Feel like this is the last great unsolved identification mystery of ilx, since we found forks' rap song and Tuomas' typewriter movie.

There is a new app describing itself as the shazam for art, called magnus. Very much doubt it would nail this, unfortunately I'm stuck on ios 7 and can't put it to the test.

I think of this thread/pic from time to time and disappear down a several-hour Google Images rabbithole every time. Hopefully one day the mystery will be solved.
(no Magnus for Android yet so I can't try it out either, but their FAQ says there will be one eventually)

I gave Magnus a try. App initially thought it was Rothko and then gave up.
Before I got to that point though, I had to re-read this entire thread and then spend a hour searching the net. This is one of ILX's best black holes.

You know how with photobucket you can get your pictures printed on a canvas? You should do that with this one.

I haven't found it but I recently stumbled across Yaacov Agam, and I wouldn't be amazed if the photo above was by the same person as these:

He seems to be famous for 'agamographs', which change depending on the viewer's angle. It's hard to tell if the piece in the original post is one.

― jmm, Tuesday, 7 February 2017 14:48 (seven years ago) link
I think the original is not an agamograph (I spent more time than I should have staring at the shadows on the original pic, can't see any suggestions of the ridges). I do like the thought that we might have seen the work in online image searches for ages, but *from the wrong angle*.

Are there any other threads similar to this that try to identify poor resolution art work/posters from the past?
