Racial profiling as in restricting the number of people of color in a club. Really wished I'd gotten this story on the cover of City Pages as I tried to do at the time--not many bouncers willing to go on the record "in real time."

in fairness lots of times even clubs that sounds like they are exclusively catering to african americans (or events, etc) have "no jerseys, no sneakers, no hats")....like ones that advertise on KMOJ, usually billed as "for the grown and sexy", seems like they are trying to cater to an older audience w/less chance for trouble

Taco Cat Opens In Minneapolis
We are Taco Cat, a bike-only taco delivery service in Minneapolis, MN. Call 612-270-8007 to place an order. We take cash, credit, or barter.
Q: I’m drunk and what is this? A: Taco Cat is a late-night, bike-only, taco delivery service in Minneapolis, MN.
Q: Why is Taco Cat delivery only? A: It’s easier and cheaper for us to operate this way.
Q: Can I pick up my order instead? A: No.
Q: Do you only deliver on bike? A: Yes. We should make up some bullshit about sustainability or something, but we just like to bike.
Q: How did Taco Cat start? A: No one delivered tacos. We stepped up.
Q: Where can I get a Taco Cat shirt/merch? A: You can add one to your order or pick one up at The Alt bike shop.
Q: Is it Tacocat or Taco Cat? A: We don’t really know. It’s both.
Q: Did you know that Taco Cat is a palindrome? A: Yes.
Q: Are your tacos made from cats? A: No and you aren’t funny.
Q: Are you hiring? A: Probably not.
Q: Are you a legally licensed business? A: Who the fuck are you? You want tacos or what?

“We want to send a clear message: There will be zero tolerance for disruptive behavior or property damage,” the statement read.
― j., Friday, 11 April 2014 15:27 (ten years ago) link
I drove past dinky town last night and there were more SWATted out cops than I've ever seen in my life. It looked like something out of a batman movie, or like someone tried to rob the federal reserve. Probably 200 fully armored cops in a 2 block area. Cop cars completely lining and blocking the streets; there was hardly enough room for all the cops to stand around holding their dicks. I saw twice as many cops as students; in fact, it didn't really look like there were any more kids out than a typical weeknight. There's no way those dozen arrests weren't all completely trumped up to save face. Must have been at least a couple hundred thousand dollars wiorth of overtime/"hazard" pay wasted last night.
― Dan I., Friday, 11 April 2014 16:28 (ten years ago) link
On the other hand, I guess, I was in Dinkytown during the 2003 hockey riot, too, which were pretty huge and scary and destructive, and didn't have enough police presence (or any at all, that I remember). But even that riot could have been broken up by like 1/2 the cops that were out last night.

some of these, you're like, woah hey mr policeman, and then others you're like, there's some dudes gonna get maced
i wonder if the people who go out for this are like, deliberate about it, or if they just feel this urge to jubilate
when i see that many people standing somewhere i walk the other way
― j., Friday, 11 April 2014 22:25 (ten years ago) link
Woah, oops, I didn't see jackasses jumping off cop cars or that there were so many ppl there. Still, there were just about an equal number of cops as kids
