Things I eat at the fair every year: jerk chicken roti from Harry Singh's (because I don't get to his actual restaurant often enough), deep fried pickles (gtfo with chocolate and powdered sugar though), deep fried turkey sandwich, and an andouille from Sausage by Cynthia. And I really love the stuffed green pepper (from the little hut that's shaped just like one.)

These are all last year's new foods.

i never made it to harry singh's despite living not that far away, on a scale of one to remorse what am i feeling

Depends on if there are a ton of really good Caribbean restaurants where you are now? Mpls really has no others. (I've been following him to various locations since the 80s.)

i live in rural NH, there is nothing here, food exists in dreams only
― gbx, Thursday, 5 June 2014 03:16 (ten years ago) link
Aw man, then I guess remorse might be appropriate. It's an overly-lit hole in the wall, and there's no beer license - he makes his own ginger beer and peanut punch, and there's Ting! - but the food is incredible, the hot sauce is serious, and there's soca on the cassette player. Pretty much heaven in MN imo.

Minnesotans - I will be visiting your fine state for the first time in July. Thought I'd ask if anyone would like to gather for a drink or something the night of July 16th. Would love to meet folks.

I might be due for a mpls weekend this summer. I look down my nose at your fair, though.

don't know how many of you make it over to Lowertown on the reg and maybe this is old news but the Bedlam is reopening there after 4 years thanks in part to the tireless efforts of a dear friend of mine.
visiting last month on a beautiful weekend, going to parades, backyard bonfires, etc, made me wonder why the hell I left. then I remembered that it snowed the week before.

I'm hoping to make it to MPLSSTPL in July as well. Will watch this space.

sorry, it was from the perspective of the iowa state fair. it's not much of an incline, to be fair
― mh, Thursday, 12 June 2014 18:12 (ten years ago) link
I am still really annoyed that I went to east siders' night at the iowa state fair last year and saw zero fights! Damn it, that is where the fights are supposed to be.
― mh, Thursday, 12 June 2014 18:13 (ten years ago) link
Fights over deep fried pickle twinkies.
― Cronk's Not Cronk (Eric H.), Thursday, 12 June 2014 18:16 (ten years ago) link
iirc the bud tent (really a building) is the single location with the most budweiser served per year, nationwide, and it's only open for the iowa fair

Mitchell, the U sophomore, says many students have gotten used to ignoring the "overabundance" of signs and signals along Washington. Now, they'll have to start paying more attention. New signs and road markings might be confusing to some bicyclists at first, said Chase Taylor, a sophomore who bikes on campus.
Taylor, who is from Reno, Nev., said he rarely has ventured across the Mississippi River since starting at the U. In St. Paul, he'd like to check out several music venues and the Science Museum of Minnesota."St. Paul was never easy to access from campus," Taylor said. "It's a whole new city to explore."

welp the train does go down p. much one of the 4 main ways to get from the east bank to saint paul, and it's not like 2 of the others (over franklin bridge, over lake/marshall bridge, or i guess even the back way thru prospect park) are inaccessible to bikers
unless you're a college student
― j., Friday, 13 June 2014 15:58 (ten years ago) link
ah, I get it now. That guy must be one of the dudes whose chain is just a mass of rust, seat is down as low as it can go, and "bikes on campus" means "bikes exclusively on campus"
― Dan I., Friday, 13 June 2014 16:25 (ten years ago) link
i figured he was just one of thousands of students who are trepidatious about going anywhere outside the campus zone, or just can't think of any reason why to

omg the stone arch bridge is fucking amazing tonight; beyond it being a perfect evening, the mississippi is absolutely raging right now because of all the rains, they've got the lock and dam open, and the effect is not unlike blasting a firehose down a small sluice. the amount of water pumping through there is unbelievable... if you've been through a lock and dam it's not hard to picture the horror of capsizing in it, because the sheer force going through there is immense, but overall it is mesmerizing and amazing. the 15 minutes i spent there almost makes up for this winter...
