The Sophie B. Hawkins Dance episode was the only one in S4 that didn't feel like a faint approximation of Community. But it still wasn't even as good as the worst S3 episodes.

I hated the Sophie B ep

getting strange ass all around the globe (Neanderthal), Monday, 14 April 2014 00:28 (ten years ago) link

The second half of s3 was terrible, particularly in contrast with the first half.

Wahaca Flocka Flame (DJP), Monday, 14 April 2014 00:58 (ten years ago) link

I dunno, I didn't think it was terrible, but it definitely wildly swung for the fences and didn't necessarily succeed. Even if it didn't always bring the lols, I appreciated the shit out of it for going to stupidly absurd lengths to do so.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Monday, 14 April 2014 01:07 (ten years ago) link

i'm fine w/ second half of season 3 and season 3 in general (haven't seen it since it aired but have long suspected season 3's main problem is it had to follow season 2). looking over the episode list though the only two i recall being stone cold classics are chaos theory (obv) and xmas one that took on glee. the l&o one was awesome also but i can't pretend that has much to offer to someone not familiar w/ l&o.

if you watched American TV in the last 20 years you had to have seen some variant of law and order, it was broad enough

Nhex, Monday, 14 April 2014 01:40 (ten years ago) link

man the treeship generation don't even know who outkast are apparently so i'm taking nothing for granted

balls, Monday, 14 April 2014 01:58 (ten years ago) link

man can you imagine not knowing law & order at all? presumably you've also never watched tv on a plane!

da croupier, Monday, 14 April 2014 02:09 (ten years ago) link

I've never watched Law & Order.

the joke should be over once the kid is eaten. (chap), Monday, 14 April 2014 10:23 (ten years ago) link

Sorry, I actually meant S5 has been funnier than the second half of S3. S4 was mostly depressing shit.

Matt DC, Monday, 14 April 2014 15:37 (ten years ago) link

Pretty disappointing finale, but some hilarious moments (the shushing, everyone imitating Dave at the end).

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Friday, 18 April 2014 19:27 (ten years ago) link

I thought it wasn't awful, had a few really solid laughs. The jukebox door was perfect.

djenter the dragon? (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 18 April 2014 19:45 (ten years ago) link

Yeah, that was funny. I think I started to see what stevie was talking about upthread, though, how this really needed to be a 20+ episode season for relationships to properly develop/take root.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Friday, 18 April 2014 19:52 (ten years ago) link

Anyone notice the robot was made by Boobatron?

Stephen King's Threaderstarter (kingfish), Friday, 18 April 2014 19:53 (ten years ago) link

Oh yeah, that makes complete sense. I thought they did a decent job with this one though, I liked the "canon" comment to hedge the renewal bets.

Did you catch the historic facts on the wall timeline? One of the original names considered for the town of Greendale was "Harmon's Heartbreak".

djenter the dragon? (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 18 April 2014 19:55 (ten years ago) link

It was a low key finale to a low key season but I'm just glad Harmon got to right the ship.

da croupier, Friday, 18 April 2014 20:21 (ten years ago) link

I really enjoyed the credits scene.

Fetchboy, Saturday, 19 April 2014 02:02 (ten years ago) link

This could have done with being more Goonies and less Deus Ex Machina I think but this really didn't have the feel of Last Episode Ever.

Best thing about this season was at no point did Chang insert his own name into any other sentence. Always hated that.

Matt DC, Saturday, 19 April 2014 09:27 (ten years ago) link

I was pretty happy with the way they handled Chang this season, until the whole reveal that he was spying on the group. That was a roll my eyes, "again!?!" kind of moment. But this season has been such a massive improvement over the last that it seems weird to hang on to such a minor complaint.

djenter the dragon? (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 21 April 2014 17:31 (ten years ago) link

he was only spying on the group for the last two episodes, thankfully... but yeah, even the show pathetically lamp-shaded it. but yeah, overal best Chang in years

Nhex, Monday, 21 April 2014 17:48 (ten years ago) link

finale was pretty bad, rmde at the whole chris elliott emoticon thing. whole chris elliott character possibly

sort of like last season's finale but with dan harmon cynicism added in

how long until the kickstarter launches?

Nhex, Friday, 9 May 2014 18:55 (ten years ago) link

I can't even be real mad about this, because I have no idea what stories are left to tell in a potential sixth season (much less a fucking movie). Did Troy die at sea? That's all I need to know, I guess.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 9 May 2014 18:56 (ten years ago) link

don't know if harmon can be arsed going to netflix leave alone a begging bowl kickstarter

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Friday, 9 May 2014 18:59 (ten years ago) link

I can't imagine any out there could actually be surprised by this, but it does kinda sting after how much the show bounced back with the 5th season. I guess I'll just be glad it didn't fade out after the awful Season 4.

Yeah, I kind of feel the same way. Sucks that it's done, but at least it went out on a high note. Makes season 4 seem like that much more of a waste, though.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Friday, 9 May 2014 19:02 (ten years ago) link

I'm still not sure season 4 was so much worse than season 5 tbh. Or maybe that season 5 was so much better than its predecessor.

it definitely wasn't designed to be a pants pocket player (stevie), Friday, 9 May 2014 19:03 (ten years ago) link

Season 4 was 85% straight out terrible, I'm not sure how you could even equate the two.

djenter the dragon? (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 9 May 2014 19:05 (ten years ago) link

Yeah, there were massive chunks of S4 that were unwatchable; not even the worst S3 moments were that bad.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Friday, 9 May 2014 19:08 (ten years ago) link

maybe i was watching season 4 braced for the worst. maybe i expected better from season 5. i haven't watched episodes from either season more than once (have watched the previous 3 a bunch of times, season 3 tails off badly too). i don't know what to tell you.

it definitely wasn't designed to be a pants pocket player (stevie), Friday, 9 May 2014 19:10 (ten years ago) link

someone asked a netflix suit earlier this year about a possible pickup and apparently something about the syndication deal they have w/ hulu makes it very difficult for netflix (and presumably amazon) to pick it up.

balls, Friday, 9 May 2014 19:11 (ten years ago) link

i can't remember much about season 4 other than it wasn't as bad as i thought it would be. my immediate feelings about season 5 is that a lot of it didn't work, and losing troy was an unwinnable situation. and i missed chevy more than i thought i would. and they just didn't bother writing much that was interesting for shirley.

it definitely wasn't designed to be a pants pocket player (stevie), Friday, 9 May 2014 19:12 (ten years ago) link

although i think it was lame for dude to jet for the last 7% of the show's run because he needed to get his cornball album out, i liked the dynamic of the episodes without Troy, tbh the pairing with Abed had gotten stale to me and did a lot to limit possibilities for both characters.

some dude, Friday, 9 May 2014 19:24 (ten years ago) link

Yeah, was going to say I thought they handled Troy's absence pretty well.

djenter the dragon? (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 9 May 2014 19:26 (ten years ago) link

one thing i noticed in the commentaries for the early seasons was how they made a point of basing scenes/stories around every possible pairing or grouping of characters and found a way to make those people funny together. things like the Troy/Abed superfriendship reduced that as time went on, so it was fun to see that approach return a bit in season 5.

some dude, Friday, 9 May 2014 19:27 (ten years ago) link

Hoping the cast fatalism is long game minded - why curb audience heartbreak when it could only increase chance of cc/Hulu pick-up. But either way, wahhhhhh. Why u give me good season 5 when hit or miss s3 followed by zombie s4 let me down more gradually?

da croupier, Friday, 9 May 2014 20:23 (ten years ago) link

Harmon is in town doing a podcast taping tomorrow that I'm going to try to attend. We'll see what he says.

Stephen King's Threaderstarter (kingfish), Friday, 9 May 2014 20:23 (ten years ago) link

Rick and Morty having been picked up for a 2nd season softens the blow considerably, I gotta say.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Friday, 9 May 2014 20:26 (ten years ago) link

Wish they'd at least marketed it as a farewell season instead of literally putting "six seasons and a movie" in the network promo

da croupier, Friday, 9 May 2014 20:28 (ten years ago) link

Rick and Morty isn't that good, though

maybe they'll make up for the lost season and give us a Ben Hur length movie

getting strange ass all around the globe (Neanderthal), Friday, 9 May 2014 20:31 (ten years ago) link

tbh I would rather have a movie chronicling Alison Brie's Smirnoff party with Adam Scott

chillin' on an "awesome pretzel" hoagie (DJP), Friday, 9 May 2014 20:33 (ten years ago) link

It sucks that the show had to go out on such a low note. The season 5 finale was a mess.
