I'm guessing the show is a lot of work for everyone involved and must be quite expensive (and doesn't command the ratings of something like Game of Thrones). Also Winter has had that 70s set music industry drama with Scorsese and Jagger percolating for a while, although I haven't heard anything about it recently. Shame though

Part of me agrees, part of me thinks quit while you're ahead. Five seasons is a good run, though there's certainly enough material here for six or seven at a push.

While talking to Michael K. Williams during a press day for The Purge: Anarchy (which we will have a full interview for closer to that movie’s release), the subject of the final season of Boardwalk Empire inevitably came up, and Williams told me something very, very interesting— Boardwalk Empire Season 5 is going to have a seven-year time jump to 1931.

“The storyline has jumped seven years [into the future], which is why I have the beard now,” Williams said when asked about what we can expect from Season 5. “The Depression has set in. The days of the shiny shoes and fancy suits are long gone.”

Not opposed to that in principle, but there seems to be rather too much unfinished business in 24 to do it right now.

The loss of Capone and Rothstein could be catastrophic. Meyer Lansky is going to rise though.

Yeah, I really liked the last couple of seasons, but I'm not too excited for this jump. Kinda surprised HBO would pass up on the chance to film the super bloody Valentine's Day Massacre, though they'll probably shoehorn it into some montage to get us up to speed.

Really was hoping for more of a slow-burn through the Chicago stuff.

it's been a minute since i saw the season finale, but i thought i remembered some subtle hints that it wasn't completely over with him.

I can't remember it exactly either but I do recall that Hoover screwed him (and called him out as a hypocrite)

hoover kowtowed him into calling him sir and it was established that he was stooge from this point onwards.

A season set in 31 sounds very interesting, but this does sorta underscore how little has happened over four seasons.

I'd be cool with one more mid-20s season, then a final 30s season.

3 & 4 were great though so I guess I should have some faith.

Up until the announcement about the final season, part of me was hoping it would limp along for another ten years or so and just slide through the 20s and into the 30s. But that is also just the sick part of me that would really love to see a show set in the recent past just keep going and going to trace the characters and their descendents through the decades.

Yeah, loads of stuff happened, but so much of it was pointless stuff like Nucky's nephew going to college or Gyp Rosetti or Rothstein and Margaret or Nucky not going to Florida or Paz de la Huerta. I do like this show, but it has really taken it's time with some looong detours, which now doesn't really amount to a lot. The evolution of Nucky has been pretty standard.

So, any thoughts on the new season? It struck me that I'm pretty happy it's only eight episodes, I don't need to see any more of this. It's not bad or anything, I just don't think the first four seasons has added up to a lot, and the time-jump pretty much difuses the little buildup that has been.

no more Rothstein though :(

Glad that Chalky bust out of prison and decent as the flashbacks are, when there is only 7 ep's left they need to stop fucking about with flashbacks.

Pretty meh opener. Flashbacks not welcome. Maybe should have ended last season. No more one eyed dude :(
