time, yet it was still really relaxed and loose.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 11 October 2013 23:32 (ten years ago) link

watching that now--his hatred of atheists is disgusting

Of, that Nick Cave interview--imagining Maron working overtime on his TV show, not doing homework, and not wanting to turn down the chance to interview him.

Lover (Eazy), Sunday, 13 October 2013 23:46 (ten years ago) link

Oof, that is. Though glad iI stuck with it.

Lover (Eazy), Sunday, 13 October 2013 23:47 (ten years ago) link

The Homme one is really scattered. They talk a lot, but not really about anything.

It gets pretty good towards the end. This is the first interview with him I've heard where he discusses what put him in the hospital, what happened afterwards and how its reflected in the album. And a lot about being young in the California desert and that whole scene. Thought it was one of the better ones I've listened to, actually.

ΙΧΘΥΣ blindness (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Monday, 14 October 2013 02:22 (ten years ago) link

when Maron starts to perv a little on Nick Cave's wife and Cave says "steady on, mate" it's a pretty great moment
