i hate literally all criticism of this show & so will ruin this thread myopically defending it but i can't watch two episodes of this without being so freshly reminded of just the feeling of being alive, of life & the space between people; the argument and the violin scene are exquisite examples of this & weariness with this, as if it's always achieved by the same means or else is some kind of party trick, is kind of mindblowing to me

The editing on this show is tremendous
from reddit via facebook:
to Jim Norton in the club:
Amia: Nagyon hülye vagy! Kicsit se vagy vicces!(Amia translated: You are very stupid. And not funny at all!)
Last scene of ep.8while in bed: "this was a big mistake. we ruined a good thing we had. do you understand?"as she is getting up: "we'll fix it somehow"walking out the door: "everything will be alright""

what is wrong with you. there is no conceit. he cast an actress to play his ex-wife. that actress is black.
do you not want actresses to have jobs if they are not white
To clarify it's purely because their kids are white that I find it distracting. I'd feel exactly the same way if a show cast a white woman as the biological mother of black children FWIW.

Why is it distracting though

todd barry strand of this was just so much fun

Don't think I quite knew what a 'shit-eating grin' meant til I saw his sequence

would be very surprised if that wasn't an adaptation of an actual todd barry story

so the flashback, where they decided to get divorced and had sex one last time - is that the wife with whom he had his kids, and is now divorced, and with whom he's trying to sort out jane's issues with school?

i think so.
the younger guy playing younger louis had louis ck's mannerisms and way of speaking down pat

yes, that's louis and his ex-wife

cool. he was definitely a good young-louis.

the pacing and framing of this show is unlike anything else. It's not always funny but it's... something
― Οὖτις, Wednesday, 28 May 2014 22:52 (ten years ago) link
what makes louie brilliant is that louis knows there's greater things than LOLs
― it definitely wasn't designed to be a pants pocket player (stevie), Thursday, 29 May 2014 08:23 (ten years ago) link
uh, a lot of people who don't have as much talent as louis c.k. know that.
― display name changed. (amateurist), Thursday, 29 May 2014 08:36 (ten years ago) link
The flashback sequence would have been amazing/perfect were it not for the last line. Like, we get that it's Lily's conception already.
― Simon H., Thursday, 29 May 2014 18:49 (ten years ago) link
it thought wasn't just exposition, though. it actually made her laugh, which is important to louis because she usually denies him that connection/approval. she was fighting it in that "for $800..." scene because that's like giving in for her; it breaks the tension in their dynamic.

I generally like this show but I watched the louis'-daughter-nearly-walk-in-front-of-a-subway-train episode last night and it was so boring. The bit with the russian lady getting trapped in a lift was pretty formulaic farce as well.
― everyday sheeple (Michael B), Friday, 30 May 2014 11:28 (ten years ago) link
she didn't nearly walk in front of a subway train
― Number None, Friday, 30 May 2014 13:29 (ten years ago) link
ok i tuned in at the point where he was giving out to her about it
― everyday sheeple (Michael B), Friday, 30 May 2014 14:27 (ten years ago) link
Yeah, I guess watching the very, very end of a long sequence without any context is probably pretty boring.
― Surprise, It's My Butt (Old Lunch), Friday, 30 May 2014 14:45 (ten years ago) link
Yeah, the idea of a young girl saying "daddy, it's ok this is just a dream" and stepping off a train seconds before the doors close, then being approached by a stranger, while her father takes multiple trains and runs through stations screaming while the older sister tries to calm him while trying to stay calm, totally boring!
― dan selzer, Friday, 30 May 2014 14:47 (ten years ago) link
Like opening a page of a good short story and reading it out of context.
― That's So (Eazy), Friday, 30 May 2014 14:59 (ten years ago) link
Turns out I find this show much less compelling when Louie isn't onscreen, the flashback scene bored me.
Ivanka was hilarious in the last episode though.

90 minute episode?!
― Οὖτις, Monday, 2 June 2014 17:16 (ten years ago) link
That was dumb. I didn't like this episode at all. The stand-up near the end was just boring and interminable, and I don't know what he expects us to think about the sexual assault scene after that.

i thought the sandy thing felt very very very honest and true to my experience in a lot of ways, if not to the letter than certainly in spirit

I'd assume that the episode was in the can for a while. Maybe I'm wrong, I don't know how those things work.
― dan selzer, Wednesday, 4 June 2014 05:00 (ten years ago) link
Oh yeah, I don't think it was done after the shooting, but it makes the whole routine and episode resonate even more.
― That's So (Eazy), Wednesday, 4 June 2014 05:01 (ten years ago) link
It felt very specific to the episode and the theme of Louie being heartbroken and ignoring Grodin's talk and being desperate. I guess it depends on how it plays out in the coming episodes (This was Pamela: Part 1 but the next two episodes are Into the Woods Parts 1 and 2 so maybe we'll go back to Pamela in the final week?).
― Insane Prince of False Binaries (Gukbe), Wednesday, 4 June 2014 05:03 (ten years ago) link
After the rape joke thing last year he's definitely aware of what he's doing, especially in that scene. It's blocked and shot to be as menacing and pathetic as possible.
