(haha I clicked through on their Park Plaza link and it's a classic bait-and-switch; "Oh, did we say $131? We really meant $229.")

Thank you, Bostonians! Would staying at a freaky student club in Cambridge be weird?

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 14:46 (twenty years ago) link

perhaps, they might drag you down to the goth club or run tests on you

kephm, Tuesday, 28 September 2004 14:48 (twenty years ago) link

Depends on the club, really (is it a Harvard or MIT thing, or a Boston school with some Cambridge real estate?)

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 14:49 (twenty years ago) link

I can't check my Lonely Planet because I left it at home, but they were like some converted women's club and one other club-type thing, neither specifically Harvard/MIT related I don't think.

But, I just called Buckminster Filler and they have a room for me for $89, thankfully. What is fun to do around the BF, besides catching a cab to the Ritz?

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 14:56 (twenty years ago) link

You are a block away from Landsdowne St, which is one of the main club areas in town and also where Fenway Park is. At the far end of Landsdowne St is a Jillian's with a surprisingly cheap bowling alley on the third floor. If you go down Landsdowne and turn right instead of left when you get to the end and follow that street as it curves around to the left, you'll end up on Boylston just outside of a gay dance club and a restaurant that does salsa dancing. If you go up Brookline Ave you'll hit the Fenway movie theatre (and its attendant mall in case you need to pick up random stuff) and a whole bunch of restaurants, including a reasonably-priced rib place called something like Southwest Coyote. There's also a beer pub at the corner of Landsdowne and Brookline that is usually MOBBED with Sox fans. If you head down Beacon you'll hit The Elephant Walk (moderately pricey French-Cambodian) and Sol Azteca (Mexican). If you go down Commonwealth away from the city you'll hit Boston University; if you go towards town you'll hit Mass Ave and be a block down from Newbury Street and the Virgin Megastore, Newbury Comics, JP Licks, and tons and tons of excellent windowshopping.

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 15:03 (twenty years ago) link

(There are a ton of restaurants on Newbury St and on Boylston St, BTW, plus you can take the green line from Kenmore to Arlington to get to The Ritz.)

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 15:04 (twenty years ago) link

I'm going to be in Boston (well, Cambridge) for a week or so at the end of October. I'm starting to get really excited about it; having been away for two years, and just being on a flying visit, will make me see all the good things and avoid the boredom that set in when I spent three months there. I hope.

toby (tsg20), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 15:05 (twenty years ago) link

Stay at Chateau Perry

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 15:07 (twenty years ago) link

walk over to mass ave and walk across the bridge to cambridge. it's a lovely stroll, esp. at night.

(I would offer but I would have to check with my wife first and right now she is in full-bore stress mode over an upcoming recital and I think avoiding adding to that stress by asking if someone she doesn't know at all can stay with us at some unspecified time in the future might be the move I should be making here. Also we don't live near the area you're interested in.)

(xpost kephm OTM: the Cambridge side of the Charles has much better scenery; it's much nicer to look at the Boston skyline than it is to look at MIT.)

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 15:14 (twenty years ago) link

Thanks again, this is excellent info. The Buckminster seems like it's in a great location.

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 15:28 (twenty years ago) link

ITs in a great location if you can stand a zillion BU students bumping into you.

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 15:50 (twenty years ago) link

The BU/Fenway/Landsdowne convergence can tend towards the annoying but otherwise it is a good location.

Chris, what's the name of that bar we went to after Jillian's? The Cask and Flagon?

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 15:57 (twenty years ago) link

Yup the Cask, thankfully the Sox aren't home this weekend so it should be a somewhat civilized place. Granted the DJ had no clue who Erik B was.

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 16:01 (twenty years ago) link

Landsdowne St is awful. I learned to hate BU students during my year in Boston.

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 16:15 (twenty years ago) link

i think mary has the smarts to stay away from landsdowne.

kephm, Tuesday, 28 September 2004 16:38 (twenty years ago) link

I don't have any Boston-related smarts! My goals are to make it to the Museum of Fine Arts and the Harvard campus. What is the fanciest shmanciest department store? That is probably my best bet for a Moz sighting.

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 19:08 (twenty years ago) link

There's a Nieman-Marcus at Copley Place and a Saks in Prudential Centre (both shopping areas are conveniently connected by a skyway).

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 19:12 (twenty years ago) link

well i hope you know enough to stay away from sports bars. (landsdowne street UGH)

MOFA is easy to get to. just watch it on the orange line, tough neighborhoods just one stop over. are you going to see the DECO show ?

oh and if you pull into Greyhound/trainn Depot and its dark outside , take a cab to the hotel.

xpost

Neiumun Marcus (sp) in Copley Square maybe? you like an extra 20%

kephm (kephm), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 19:17 (twenty years ago) link

you like an extra 20%

WTF, i can type, honest

kephm (kephm), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 19:20 (twenty years ago) link

I'll arrive at Greyhound during the day, but will leave at night, after the concert. Is it really that dangerous? I suppose I could take a cab from the Orpheum?

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 20:06 (twenty years ago) link

If you get out of the concert before 1 AM, I'd just take the T two stops from Park Street to South Station; it will cost you $1.25 and will be better than trying to flag down a cab and then explain that you only want to drive 10 blocks.

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 20:09 (twenty years ago) link

will she need to switch lines? park is green and s. station is red, no?

crime shot up over the summer in the chinatown area. so, if you are not looking to score drugs, and walk confidently you should be good.

kephm (kephm), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 20:12 (twenty years ago) link

Park is green AND red.

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 20:13 (twenty years ago) link

we should become tour guides

kephm (kephm), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 20:15 (twenty years ago) link

Can I walk from the concert to the depot? Would I want to?

The Art Deco exhibit looks interesting, but is it really $21?!

How is the Peabody Museum?

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 20:21 (twenty years ago) link

we should become tour guides

TOTALLY!

Can I walk from the concert to the depot? Would I want to?

You can. You don't want to (you will have to walk through moderately confusing streets at night in a town you are unfamiliar with, plus some of the streets you'd have to walk down could charitably be described as "sketchy").

The Art Deco exhibit looks interesting, but is it really $21?!

Probably. The MFA likes to ream people.

How is the Peabody Museum?

THE PEABODY IS GODLY. It's also sort of hidden; you have to walk through Harvard Yard towards the Science Center, then walk down Kirkland to Divinity Street and turn left down that to get to it. BUT IT'S WORTH IT.

It's also worth checking out the glass flower exhibit at the Museum of Natural History next door and taking a quick spin through Busch-Reisinger, which is on Kirkland.

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 20:38 (twenty years ago) link

you could walk, the green line is much much easier.

$21? sheesh, i get into the museum for free.

you should check out the Isabella Stewart Museum if you get the chance

kephm (kephm), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 20:40 (twenty years ago) link

i'd offer to walk you from the show to the greyhound station but i don't know who i am going to the show with.

kephm (kephm), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 20:41 (twenty years ago) link

I was going to mention the Gardner but wasn't sure if you were looking for a fine arts museum.

I wish I was still ushering at The Orpheum; I'd see this show for free.

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 20:42 (twenty years ago) link

I should prob take the subway, er T, anyway, as my Ctown bus departs at 11.30. Good thing Morrissey likes to get an early night's rest. If he is feeling particularly feisty, there is also a bus at 2.

Kephm, which night are you going to and where are your seats? My seats are somewhere in the orchestra, not really close, but not really far away, either.

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 22:08 (twenty years ago) link

you know, i am not even sure yet. a friend bought the tickets and we've been phone tagging. i will revive when i find out

Boston was cool in HIGH SCHOOL

so were the boredoms

kephm (kephm), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 14:10 (nineteen years ago) link

but you were in 5th grade, so you missed out

kephm (kephm), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 14:11 (nineteen years ago) link

you also missed Vanilla Ice, poor you

The Gardener Musuem is excellent

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 16:52 (nineteen years ago) link

Yes it is very much so.

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 16:53 (nineteen years ago) link

Yes. Make sure you check out the big Sargent under the stairs to the left of the arboretum... El Jaleo, I think it's called. Properly it's 'magesterial' but effectively it's 'cool as shit.'

{Sand in the [vaseline} on the lens] (x Jeremy), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 16:55 (nineteen years ago) link

Also there is an 80s/electro-funk/etc night at Great Scott's in Allston on Thursday. If you can resist the allure of going to see SUPERGRASS.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 17:03 (nineteen years ago) link

gardener suggestion thirded (or is that fourthed?)

i worked right around the corner from there

boston is cool. i just don't like bu students, in general. i lived in an apartment building with far too many of them.

TS: BU students vs BC students

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 17:53 (nineteen years ago) link

i was picked up at a show by a cute BC student, so they have the edge. however i don't really know what they're like in general.

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 17:58 (nineteen years ago) link

A DOOM GLOOMY PLACE.

what i love about BC is that it has the best college radio station in the country but NONE of the students ever listen

kephm, Wednesday, 29 September 2004 18:15 (nineteen years ago) link

the girl who picked me up was a deejay, in fact

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 18:25 (nineteen years ago) link

no way. too cool for school.

kephm, Wednesday, 29 September 2004 18:29 (nineteen years ago) link

BC, definately.

{Sand in the [vaseline} on the lens] (x Jeremy), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 18:39 (nineteen years ago) link

but MIT chix0rs are tops

"what i love about BC is that it has the best college radio station in the country but NONE of the students ever listen"

Better than Emerson radio? Admittedly I haven't heard BC radio.
