the present-day Groundlings any good?
I didn’t go to Groundlings (or IO West) on my passes through Hollywood last year (saw big queues outside the Groundlings though), but looking at stuff this week: there’s Paul F Tompkins’ monthly Varietopia show at Largo on Saturday night, Reid Scott off of Veep appearing at a current-affairs-comedy-quiz-show at Meltdown, Wil Anderson & Dan Harmon & Sam Simmons & Moshe Kasher at a Prompter show at UCB, Marc Maron doing both rooms at the Store, and I would have gone to The Smartest Man In The World free at Bar Lubitsch on Tuesday night.

xpost -- Damn, if I weren't getting ready to head north for a week on Saturday morning I would be there, but I gotta use Friday night to pack, clean, etc. Best to everyone! Another time!

Excuse my street team pr for a friend's movie:
August 147:30 p.m.The Silent Movie Theater611 N. Fairfax AvenueLos Angeles, CA 90036
Hosted by: Don’t Knock the Rock
Master documentarian Jeff Krulik will make his magnificent return to Los Angeles with his latest blockbuster, Led Zeppelin Played Here, which digs deep into the mystery of the classic rock group playing a micro-venue in Maryland. Did the band really play? Or is the tale just a hallucinogenic myth conjured up by pranksters?
Krulik will be in attendance and will participate in a post-screening Q&A session hosted by musican and actor Michael Des Barres.

My sister and I are trying to decide whether to take the VIP Paramount studio tour (4 hours) or the regular tour (2 hours). Does anyone have any experience with either?
― Virginia Plain, Monday, 20 October 2014 19:30 (nine years ago) link
The regular tour was OK and long enough for me; not much emphasis on vintage stuff, obviously. I don't know what the VIP adds, but if it's to do with contemporary production, I wouldn't care.

Too bad about the Cat & Fiddle. Kim Gardner of The Creation was running it for a long time until he died in the early 2000s.

My sister opted for the VIP tour. . . .
I'll be in L.A. this weekend . . . anything interested going on?
So far our plans are Paramount Studios, Hollywood Forever Cemetery, the Dresden, maybe a Brewery Art Walk, maybe a Singaporean Crab Fest in Little Tokyo.

My birthday is this Thursday and in a shocking display of public celebration, we'll be at the HMS Bounty from 8 to 11. Come by the H.M.S. Bounty sometime between 8 and 11, have a drink, have a steak, but more importantly say hi and hang out.

I love how so many of your bars play TCM! Did Paramount tour, Hollywood Forever tour, the Dresden with Marty and Elaine (I thought they would be better but the Dresden was amazing). Visited Echo Park (last time it was under construction), Amoeba, Cat & Fiddle, Ye Rustic Inn, the Last Bookstore, and Skylight Books. There was too long a wait at Daikokuya so we ate at Suehiro Cafe in Little Tokyo, which I thought was really good. We also went to the Brewery Arts Complex, where it was interesting to snoop around peoples studios/homes. My sister drove me around the Arts District as well.
I love L.A.! But it was really hot. I hope to come back for a longer visit in February.

If you're willing to go into Highland Park, you might also try the Greyhound. I think it's just beer and wine, though.
