yeah so weir looked great, amazingly so cuz the mad men ppl managed to make her look older than jon hamm last summer. prince episode was superfun also. whatever hiccups this show had in the fall it's back in peak shape right now.

They never really seemed to know what to do with Nick and Jess as a couple.

yeah it never struck to me as a narrative that was tenable in the long run. the more serious the relationships get on the show, the more UNFUNNY INTENSE YELLING there is.

And the ways in which Nick is an idiot are becoming less funny and more irritating.

i mean i think the relationship arc only felt untenable because the writers forced it. too many arcs ABOUT the relationship instead of just treating it in the background

why could it not have been on purpose?

I blame fandom, also relationships never seem to work out funny on comedies

otm. used to be kind of a hapless stuck-in-his-ways schlub, now he's like two seconds from just soiling himself while screaming "MacGyver!" for no reason.

in general this season's felt relatively sloppy compared to s2 - a lot of scenes that are like improv-in-place-of-jokes instead of improv-based-on-jokes. like when jess got a hotel room and they just kind of had her yell in it.

the one where jess moves into nick's room - which led to wacky revelations that jess reads in bed and that nick has a funny nightshirt (i guess previous nights she'd retire to her room after fucking?). that's cool people you know loved it.

also does cece live in their building? she appeared to be walking in and out of the building a lot for no clear reason while sweating her texts to the young guy

tbh at some point they did try to show another side of him - he actally did take the bar exam and passed iirc -, but they then quickly came back to the "MacGyver" screaming as you say.

yeah i hated when they were finally going to let him show off his lawyer skills when schmidt got sued and he was just an incoherent mess - his save at the end was so weak I thought they might actually just have the actual lawyers be like "well, no. why would we accept that?"

enough decent stuff this season (schmidt/winston still killing it, dug cardellini) that I'm still watching, though. the drop in quality isn't Suburgatory bad yet.

ugh, poor suburgatory. so downhill this season

between the weak shit they're giving him to do on the show and all the movies he's doing, wondering if jake johnston might be David Caruso-ing out the door before long

I was hoping Nick would whip out some crazy lawyer skills, get "Where the fuck did that come from?!" reactions from Schmidt and Winston, leave the opposing lawyers in the dust, and remain an utterly hopeless schlub in every other aspect of his life. Instead of "I'm not the guy who puts a toy together!" he could've been "I'm not the guy who's a lawyer!" Or something.

But srsly did I miss some expo on why cece would just be walking in and out of their apt, elevator and building all day?

they're friends? her life is a mess right now?

She didn't interact with Jess once though! Just with the ex who doubletimed her and his roommate who she hooked up with. Just curious if there was a line about crashing there after drinking and waiting for a drug shipment to arrive that would require multiple trips in and out or something.

well they have been working on storylines about her growing closer to the roommates, right?

Hey I'm more than capable of doing their work for them too, I'm just curious if they did it and I missed it. And this is coming from a place of amused curiosity, no need for "it's just a comedy, who cares" responses

i've just been assuming that deleted scenes will show her and daddario lezzing it up and that's why she's there. just closing my eyes and assuming.

I'm mainly watching this show for Winston right now. They've messed with Schmidt too much (although he can be brought back).

I assumed Cece spent the night there after playing True American and was too hungover to leave? When I am hungover I don't have a ton of agency.
