feel like the status aspect was pretty big in the early era, when they didn't actually work so good

They didn't work so good but they were so much better than everything else at the time iirc

otm, also worth noting they didnt sell very many at the begining

if a decent # of early adopting rich ppls decide they kinda like paying for something w/ their apple watch, maybe there's this hustle for stores to sign up, the payments network develops into something actually kinda useful

iatee, Wednesday, 10 September 2014 15:54 (nine years ago) link

Contactless payment is incredibly convenient if done right

, Wednesday, 10 September 2014 15:55 (nine years ago) link

i think the idea is they will use the same stations at the cards with chips that are finally coming to america soon do

lag∞n, Wednesday, 10 September 2014 15:55 (nine years ago) link

so apple doesnt really have to worry abt the infurstructure

lag∞n, Wednesday, 10 September 2014 15:56 (nine years ago) link

of course instead of buying the $400 watch u cld just take yr wallet out and wave it in from of the sensor too

lag∞n, Wednesday, 10 September 2014 15:56 (nine years ago) link

Or your phone

that takes way too much effort I am not a fitness freak

iatee, Wednesday, 10 September 2014 15:57 (nine years ago) link

ideally I won't even have to move my arm

iatee, Wednesday, 10 September 2014 15:57 (nine years ago) link

easier to use yr wallet tho as u dont have to do the confirmation step

lag∞n, Wednesday, 10 September 2014 15:58 (nine years ago) link

This was fun for about three weeks.

Figure calorie counting goes right up there.

pplains, Wednesday, 10 September 2014 15:59 (nine years ago) link

I think they should make a version of the watch armed with a single, tiny tranq dart.

'arry Goldman (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 10 September 2014 15:59 (nine years ago) link

Apple's fashion segment is "affordable luxury" and the WATCH is a piece of jewelry.

Spirit of Match Game '76 (silby), Wednesday, 10 September 2014 16:00 (nine years ago) link

seen people who are pretty slick at just touching their pockets which contain their card keys to the sensor that lets them into their work

lag∞n, Wednesday, 10 September 2014 16:00 (nine years ago) link

i'm outside the target demo for this (imo misguided) WATCH, but watches should be cool and stylish, basically jewelry with some functionality. fitness watches should be as cheap, light, durable, and unprecious as possible. not having a chest strap would be cool tho. fwiw i guess i think the watch looks cool and stylish.

When google glass was first getting hype I had a vague idea for a cultural crit essay about "the age of self-surveillance"

'arry Goldman (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 10 September 2014 16:01 (nine years ago) link

I think the watch is going to mystify the hxc nerd segment for a while b/c it doesn't "do enough"

Spirit of Match Game '76 (silby), Wednesday, 10 September 2014 16:01 (nine years ago) link

the watch just looks like a watch to me, if I saw someone wearing it on the subway I wouldn't notice

iatee, Wednesday, 10 September 2014 16:02 (nine years ago) link

I mean I would now, but I wouldn't two days ago

iatee, Wednesday, 10 September 2014 16:02 (nine years ago) link

as designed imo

this is true but imo what communicates that luxury is how they make extremely functional things and if this watch isnt good for much its not going to sell cause as jewelry its no good, the apple brand isnt going to be effective if theyre not actually embodying it

lag∞n, Wednesday, 10 September 2014 16:04 (nine years ago) link

I was wondering if they're going to have famous watchmakers design "faces" for it for extra $

i suspect watch enthusiasts wld say otherwise

lag∞n, Wednesday, 10 September 2014 16:05 (nine years ago) link

I mean I don't want to go overboard on stanning for this watch b4 it even properly exists, it might not become a huge category for them next year or maybe ever, but it looks thoughtful, tactile, personal, and attractive, and you can customize the watch face, come on. I'll be interested to see how long it takes for them to drive down the bottom price point on the watch and what their strategy is for that, but I dunno if I'll be able to wait that long to get one.

I mean, I have been wanting a watch.

OTM, I've seen displays and shops for VERTU which make 'luxury phones'

http://www.vertu.com/en/

But afaict nobody actually used them (even in a status symbol place like HK) because it was a bad phone that happened to be covered in expensive calfskin and diamonds and gold

if a status-conscious billionaire wants a smart watch, is there any other credible choice of a 'lux' watch than the apple one?

sure but their goal should be to convince someone like me I'm missing out by not having a cool watch not impress that small segment of rich dudes who already love watches

Somebody should go undercover onto a watch enthusiast forum and get the reax

, Wednesday, 10 September 2014 16:14 (nine years ago) link

people will have to be able to try each size and strap combo on, they'll probably have to have associates bring out try-ons as if they're selling at a jewelry store, will be a powerful experience if Angela Ahrendts and co. design it right

Spirit of Match Game '76 (silby), Wednesday, 10 September 2014 16:14 (nine years ago) link

status conscious billionaire prob wear this thing for a week then go back to his million dollar swiss watch

lag∞n, Wednesday, 10 September 2014 16:14 (nine years ago) link

there's gotta be a watch subforum on fedoralounge

Spirit of Match Game '76 (silby), Wednesday, 10 September 2014 16:14 (nine years ago) link

yeah I mean at the truly high end you can get some pretty attractive complication watches in the $300,000-$1M+ range

Spirit of Match Game '76 (silby), Wednesday, 10 September 2014 16:14 (nine years ago) link

once saw a picture of a complication watch, felt desire to possess it, learned it cost as much as a house

ya im just saying as a watch its not a very good design, but maybe thats okay since its not really a watch

lag∞n, Wednesday, 10 September 2014 16:15 (nine years ago) link

watch enthusiasts have reason to dislike this right, since apple's goal is to kill non-apple watches dead

iatee, Wednesday, 10 September 2014 16:16 (nine years ago) link

friend of mines dad owns a million dollar watch plus a bunch of $100k+ ones, grody

lag∞n, Wednesday, 10 September 2014 16:16 (nine years ago) link

part of the problem might be that it's too cheap at $350, even poor people can afford it

they should make a U2 version for $5000

iatee, Wednesday, 10 September 2014 16:16 (nine years ago) link

I can now open the door and drive my car without taking my keys out of my pocket. I look forward to this new world of never reaching in my pockets.
