"I don't even own a TV"

thing about watching TV 'live' is that I haven't feasibly been able to do it since I was in high school. even in my 20s I was taping eps with my shitty VCR because I was always busy when my shows are on.

also, I have trouble watching one ep at a time for serialized shows, particularly high stakes ones like Breaking Bad. I'm always too starved for more after, and feel too pressured to enjoy myself cos I know I get no more for a week. I did watch live for Season 5 and while I liked it, I kind of missed being able to choose how much I digested at once.

the only things I really care about watching live = sporting events and awards shows.

i didn't want to be one of those ppl saying "i don't even own a tv."

it's enough to own it. give it a good home. hug your television.

I have a television, but no cable or antenna, so I can't watch shows. I just use it for DVDs and Xbox. Are people saying that what's on television is good? Because in the instances where I am able to actually flip channels...that's all I end up doing (and usually opt for infomercials that feature music clips).

Dominique, Tuesday, 1 April 2014 17:36 (ten years ago) link

pro-tv people seem weirdly unable to let "i don't watch tv" slide past accepted and unremarked

it's like me telling people that they must follow tennis year-round because it's so amazing and if they display no interest they're just being a snob, or something. leave people be to their interests and their lack of interests!

lex pretend, Tuesday, 1 April 2014 17:37 (ten years ago) link

you scold ppl all the time about what kind of music they like!

I refuse to watch auto-troll, i demand live trolling

fauxpas cola (darraghmac), Tuesday, 1 April 2014 17:41 (ten years ago) link

Digital antennas are pretty cheap. At least you get a few channels that way.

Lex of one minute ago, meet Lex of nine hours ago: i am baffled by and unashamedly contemptuous of this lifestyle.

Auto-Troll 2 is hilarious, it's streaming on Netflix right now, the actors are a bunch of amateurs!

anyway i think this thread has definitively proved that it's indeed the 'no tv' ppl who are the weirdos

i'm unbothered by people being into their favourite tv programmes! i am disdainful of people passively watching stuff they're not into

lex pretend, Tuesday, 1 April 2014 17:48 (ten years ago) link

it is possible that those people may not be entirely honest about their enjoyment of these activities on social media, just fyi

Corpsepaint Counterpaint (jjjusten), Tuesday, 1 April 2014 17:49 (ten years ago) link

I'm bothered by people being into "Scandal" and watching it passively.

Evan, Tuesday, 1 April 2014 17:50 (ten years ago) link

like yknow many a time i have been like "oh hey facebooks why did i eat that whole cheesecake blarrgh i am so gross" but you better believe i loved the shit out of eating that whole cheesecake

I REGRET NOTHING

Corpsepaint Counterpaint (jjjusten), Tuesday, 1 April 2014 17:51 (ten years ago) link

maybe they're not being honest when they're disparaging people for having the temerity to reply they dont have a tv or a car either

i don't eat cheesecakes

i wonder what people offended by "i don't even have a tv" think people who don't have or watch tv should say when others start talking about tv. just remain silent??

lex pretend, Tuesday, 1 April 2014 17:55 (ten years ago) link

they should talk about cheesecakes

waterbabies (waterface), Tuesday, 1 April 2014 17:55 (ten years ago) link

beats me, what if you were standing there talking about tennis with a couple other people? I'd probably go get a coffee or something.

have a nice blood/orange bitters cocktail (mh), Tuesday, 1 April 2014 17:56 (ten years ago) link

i would prefer they just leave the room or better just go buy a tv right away and catch up

Corpsepaint Counterpaint (jjjusten), Tuesday, 1 April 2014 17:56 (ten years ago) link

let me blow your mind, here:

I have read music reviews, some written by lex, and enjoyed them quite a bit. However, I never actually listened to the album. Did you know you can read about something, or converse about it, or enjoy the conversation without having any knowledge of the original material?

They should tantrum until whenever

I want them to get on their knees and apologise

well yes, i assumed that was implied just in the phrasing of the question

if the topic of convo is any other thing you don't know much about, what's the answer?

goole, Tuesday, 1 April 2014 18:00 (ten years ago) link

not to be a dick, which it kind of sounded like i guess

goole, Tuesday, 1 April 2014 18:01 (ten years ago) link

I definitely don't watch a lot of the crap co-workers or friends of friends at bars start talking about so I usually just say "oh I haven't seen it" rather than "I don't even own cable" because then it'd seem like I was trying to shift focus. Cause they're not going to go on and on about it to me anyway. Lucky for me I do watch shows in general so if they gave a shit about what I'm up to instead I could talk about those particular shows.

If people really like shows I ask what they like about them or if there are any cool scenes or characters they could describe

Can't help thinking the Gordian knot of this dilemma could be cut with the rule one of all social interactions: Don't be a dick about it.

always be a dick

have a nice blood/orange bitters cocktail (mh), Tuesday, 1 April 2014 18:07 (ten years ago) link

Yeah the only reason you'd say "i don't even own a tv" is if you're trying to make sure no other shows come up in conversation either.

xp Next-level move would be to pretend you've literally never heard of television and ask them to explain how it works, like you're Daryl Hannah in Splash.

the crux of the thread seems to be people thinking "i don't have a tv" = being a dick rather than stating a fact

lex pretend, Tuesday, 1 April 2014 18:13 (ten years ago) link

for u britishers

goole, Tuesday, 1 April 2014 18:13 (ten years ago) link

the crux of the thread is that people who are dickish about about not owning a tv was excluded from conversation at the outset

goole, Tuesday, 1 April 2014 18:14 (ten years ago) link

xp That's the strict Branwellian interpretation. Everyone else is saying there are dickish and non-dickish ways of saying you don't have a TV.

What is wrong with songs? Absolutely nothing. Songs are great. (DL), Tuesday, 1 April 2014 18:15 (ten years ago) link

garbled grammar there

and, well, not really, since that's most of what the thread is about as far as i can tell

goole, Tuesday, 1 April 2014 18:15 (ten years ago) link

haha this makes me want to turn on E channel full blast

If we've learned anything from this thread, it's that tv ownership is in no way necessary in order to keep up with popular shows, so when your annoying co-worker asks you about Two and a Half Men, "I don't even own a TV" is a weak response at best.
