deadline saying there's a chance o'brien is back in the writer's room, there's a smaller chance jost is and o'brien does update (they just say 'some are calling' for that so don't hold yr breath).

I would take O'Brien at the WU desk, though I'm still a firm believer that Cecily Strong can probably do a good job there solo. Jost is the fucking WORST, though.

O'Brien and Strong are dating; they could be the first couple to host WU!

my 'trick' for when i inevitably date rashida to get her dad to like me is to just bring this up -
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8W9RDMnuU_E
- and he'll be like "you know about 'state of independence'?" and i'll be like 'dude!' and then sing the entire thing and at the end he'll put his arm around me and go 'welcome to the family...son'.

Any dude that can come up with the Sanford and Son theme is a genius in my eyes. There's so much good shit going on in that short little song it's ridiculous.

Cast finalizations always seem to be last minute with SNL. When's the season premiere anyway?
― Johnny Fever, Saturday, 6 September 2014 06:46 (nine years ago) link
Iggy Azalea and Ariana Grande have been confirmed as the premiere musical guests, and there were reports earlier today that Bill Murray would be hosting, but they've all been pulled down now. It was either bullshit or the story got out too early.
― Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 9 September 2014 22:10 (nine years ago) link
Definitely odd that no new cast members have been announced...unless there are no new cast members. But when was the last time that happened?
― Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Tuesday, 9 September 2014 22:15 (nine years ago) link

Answering my own q, it's 9/27.
― Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 9 September 2014 22:17 (nine years ago) link
SNL cast announcement do come late, but at just over two weeks until the premiere, this is probably the latest ever.
they recently held auditions so i think the word could come any time

Sarah Silverman!
― Οὖτις, Wednesday, 10 September 2014 16:17 (nine years ago) link
Good host choices, dull music choices.
Still suspect Bill Murray will host. The stories that were accidentally posted yesterday probably just had the hosts out of order.
― Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 10 September 2014 16:25 (nine years ago) link
luckily the musical perfs are always cut from On Demand so I never have to watch them
― Οὖτις, Wednesday, 10 September 2014 16:26 (nine years ago) link
they seem especially pointless in the internet age, and they're never really any good...? back in the day there was at least the novelty of seeing a band you might otherwise not have many opportunities to see actually performing (the Pogues, Sun Ra, etc.), much less on television; and then there was the novelty of maybe occasionally someone doing something unpredictable (Elvis, Sinead) but nowadays seriously who cares
― Οὖτις, Wednesday, 10 September 2014 16:28 (nine years ago) link
That's a good point. They should at least chop it down to one song instead of two so they can cram in another sketch.
― Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 10 September 2014 16:30 (nine years ago) link
that sounds like a bad idea, relatively speaking

Believe it or not, Carson Daly's show kind of gets it right. They send crews out to venues where bands are already having shows and film those shows. Granted, Carson's reach extends to about 5 different places in Los Angeles, and they plug and play songs from certain tapings into their own show up to a year after the fact, but if this concept were better executed by one of the New York shows it could be good.

They did this for a few shows in the 1998-99 season. I remember Elliott Smith only did one song, and I don't think it was because the show was running long.
― Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Wednesday, 10 September 2014 17:50 (nine years ago) link
Whereas I've seen way more instances of a third musical performance in recent years than I ever remember previously. I don't know if I remember that ever happening in the '80s or '90s.
― Rocking In The Broad Daylight (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 10 September 2014 17:53 (nine years ago) link
Back to the upcoming hosts, I hope the writers leave room in sketches for Chris Pratt to improv a little bit. He's super gifted in that department.

― da croupier, Wednesday, 10 September 2014 18:00 (nine years ago) link
I wonder how much they're getting off the Budweiser sponsorships for the musical performances now. NBC probably doesn't want to chop that in half, no matter how little it might be.
― Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 10 September 2014 18:02 (nine years ago) link
XP They did the same thing with Eric Clapton. It was kind of funny because it felt like after every other sketch it was like, "...and once again, Eric Clapton!" It felt like he did ten songs.

― "a bit of goatery, some demonry" (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Friday, 12 September 2014 01:59 (nine years ago) link
Michael Che is so great. I think a Cecily Strong and Michael Che team could've been great, but Colin Jost is going to continue driving the shit into the ground no matter who he's paired with.
Apparently Cecily asked to leave WU so she could concentrate more on sketches, so that's our loss. But...ugh, FUCK Colin Jost and whatever Lorne Michaels sees in him.

Colin Quinn was indeed terrible at the WU desk, but somehow I feel more invested in the show's inner politics now than I ever did in the 90s.
― Johnny Fever, Friday, 12 September 2014 02:40 (nine years ago) link
Nobody could ever be worse than colin quinn its true. At least jost can read.
― Οὖτις, Friday, 12 September 2014 02:42 (nine years ago) link
Che and Strong would've been perfect, and Strong really started to get comfortable (and hilarious) last season.
I don't care that Jost can read. I would vastly prefer a WU anchor who constantly squints at the cue cards and phonetically sounds out every word to Jost.
