So my boyfriend from college asked if I'd seen this the other day (which I haven't) because he said that one of the women from this crossed with Hannah off girls reminds him of the me of the past and made a point of saying that wasn't meant to be insulting but rather endearing. Now I feel like I have to watch this.

Those last two episodes more than made up for the wedding episode. Love how Abbi is always the one who, when pushed, goes totally insane.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 2 April 2014 01:17 (ten years ago) link

that wedding episode was hilarious--the bus scene was fantastic

the subway pole gag made me laugh so hard

This...THIS was some Jerry-Lewis-elevator-gag-level shit. Brilliant.

my girlfriend HATES this (one simple) show and it bums me out pretty hard

I have been introduced to this show. Some episode where they were trying to hook up with dudes at the bar and a phone was lost. Hannibal Buress delivering the line "I wouldn't submit a dog to the hectic life of a dentist!" about slayed me.

lol @ the 'push it' knock-off, perfect.

Longish profile of them in the New Yorker last week was kinda interesting.

i was bored and bought the first episode. it was a struggle not to turn it off and delete it from my life w/in 20 seconds. i got up, had a glass of water, and eventually made it through the whole episode and it wasn't as horrifying as I might have imagined. I guess I am just not remotely interested in comedies about this demographic, unless they are really, really good, which this is decidedly not.

20something jewish people in NY should just volunteer to help make TV shows by and/or about other people.

what a shame we won't be blessed with similar analyses of the other episodes

first episode is good; #2 and #3 are so, so funny (abbi's physical comedy in the dentist's office and rachel dratch's cameo are big highlights) and from those episodes onward this became basically my favourite show.

i've been aggressively recommending it to friends and they've all loved it too.

maybe i should give later episodes a try

or i could just watch red dawn on cable

I dunno. (amateurist), Thursday, 26 June 2014 00:28 (nine years ago) link

Yeah this show's great. It took me a few eps to get into but they are both pretty funny and rad.

©Oz Quiz© (Adam Bruneau), Thursday, 26 June 2014 00:32 (nine years ago) link

I think the fact that they are great is key. Even when an ep is sort of eh the pair of them are always great. Plus Hannibal.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 26 June 2014 00:34 (nine years ago) link

or i could just watch red dawn on cable

I hope to god you're talking about the Swayze one, otherwise...

oh yeah, I'm a Swayze purist.

maybe I'll give Broad City another chance. some of the clips were funny. i am pretty tired of shows abt young, temporarily poor ladies working in the culture industries in NYC, but who knows.

I dunno. (amateurist), Thursday, 26 June 2014 14:31 (nine years ago) link

Then don't watch them you big silly

da croupier, Thursday, 26 June 2014 14:33 (nine years ago) link

They dont work in the culture industry btw

Οὖτις, Thursday, 26 June 2014 14:36 (nine years ago) link

they illustrate and stuff, right?

I dunno. (amateurist), Friday, 27 June 2014 16:52 (nine years ago) link

they seem like culture-industry aspirants

Ilana's parents bail her out from time to time, iirc, which is played up for laughs.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Friday, 27 June 2014 18:23 (nine years ago) link

they are temporarily poor, and at least one aspires to be a graphic artist

I dunno. (amateurist), Friday, 27 June 2014 22:57 (nine years ago) link

This show isn't about what they do for a living. I mean... I don't think of Laurel and Hardy as a story about piano movers.

polyphonic, Friday, 27 June 2014 23:05 (nine years ago) link

Abbi's artistic aspirations are pretty quickly exposed as delusional. her art is m/l objectively awful iirc. it's just another joke they're playing with.

Clay, Friday, 27 June 2014 23:21 (nine years ago) link

actually abbi has been selling her art since before the show was airing, no knowing wink going on there

da croupier, Friday, 27 June 2014 23:28 (nine years ago) link

well all art is objectively awful imo so maybe i am not the best judge

Clay, Friday, 27 June 2014 23:29 (nine years ago) link

i totally get not wanting to watch another show about directionless twentysomethings in nyc (whether or not their in the "culture industry" is a pretty pedantic quibble), but anyone old enough to be tired of that trope is also old enough to know that when a show increases in popularity over a season, it's foolish to judge its worth off the pilot

da croupier, Friday, 27 June 2014 23:31 (nine years ago) link

that said my bar for "tv worth buying the episode" would be crazy high, not sure any show would pass

da croupier, Friday, 27 June 2014 23:41 (nine years ago) link

"tv worth buying by the episode" i mean

Even Brooklyn 99?

am0n alb4rn (Whiney G. Weingarten), Saturday, 28 June 2014 15:41 (nine years ago) link

Yes Virginia even Brooklyn 99

da croupier, Saturday, 28 June 2014 15:50 (nine years ago) link

personally thought that show got a lot better over the season, Samberg and Peretti's characters got a lot less shrill

not saying one has some moral obligation to stick with a show after hating an episode, just that if a show becomes more acclaimed with time, it's pretty possible the pilot is nowhere near the best ep

da croupier, Saturday, 28 June 2014 15:54 (nine years ago) link

Did the show get funny at some point too?

am0n alb4rn (Whiney G. Weingarten), Saturday, 28 June 2014 15:57 (nine years ago) link

did you come to the broad city thread to start a conversation about how you hate brooklyn 9-9 or did my claim that pilots of good shows are often gestational works make you think about how much you hated that brooklyn 9-9 episode you saw
