thanks, forks and everyone, for the sympathies.
i never got to know him as well as some other people did--i was completely stunned when i heard the news in part because i didn't know anything about his mental health struggles. all i ever saw was this tornado of a man with a roar of a laugh, the kind of guy who would jump in front of me at a riot line to protect me from truncheons and then later laugh about what the bruises did to his tattoos.
his daughter is a little younger than me, and i only met her once at a march ("these are my friends, Maddy" " *skeptical sideye* "), but i felt like i knew her because he talked about why and how much he loved her all the time. it's hard to see that last pained post of his be met with an immediate outpouring of love, and to know that he seems to have taken his own life anyway.
there's a candlelight vigil for him in florida tonight, we're mourning him in DC, people are raising glasses to him in LA, and somebody in Ohio just screenprinted this

anyway. there are other things this thread is for.

wellllllllllllllll
in short its the very folks i was complaining about upthread for frustrating but ultimately silly things (justine tunney of the "nonviolent milita" & OWS twitter coup, and her friend micah white "consultant to activists and the inventor of the Occupy Wall Street meme") **apparently going and doing something interesting**.
its slickly put together and in my book is relatively on point in its politics, but knowing the people behind it (and the fact that after their noisy little internet coup they're suddenly very quiet on the site about who they are) i'm a little leery.

and i have to admit there's something in me that finds the idea of, basically, an anarchist americorp appealing. what they're talking about isn't so different from the politics and practice that drove the Common Ground Relief Collective after Katrina in New Orleans, or obviously the Panthers' Service to the People Programs, and i've always admired, learned from, and sought to model the people behind those things.

I will be working, of course.
Monday, September 22nd9amGather @ Battery Park
On Monday, September 22nd at 9:00 am, thousands of people will gather at Battery Park in Lower Manhattan to confront the root cause of the climate crisis - an economic system based on exploiting frontline communities, workers and natural resources. On the heels of the largest-ever march on climate change, we have an opportunity to transform the economic system driving this crisis.
Wearing blue to represent the sea that surrounds us, we rise to the steps of the NY Stock Exchange at 12:00 pm, flooding the area with our bodies in a massive sit-in - a collective act of nonviolent civil disobedience - to confront the system that both causes and profits from the crisis that is threatening humanity.
There is no time to waste - Wall Street must be transformed. Through the power of people taking collective action we will build an economy based on justice and sustainability and stop the climate crisis.
Full call to action and information here: http://floodwallstreet.net
9 AM - Gather @ Battery Park - Breakfast and Music from Rude Mechanical Orchestra9:30 AM - Speakers - including frontline community leaders of the Climate Justice Alliance, Naomi Klein, Rebecca Solnit and Chris Hedges11 AM -- Nonviolent Direct Action Training & March12 PM -- Flood Wall St. and mass Sit-in

@ChristRobbins · 12mTalk is that #FloodWallStreet will hang out until the closing bell, or until _____. Atmosphere in the barricades is fluid & festive
If this goes til 4pm, I see several cable bookings for Adolf Giuliani about de Blasio "losing control of the city."

In addition to whatever rhetorical/political groundwork laying OWS may have done, there's actually a significant portion of OWS alums on staff & managing volunteers for his campaign too.

Riding by the park in DC where all the camps were yesterday - I've done it a hundred times, if not more - and the cabbie asked "when was it they had all those people camping out here?" and realized yup, five years ago, not that long after my daughter was born. Freddie deBoer:
I’m regularly accused of believing things that I’ve never said and don’t believe. That’s largely a facet of the fact that, on the internet today, arguing with people is really a matter of misrepresenting what they’re saying and then attacking the misrepresentation. One of the most constant of these is that I say “both parties are the same.” I’ve never said that. Ever. In my life. But over time, the claims of friends who do say that have been vindicated over and over again.
By that I mean something very simple: my communist friends who really do say that the two parties are the same make predictions about politics. My Democrat friends do the same. Looking back at the times when the two groups have clashed, the commies have been right literally 100% of the time....
If you’re a young person looking to actually make change in the world, I’m not quite sure what to tell you. I think you need to build something entirely new. Because Lucy will never let you kick that football. I am not ready to write off partisan politics entirely. I still don’t say both parties are the same. I think that a socialist movement should use a concert of tactics — in the labor movement, in street-level protests, in grassroots organizing, and in partisan politics — to try and effect change. But I know by now to expect less than nothing from the Democrats, and they never, ever let me down. Young radicals, you should utilize the Democratic party if you find it useful in the short term, but you have to understand: the Democrats hate you, and they will always hate you. There is no tangible evidence whatsoever to suggest that’s going to change.
