Embarcadero BART most nuts I've ever seen it in my five+ years of commuting to the east bay. Lines up all the escalators and through the entrances.

some got run over at montgomery station
― just1n3, Tuesday, 15 April 2014 01:36 (ten years ago) link
When I got to Montgomery station, BART cops were telling everybody the station was closed and to leave. As they were doing so, someone came on the PA system and said the station was open. The cops didn't seem to hear, so there was this weird brief moment where we were starting to push toward the gates while the cops were shaking their heads and trying to walk us back. Someone with a video camera filmed me and a few others going through the gates. Went downstairs and my train rolled up with hardly anybody on it. Impeccable timing! Once everybody piled on from Embarc station, it got hot and sweaty, though.
Cool story, huh.

Seems like a lot of people have been getting hit by trains lately.
currently having a FB argument with a friend who thinks SF's housing supply problem is caused by rent control :/

It is great, but also highlights (in a million different ways) how difficult it will be to fix this problem.

“…the war on tech workers—as opposed to tech companies or policies— is not really a “class war.” Rather, it is about one group of predominately white people complaining about a similar demographic group that likes many of the same restaurants, bars, street festivals, and Samba classes that they do—but who makes more money.”
randy shaw otm, it always seemed weird to me that tech workers have become this villain down there but it seems like it's been a pretty effective tactic? at least w/r/t the ellis act compensation, getting the mayor's attention, other promising legislation being proposed, etc

i guess that would be better than nothing, but yeah what a terrible law. has anyone ever come up with a reasonable transition strategy for a repeal? seems like it would be incredibly difficult to pull off both logistically and politically

upthread someone mentioned something about having it only supply to someone's primary residence, which makes a ton of sense to me. i'm politically naive, but what does the counter-argument look like? "but what about the millionaires with second homes in Carmel?"
― ugh (lukas), Thursday, 17 April 2014 17:35 (ten years ago) link
supply -> apply

― ugh (lukas), Thursday, 17 April 2014 17:36 (ten years ago) link
I think you'd need to have some pretty long (20 year?) transition period.
― schwantz, Thursday, 17 April 2014 17:37 (ten years ago) link
"but what about the millionaires with second homes in Carmel?"
when you have pissed off millionaires and property rights advocates you don't need a rational argument

upthread someone mentioned something about having it only supply to someone's primary residence, which makes a ton of sense to me.
the more i think about this the less it makes sense. why would this not just result in massive, widespread rent hikes?
― hug niceman (psychgawsple), Thursday, 17 April 2014 18:08 (ten years ago) link
my assumption is that landlords are already gouging market rate renters as much as they can? idk though, good point.
― ugh (lukas), Thursday, 17 April 2014 19:14 (ten years ago) link
yeah, even with the passing of prop 13 certain landlords hiked up rents for some reason! i could only imagine what it would be like if they took an actual financial hit
― hug niceman (psychgawsple), Thursday, 17 April 2014 19:25 (ten years ago) link
To the extent it equalizes the tax base between newer and older buildings, I guess it would lower the rent on newer buildings and raise it on older ones, assuming the total amount raised from property taxes is held constant. If the amount raised from property taxes is increased, then presumably other forms of income such as sales taxes could be decreased.
― o. nate, Thursday, 17 April 2014 20:33 (ten years ago) link
landlords are already gouging market rate renters as much as they can? Gouging is a leading word but, yes, of course, landlords are maximising their profits as much as the market allows.
The counter-argument might be made by the building trades and their overlords but the public good of having a saner tax base and investing it in education is insuperable.
When you have a general consensus across party (and ind) lines, why tf would you not do this? Oligarchy?

On a lighter note, my buddy's movie doc is showing in the San Francisco area as part of a film festival:
Catch "Led Zeppelin Played Here" at Oakland School for the Arts on June 8th at 5pm or at Roxy Theater in SF on June 14th at 9pm.
Directed by Jeff Krulik (Heavy Metal Parking Lot), this documentary takes a look at the epic and possibly mythical 1969 performance Led Zeppelin gave in the gym of the Wheaton, MD Youth Center in front of 50 confused teenagers. Krulik tracks down just about everyone who might have been there that Monday night, which also happened to be the evening of Richard Nixon's Presidential Inauguration.
