so yeah it seems like it was rushed. or at least done much faster than the iphone, which took two and a half years.

I bought a Basis B1 watch yesterday - it's kind of ugly but has all the usual Fitbit/Up features and a heart rate monitor. I guess we'll see how it goes.

If Apple could nail a fitness device that interacts with an iPhone (sans the dumber features of the Galaxy watch), it could be huge. Everyone wants to quantify their steps taken and blood sugar constantly etc etc.

i don't really see it, but I won't say it's impossible. as mentioned, the fitness calculators don't seem like a huge market to me (lol 'murica)

I'm at the point in my life where I need a machine to tell me to walk more. Therefore I like the new wave of designery infographic fitness apps that use the motion processor in the iPhone 5s. Much of them seem to be developer tech demos/app portfolios, but at least they subscribe to that do one thing well developer philosophy. Punch in my height, carry my phone around with me for a week, and then quantify exactly how much I've been promoting Sloth.

Feels like Nike has been trying to blow this market up for years (iirc Apple hired a guy away from Nike) like they have that dongle you put in your shoe and it surfs the web or something

Maybe it just needs the Apple touch to make it really successful

But it also feels like maybe Apple was looking around and seeing what other people in SF were doing

And it was a bunch of nerdy young white instant millionaires doing Crossfit and getting bodyfat scales and obsessively punching in calories consumed per day into their iPhone apps

And making shakes that remove the need to eat

And I dunno if that can extrapolate onto General America

I don't understand the blood sugar thing. Does it have a needle on the bottom and prick your skin hourly?

dan selzer, Tuesday, 15 April 2014 14:06 (ten years ago) link

imo the metrics alone are a starting point and things are just finally getting to the point where the sensors work reliably and the devices are wearable without being dumb

actually doing useful things with the data is the big black hole. there are some neat apps now that try to pull things together, but I haven't seen any one that's awesome

blood sugar can be monitored with infrared detection, iirc, but I'm not sure how good it is right now

This sucker is pretty cool, but I couldn't be bothered to input every time I have caffeine, which probably says a lot about my caffeine consumption and less about their application:
https://jawbone.com/up/coffee

I haven't used it for a few months but the feature on the jawbone band that'd wake you around the designated time when you're already in a lighter phase of sleep worked pretty well.

a strange man (mh), Tuesday, 15 April 2014 14:18 (ten years ago) link

i was just spending way too much time on a long post about this, but i nuked it. rip.

markers, Tuesday, 15 April 2014 14:26 (ten years ago) link

if you know apple in the abstract, know and understand their history, and have been following the leaks surrounding this product, a lot of what they end up revealing shouldn't be a surprise

markers, Tuesday, 15 April 2014 14:29 (ten years ago) link

dan, people have developed tech that does all of that through the skin. or some of that. but apparently it might still be a little fucked up and not ready for market.

markers, Tuesday, 15 April 2014 14:30 (ten years ago) link

know apple in the abstract

I barely know myself, how can I be expected to know a company of thousands?

a strange man (mh), Tuesday, 15 April 2014 14:52 (ten years ago) link

you know what i mean! i waste a lot of time on this shit. too much!

markers, Tuesday, 15 April 2014 14:52 (ten years ago) link

look, i don't have many things i can claim any sort of expertise on, but this is one of them

markers, Tuesday, 15 April 2014 14:53 (ten years ago) link

i don't know anything about music compared to most of the people here. i know more about apple than almost anyone.

markers, Tuesday, 15 April 2014 14:53 (ten years ago) link

if you want to be really cool in life, say "i know more about apple than almost anyone"

markers, Tuesday, 15 April 2014 14:54 (ten years ago) link

it gets you a lot of friends and members of whatever sex(es) you're into

markers, Tuesday, 15 April 2014 14:54 (ten years ago) link

markers, reading a ton of online speculation isn't expertise, it's fandom. I've been there for a few things.

markers, Tuesday, 15 April 2014 14:58 (ten years ago) link

markers, Tuesday, 15 April 2014 14:58 (ten years ago) link

none of my irl friends are into this shit. hell, most of my online friends aren't into this shit either. it's a lonely life, watching steve jobs doing shit ad nauseum on youtube.

I have this! I can kind of see the remnants of a fetish object in it. Maybe the bauhaus trajectory is to become invisible.

yeah the abandonments rate for wearables is vv high, like if youre a fitness freak i can see it but its just too easy to stop doing it, speaking as someone w a lonely running watch

lag∞n, Tuesday, 15 April 2014 18:41 (ten years ago) link

I could see wearing it to sleep pretty regularly. I think I was on vacation and just didn't get back in the habit when I got home. Great alarm clock.

I've had a browser tab open to that damn dieter rams universal shelving all day, kind of pondering if it'd be awesome in my house

a strange man (mh), Tuesday, 15 April 2014 20:29 (ten years ago) link
