I keep trying to think of reasons why I would find one useful but most of those times are when I don't have my phone on me, which means the watch won't work

iatee, Wednesday, 10 September 2014 15:12 (nine years ago) link

I think it'll work, it'll just do a lot less

⌘-B (mh), Wednesday, 10 September 2014 15:13 (nine years ago) link

like it might just... tell time

it doesnt seem to do too much, payments, notifications, health tracking

lag∞n, Wednesday, 10 September 2014 15:14 (nine years ago) link

Good tips, Jon. I'm going to be looking into all of my options now (my own 4-5 year old 160 GB classic, which is by far the longest-lived of the iPods I've owned, is starting to get a little wonky). I've stuck with the iPod/iTunes combo because I've put so much work (10+ years?) into meticulously crafting my playlists and ratings and it's so easy to sync up whatever I want to listen to on a given day. Not looking forward to putting a ton of time into a whole new setup.

health tracking is something imho the vast majority of people pro arent that interested in, payments almost nowhere accepts it yet, notifications ok this seems like a pretty terrible experince, def seems like its at the very least prob not a good idea to get the first one

I don't want to share with anyone. I don't want to make it easier to pay for anything. I don't want my heartbeats in a cloud. To be honest, I really don't give a fuck what time it is right now. It's either night or day, hungry or not hungry.

I have no interest in this, but I would never wear a watch either. I guess people who are into watches might like it, but it seems like there are less and less of those people.

To be fair though, I didn't really get the point of the ipad initially either (why not just buy a small laptop which can do more things?), so I'm not sure why I'm commenting here, since I'm obviously not very smart when it comes to predicting the success of this stuff.

most people probably don't want to actually see the horrifying data about how unfit they are

As this study of behavior change and wearables found, "the dirty secret" about these devices is that they "fail to drive long-term sustained engagement for a majority of users." After a few months, the novelty wears off, excitement wanes, and people are back to their old ways, if they ever changed them to begin with.

Those who use the devices religiously over the longer term tend to be health focused already. Wearables are just another tool in their already well-stacked fitness arsenal.

yeah I'm not into the biometrics stuff, I find it very irritating actually. I just like the idea of having this neat little watch that tells me when I get e-mails and text messages and shit -- not something I'd actually shell out hundreds of dollars for but if it was just like this $50 accessory for the phone I'd get one. I also have a feeling, though, that it's going to be like the iPad where it's just going to *feel* really good to use and you won't understand until you try it.

'arry Goldman (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 10 September 2014 15:28 (nine years ago) link

I want to be freed from the constant anxious reaching into the pocket to "check," but maybe it's a fantasy that the watch would solve that problem

'arry Goldman (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 10 September 2014 15:29 (nine years ago) link

damn u dont have to pay 4 hundo ill let you know when you have emails: always

OTM. After railing about what an obvious disaster it'd be for the company, the iPad's wild success totally shut my mouth. You could put that little white apple on an iToaster and it'd be the best selling toaster of all time.

yeah this is pretty true

I should check out the non-scientist/non-IT people and see if they are into this stuff. Maybe some in HR, but their building has the fitness center (aka "the gym") in the basement.

Think what annoyed me most was how they boasted they had 'consulted with horology experts' or w/e that was

Like I feel like part of the ingredient to Apple's success was to reinvent the product market they were entering?

Or that's the MBA business school 'case study' narrative of the iPod, iPhone, and iPad

Here though instead of 'unthinking' the idea of the watch

They seemed very consciously trying to capture a slice of the existing luxury watch market

Which is why we have a bullshit "Edition" version with 18K gold that's marketed as 'twice as hard as ordinary gold' as if Apple had a patent on it

, Wednesday, 10 September 2014 15:33 (nine years ago) link

you think gold was cool before? our gold is better.

⌘-B (mh), Wednesday, 10 September 2014 15:34 (nine years ago) link

apple def surrendering to business school thinking w this one rip

lag∞n, Wednesday, 10 September 2014 15:35 (nine years ago) link

The other problem is that most of what the watch does is not exclusive to the watch and is better handled by your phone (i.e. notifications for getting emails, texts, viewing and reading and responding to those said things)

The only functions exclusive to the watch are the health functions, and sending doodles of penises to other WATCH users, and maybe Pay because it'd be more convenient than taking your phone out?

i just want a cheapo watch (<$25) to track my heart rate

Nhex, Wednesday, 10 September 2014 15:39 (nine years ago) link

Timing on this also seems very odd

They're gonna miss this year's holiday season

Gonna come out 'early 2015'

Coulda easily held this off for one more year

Done an announcement a year from today

Ready to ship by Black Friday

Sold a bunch to early adopters

Now instead people are gonna have at least half a year to ruminate and think

I don't want a stupid fucking watch even if it's Apple

, Wednesday, 10 September 2014 15:42 (nine years ago) link

I wanted a watch but I wanted it to be sweeter than this

iatee, Wednesday, 10 September 2014 15:42 (nine years ago) link

like some wrap around screen that looked like maybe it shoots lasers

iatee, Wednesday, 10 September 2014 15:43 (nine years ago) link

yeah i wish my running watch tracked my pulse instead of having to wear the cumbersome heart rate monitor across my chest which ive never done, maybe the new ones do now idk

I think the unknown variable is how much of a status symbol / fashion symbol having one of these will be

iatee, Wednesday, 10 September 2014 15:47 (nine years ago) link

I find that stuff that tells me calories, distance etc. just demotivates me -- it's like "Oh cool, I've done exactly 400 calories gonna stop now" instead of just pushing myself until I feel like I worked hard.

'arry Goldman (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 10 September 2014 15:48 (nine years ago) link

Definitely this -- google glass is an unmitigated disaster in this regard so far, whereas the watch is pretty nice looking but maybe still SLIGHTLY dorky, kind of not sure until I see more IRL.

imho the status aspect of the iphone at least has always been overrated, like it exists but it wouldnt have much sway if they didnt work so good
