anyway, I thought the show's start was promising overall, in spite of being overexplainy and full of cliches. Just engaging enough to make me want to see more.

because it sound intersting xp

the show does get considerably better than the first season.
starts slow, but payoff is pretty great
― Ayn Rand Akbar (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 7 January 2014 18:14 (ten years ago) link
I didn't even think it was slow, there was just stuff that irritated me, like the fact that the simultaneous liquor heist/raid gets explained in dialogue after it's already obvious what happened, or the fact that Nucky delivers a canned line about politicians lying after telling his obviously fake story. Also lots of warmed over scorsese-copying-scorsese type stuff, like the execution of Carlesimo in a fucking pasta restaurant with fucking caruso playing - really that whole end montage, although I did like the touch of having the abusive husband's body turn up in the fish catch.

If you were being charitable you might say that Darmody speaks that way because he's left the whole Princeton thing behind and wants to play at being laissez-faire give-a-shit gangster. But then again maybe not. I quite like him in this tbh

so basically this is gonna end with Rothstein's death eh
― Ayn Rand Akbar (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 10 January 2014 00:34 (ten years ago) link
I'm guessing the show is a lot of work for everyone involved and must be quite expensive (and doesn't command the ratings of something like Game of Thrones). Also Winter has had that 70s set music industry drama with Scorsese and Jagger percolating for a while, although I haven't heard anything about it recently. Shame though
― Number None, Friday, 10 January 2014 00:42 (ten years ago) link
whoa 70s project sounds cool

― Damo Suzuki's Parrot,
Part of me agrees, part of me thinks quit while you're ahead. Five seasons is a good run, though there's certainly enough material here for six or seven at a push.

woah
While talking to Michael K. Williams during a press day for The Purge: Anarchy (which we will have a full interview for closer to that movie’s release), the subject of the final season of Boardwalk Empire inevitably came up, and Williams told me something very, very interesting— Boardwalk Empire Season 5 is going to have a seven-year time jump to 1931.“The storyline has jumped seven years [into the future], which is why I have the beard now,” Williams said when asked about what we can expect from Season 5. “The Depression has set in. The days of the shiny shoes and fancy suits are long gone.”

'31 = Capone goes on trial, Rothstein is dead, Luciano goes to war with Masseria
― Οὖτις, Tuesday, 17 June 2014 22:19 (ten years ago) link
kinda bummed about the Rothstein angle was looking forward to odd couple hijinks with Kelly Macdonald
― Οὖτις, Tuesday, 17 June 2014 22:20 (ten years ago) link
yeah, that's a major bummer
― Number None, Tuesday, 17 June 2014 22:22 (ten years ago) link
Not opposed to that in principle, but there seems to be rather too much unfinished business in 24 to do it right now.

The loss of Capone and Rothstein could be catastrophic. Meyer Lansky is going to rise though.
― xelab, Tuesday, 17 June 2014 22:27 (ten years ago) link
Yeah, I really liked the last couple of seasons, but I'm not too excited for this jump. Kinda surprised HBO would pass up on the chance to film the super bloody Valentine's Day Massacre, though they'll probably shoehorn it into some montage to get us up to speed.
Really was hoping for more of a slow-burn through the Chicago stuff.

yes

Also shit's only just really kicking off with Narcisse.

Yeah, are they going to write off that whole plot?

that whole thing seemed done with him being nailed by the FBI. where else is there to go with that?
― Οὖτις, Tuesday, 17 June 2014 22:40 (ten years ago) link
it's been a minute since i saw the season finale, but i thought i remembered some subtle hints that it wasn't completely over with him.
― djenter the dragon? (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 17 June 2014 22:44 (ten years ago) link
I can't remember it exactly either but I do recall that Hoover screwed him (and called him out as a hypocrite)
― Οὖτις, Tuesday, 17 June 2014 22:50 (ten years ago) link
hoover kowtowed him into calling him sir and it was established that he was stooge from this point onwards.
― xelab, Tuesday, 17 June 2014 22:54 (ten years ago) link
a stooge
idk I'm kind of okay with them setting fire to the current storylines and starting over for the final season.
narcisse was cool and all but I don't neeed any more of him imo
― set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 17 June 2014 23:41 (ten years ago) link
I'm fine w him being gone as long as there's more Mueller and more Chalky
― Οὖτις, Tuesday, 17 June 2014 23:43 (ten years ago) link
A season set in 31 sounds very interesting, but this does sorta underscore how little has happened over four seasons.
― Frederik B, Tuesday, 17 June 2014 23:45 (ten years ago) link
but loads of stuff happened
― Number None, Wednesday, 18 June 2014 00:20 (ten years ago) link
I'd be cool with one more mid-20s season, then a final 30s season.
― the joke should be over once the kid is eaten. (chap), Wednesday, 18 June 2014 00:49 (ten years ago) link
3 & 4 were great though so I guess I should have some faith.

Up until the announcement about the final season, part of me was hoping it would limp along for another ten years or so and just slide through the 20s and into the 30s. But that is also just the sick part of me that would really love to see a show set in the recent past just keep going and going to trace the characters and their descendents through the decades.
― djenter the dragon? (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 18 June 2014 01:05 (ten years ago) link
Yeah, loads of stuff happened, but so much of it was pointless stuff like Nucky's nephew going to college or Gyp Rosetti or Rothstein and Margaret or Nucky not going to Florida or Paz de la Huerta. I do like this show, but it has really taken it's time with some looong detours, which now doesn't really amount to a lot. The evolution of Nucky has been pretty standard.

So, any thoughts on the new season? It struck me that I'm pretty happy it's only eight episodes, I don't need to see any more of this. It's not bad or anything, I just don't think the first four seasons has added up to a lot, and the time-jump pretty much difuses the little buildup that has been.
― Frederik B, Monday, 8 September 2014 20:42 (nine years ago) link
no more Rothstein though :(
