I'm planning on being in Yosemite that weekend but I could probably meet up somewhere in SF the night of the 22nd or 23rd
― Hip Hop Hamlet (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 11 October 2013 20:20 (ten years ago) link
Michael, you said you'd be back on the 23rd. Would that be back and coherent enough to say hello?
― EZ Snappin, Friday, 11 October 2013 20:22 (ten years ago) link
Coherent, I cannot guarantee, but I'll be back at work.

so

we're planning a meetup (do people still say "FAP"?) at 15 romolo on oct. 16 around 9pm. if it's too crowded, we can figure out something else, but it should be doable on a wednesday night. my stipulation was "good cocktail menu and cheap/interesting/veg-accommodating bar snacks."
hope to see you tonight!

re: Yosemite
my company has an annual retreat in Wawona, which is private land but within the park boundaries (I've been assured we should be able to get past the ranger gate)

Where, Shakey? I lived in Wawona for seven years.

here. One of the company principals owns a cabin.

yeah it's pretty cool. I can't really imagine what living there would be like tbh - beautiful, but pretty isolated I would think...?
― Ayn Rand Akbar (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 16 October 2013 19:11 (ten years ago) link
Moved in '80; evangelicals and hippies, hour-long commute to school for four of those years, population varied from several hundred in the summer to maybe a hundred in the winter. My back yard was as awesome as anyone's, though. We lived in the penultimate house on a north/south street (Spelt Road) about a half mile from the Redwoods' business office. More bear interaction than most people that didn't grow up going to the Eagle.

Wawona, more than anything, made me love big cities. First time I could I went to London.

ILX's own Dominique Leone is playing at the Knockout on the 23rd starting around 10, opening for Fred Frith. Should we FAP somewhere nearby? I want to be able to do both.
― clueless mom complaining about miley Cyrus (sarahell), Saturday, 19 October 2013 21:51 (ten years ago) link
hmm I think everyone's got competing agendas - would be best if I could meet somewhere after ye olde dining hour (ie around 8pm or so) as I have to get my mom dinner and drop her off at BART that evening after she's done babysitting my daughter. Which would work out for a pre-Knockout meetup (seeing as how that's also in my neighborhood) but EZ said earlier would be better and I don't know about Michael White... may have to scrap the plan
― Ayn Rand Akbar (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 22 October 2013 21:45 (ten years ago) link
I might be able to do later but that's definitely not my preference.

afraid I have to bow out, mom making things difficult - sorry to miss ya EZ

EZ, I can meet you in the Lower Haight if you want - earlyish - since I have a boatload of laundry to get started. Let me know.

We'll that was a bummer. Michael and I were in the same bar for nearly two hours and didn't manage to meet. Sorry, sir. Sincerely sorry.

hey thank you!there for a few days next week, so no ron lynchdeli rec is totally what i was after though, i will try to eat the hell out of some eggs there one afternoonalso neighbourhood recommendations also appreciated, from what i understand it is somewhat passé to go to sf & circulate wide-eyed along haight ashbury, let me know if anybody has strong feelings about where i should end up strolling
― mustread guy (schlump), Friday, 21 February 2014 18:21 (ten years ago) link
Stroll through the Mission for good eats, coffee, Dolores Park, hipsters, google buses and burritos. Stroll through the upper Haight for Golden Gate Park and Amoeba. Stroll through the Embarcadero for shops/food, boats and tourists. Stroll through Ocean Beach for ocean/beach, and also Land's End hiking. Stroll through North Beach for Italian restaurants, strip clubs and close proximity to Chinatown. Stroll through Union Square for big department stores and tourists.

so is SOMA worse than 3 years ago? If I get out there this summer I'd just go there for the reopened Eagle.
― images of war violence and historical smoking (Dr Morbius), Friday, 21 February 2014 20:08 (ten years ago) link
I only ever go to SoMA to look for graffiti, or walking through on my way downtown. There are art galleries and restaurants popping up there now to suit the tech community (and Slim's the music venue is there), but I still wouldn't consider it a great SF end-destination spot.
― Dominique, Friday, 21 February 2014 20:24 (ten years ago) link
worse in what way
xp

like Dominique I wouldn't really consider it a neighborhood to stroll through. while it is flat, it's also (usually) deserted apart from homeless/randoms during the day and by obnoxious bridge-and-tunnel idiot clubbers on weekend nights. and it's not like there's a preponderance of cool shops/stores/restaurants (although there is a smattering of leather shops/bars if yr into that kind of thing - the Eagle is cool)

Just went to the Pizza Shop on 24th (it's new!) and it was YUM. Inexpensive NY-style pizza slices. $3 for cheese, $4 for others.

No, it's at 24th and Folsom. I'm doing a one on one day with Owen, but next time for sure. I let K know in case she and Ben want to meet you guys.
― schwantz, Saturday, 22 February 2014 20:10 (ten years ago) link
there are some great restaurants and bars in SOMA - i work over there, so i end up hanging out in that neighborhood more than i otherwise probably would have. it's not just hip spots for techies.
― eh mec, elle est ou ma caisse? (ytth), Monday, 24 February 2014 04:21 (ten years ago) link
Meanwhile in the 'tech or housing or not or both or' continuing saga, this detail:
Another man who didn't want to give his name, but said he was from the dot-com boom and called himself "part of the new upper class of Silicon Valley," encouraged tech employees to "acknowledge our privilege" and "listen to people's stories of eviction instead of looking at our phones." He then read from a poem that said "The Internet is killing us."
