The kitfo and wots at Dukem a few nights ago were as good as, and maybe better than ever. And you can pretend the raw beef is actually horse.

Brian Miller (Brian Miller), Friday, 4 November 2005 15:27 (eighteen years ago) link

I haven't had Ethiopian food in a couple years, but I'd like to try that myself. Kitfo, right? Why not. Sounds pretty good.

Totally unrelated.. but Ally, I think I got my first "WTF are you wearing" look today. I have on one of those scarf tie blouses in black with a vaguely Asian print (vintage early 80's) & just plain old light beige chinos & heels. No one told me they did casual Fridays. I told my new housemate (CAPITOL HILL hooray) I needed some trousers for work in a tall size & she says, well, you could try checking out thee ANN TAYLOR LOFT.

NOOOO

dar1a g (daria g), Friday, 4 November 2005 15:37 (eighteen years ago) link

No one has to justify their soft spot for ponies. At least it's not that panda baby....

You can't go wrong with Etete or Sodere, on 9th between T & U. It'll be a beautiful day, though, so you might want to try the big place on the corner of 9th & U--I haven't tried it, but it has a rooftop deck for basking.

Stephen X (Stephen X), Friday, 4 November 2005 15:38 (eighteen years ago) link

Doodz, curmudgeon and I were just sorta talking about this on an ethiopiques thread over on ILM - etete and dukem are totally recommended. Most of the places I've been to on 9th and U have been great, too.

Also, Ethio-jazz creator Mulatu Astatke is gonna be playing two sets at the Unification Church next Friday night with the Either/Orchestra. It looks totally hott!

Zack Richardson (teenagequiet), Friday, 4 November 2005 15:46 (eighteen years ago) link

haha as much as I lurve horses I'm sure I would eat one if offered. Which was the thread that had the horse sushi discussion? That was awesome! Although I think I would prefer my pony tenderloin medium-rare.

Re: horse gram powder--is a Silver Spring dinner gathering a possibility for next week?

quincie, Friday, 4 November 2005 15:47 (eighteen years ago) link

yeah, next week would be good

Zack Richardson (teenagequiet), Friday, 4 November 2005 15:53 (eighteen years ago) link

yay darla how how is the house (aside from the Ann Taylor Loft issue)? Do you like the job so far?

quincie, Friday, 4 November 2005 15:56 (eighteen years ago) link

The house is nice, but COLD. I am hypersensitive to cold anyway but I swear, there is no heat. Those old rowhouses.. Otherwise lovely, though my stuff is totally disorganized (time for an IKEA run) & I have to deal with DC DMV nightmare before I can do street parking and take the bus instead of driving to work.

Job is grate. I feel incredibly spoiled compared to grad school - what, since when do people want to know how I am doing, if I need anything, everyone is friendly and most seem to like what they are doing? What in the world? And my computer works and they're giving me cool software and they're paying me enough to actually live on? I can't handle it! Please, send me back to grad world where I'm broke and miserable and nobody gives a shit! :)

Hi! Tom and I are going to be moving again cos we've done lost our minds with our neighborhood and our immediate neighbors! Adams Morgan/Woodley Park, let's never fight again!

Hey guess what, looks like we're breaking the lease and moving back into the city. Fuck you Rosslyn! Fuck you right in the hotel business!

TOMBOT, Friday, 4 November 2005 16:35 (eighteen years ago) link

I just said that.

Allyzay must fight Zolton herself. (allyzay), Friday, 4 November 2005 16:36 (eighteen years ago) link

xpost.

TOMBOT, Friday, 4 November 2005 16:36 (eighteen years ago) link

Mr. Kitty will be excited to see his friends the Mexican Truck Dudes again.

TOMBOT, Friday, 4 November 2005 16:37 (eighteen years ago) link

haha take back everything bad you ever said about the district!

mookieproof (mookieproof), Friday, 4 November 2005 16:39 (eighteen years ago) link

Welcome back! Your Green Line train will be ready for you in 22 minutes.

Hell yes to Silver Spring and Mandalay next week. Wednesday? Thursday I'm rolling out for Vet Day, but I don't know if others may be.

Stephen X (Stephen X), Friday, 4 November 2005 16:48 (eighteen years ago) link

anyone up for a thanksgiving weekend fap?

carly (carly), Friday, 4 November 2005 16:52 (eighteen years ago) link

Everything bad we said out DC still stands, it's not like anything got fixed in the interim, it's just that N. Arlington is really THAT MUCH WORSE. Fuck the tax break and the cheap wine and cigarettes. These people are all mentally ill (not you petesmith and bro)

TOMBOT, Friday, 4 November 2005 16:57 (eighteen years ago) link

anyone up for a thanksgiving weekend fap?

only if you're staying in NYC...

mookieproof (mookieproof), Friday, 4 November 2005 17:03 (eighteen years ago) link

"cheap cigarettes"?? We're saving like 50c per pack, Tom. It ain't that much cheaper. And considering the amount of money we have to spend to AVOID BEING IN OUR OWN APARTMENT BECAUSE WE WATCH TV TOO LOUD AND SOMETIMES HAVE SEX OR DROP THINGS OCCASIONALLY TOO, I mean we could go move into Trump Towers and save money. I never told you about the Jesus pamphlet, did I?

Was it on H Street NE where that developer just bought up a bunch of properties?

QUIT SMOKING SO MUCH YOUSE GUYS

dar1a g (daria g), Friday, 4 November 2005 17:11 (eighteen years ago) link

oh, you'll get the Jesus pamphlet in DC too.

and maybe if you're lucky your new neighbors will have a little fountain that runs all the time and sounds like a guy standing outside your window pissing into a puddle LIKE I DO

mookieproof (mookieproof), Friday, 4 November 2005 17:12 (eighteen years ago) link

xpost mookie for god's sake why are you up before noon? I'm sorry, you're just not doing this "no job" thing correctly.

Tom and Ally I know of a lovely one bedroom/one bath/tiny kitchen/minimal storage on the market for ONLY $480,000!

quincie, Friday, 4 November 2005 17:12 (eighteen years ago) link

I'd rather have a neighbor who actually DID piss in a puddle outside my house constantly.

Allyzay must fight Zolton herself. (allyzay), Friday, 4 November 2005 17:16 (eighteen years ago) link

i got up at 10; that's not so bad.

xp you can get that in DC too!

mookieproof (mookieproof), Friday, 4 November 2005 17:17 (eighteen years ago) link

Our street has noize of the DC public works truck (garbage? perhaps?) coming by at MIDNIGHT and then the metrobuses going by all day starting at like 6am.

dar1a g (daria g), Friday, 4 November 2005 17:24 (eighteen years ago) link

The thing is that I wish we were actually having all these drug parties and that Tom was pummeling me and whatever else these people seem to think is going on in the apartment, it'd be so much more interesting than sitting around watching Iron Chef.

Allyzay must fight Zolton herself. (allyzay), Friday, 4 November 2005 17:30 (eighteen years ago) link

Well, since you're about to move anyway.. just put on some Einsturzende Neubauten records and leave them playing whenever you're out.

dar1a g (daria g), Friday, 4 November 2005 17:32 (eighteen years ago) link

yeah, we get trash/recycling pick up in the middle of the night sometimes. our annoyance at the noise is tempered by the realization that, this being DC, it's nice that it's being picked up at all

mookieproof (mookieproof), Friday, 4 November 2005 17:34 (eighteen years ago) link

I live a block from the 2nd Police District headquarters; cops are forever driving around going "bhwoop bhwoop" with the sirens and it annoys the shit out of me. The husband seems to think that they started doing the "bhwoop bhwoop" thing after some other city claimed it was a good way to increase "police awareness" (same with driving around with the lights flashing even when they're not on a call or pulling someone over)--but I've seen nothing to either confirm or deny this theory. I just want them to knock it the hell off!

quincie, Friday, 4 November 2005 17:35 (eighteen years ago) link

It increases "police awareness" but I'm not really sure how that is really accomplishing anything. YES YOU'RE A DOUCHEBAG. WE KNOW.

Allyzay must fight Zolton herself. (allyzay), Friday, 4 November 2005 17:37 (eighteen years ago) link

I remember when they started that flashing-lights thing, Chief Ramsey said he borrowed the idea from the police dept of Tel Aviv. Where peace reigns.

Stephen X (Stephen X), Friday, 4 November 2005 17:46 (eighteen years ago) link

haha yeah speaking of police chiefs, I spotted CHEIF MOOSE and his WIFEY in Travilah Square yesterday. Wonder what that guy is up to? I kind of love him.

quincie, Friday, 4 November 2005 17:50 (eighteen years ago) link

I was hoping his book would be the springboard for a T.J. Hooker-ish TV series. Maybe Chief Moose Investigates, where he sometimes says to hell with procedure and just takes the perp straight to Fist City.

Stephen X (Stephen X), Friday, 4 November 2005 17:58 (eighteen years ago) link

"we understand that it is important for you to hear us say the words 'the duck is in the toilet'"

quincie, Friday, 4 November 2005 18:02 (eighteen years ago) link

or something like that.

quincie, Friday, 4 November 2005 18:04 (eighteen years ago) link

And then he cries a little.

Stephen X (Stephen X), Friday, 4 November 2005 18:19 (eighteen years ago) link

I have to work on the Friday, but I'll be in town.

Re. Silver Spring foody goodness: Wednesday or Thursday both work for me.

DC Celebrity (such as they are) Spotting Dept.: I'm at a coffeehouse, and that wacky Free Money infomercial guy is sitting at the next table in his purple suit with big question marks all over it. He seems pretty non-zany right now--just having a coffee.

Should I ask him for some Free Money?

Stephen X (Stephen X), Friday, 4 November 2005 21:15 (eighteen years ago) link

Well you should at least ask him for some free coffee.

Allyzay must fight Zolton herself. (allyzay), Friday, 4 November 2005 21:18 (eighteen years ago) link

I'm afraid that if I get too close he'll leap into schticky infomercial action. If Richard Simmons shows up to meet him I'm leaving.

Stephen X (Stephen X), Friday, 4 November 2005 21:24 (eighteen years ago) link

If Joe Montana shows up, remember to use Fed Ex.

Allyzay must fight Zolton herself. (allyzay), Friday, 4 November 2005 21:26 (eighteen years ago) link

Sorry, I don't know what that means, I'm kind of out of it right now.

Allyzay must fight Zolton herself. (allyzay), Friday, 4 November 2005 21:26 (eighteen years ago) link

Further proof that Stephen has our dream job: coffee-drinking and people-watching as the rest of us work.

Oh wait I'm on ILX not actually working baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah

quincie, Friday, 4 November 2005 21:27 (eighteen years ago) link

Hey, I'm working! Just, you know, "at home".

If I have to be in a commercial, I want it to be one of the old Lite Beer ones with all the retired NFL guys. And Mickey Spillane.

Stephen X (Stephen X), Friday, 4 November 2005 21:30 (eighteen years ago) link

awesome - matthew le$ko! carly went to high school with his son, and me and naive teen idol's friend used to power his blog (if you know what i mean).

petesmith (plsmith), Friday, 4 November 2005 21:35 (eighteen years ago) link

On closer examination, although his bright-yellow shoes fit in with his overall color scheme, his salmon socks are a disappointment.

Stephen X (Stephen X), Friday, 4 November 2005 21:38 (eighteen years ago) link

Stephen today I heard a horrible story about LoC archivists and LAMINATING! Scandalous!

quincie, Friday, 4 November 2005 21:40 (eighteen years ago) link

Nothing would surprise me about those archivists--they're a degenerate bunch. What were they laminating? And did it hurt to pull the plastic off?

Stephen X (Stephen X), Friday, 4 November 2005 21:43 (eighteen years ago) link

It was George Washington's fucking diary! Although admittedly my source said the diary's content was actually pretty dull farming-type stuff. Anyhow, apparently someone archivist way back when had the bright idea to laminate all the pages. Thanks to new developments in de-laminating technology, it has since been liberated.

I also learned that Milk of Magnesia is the library's preferred de-acidifying solution.

L3sk0's son lived on the same hall at U. of Maryland as a relative of mine. Nice kid. Kind of wacky. Of course.
