^^ JPM says that bit, the ldn sequence, is the closest to his own experience of the war.

It's cool because I kept expecting it to veer into some "fuck you rosbif you don't know what the war really means" territory but it doesn't, ultimately Gerbier comes across as detached from the possibility of pleasure or intimacy, at least I believed that until the scene where he thinks he's about to be executed and that one woman's face flashes back into his memory.

ya it is pretty good

just been chillin with the my dinner with andre discs. man, it is a different experience seeing it as a semi-jaded 30something than a wide-eyed teenager

A double bill of Melville’s Le Doulos and Le Deuxieme Souffle makes for an especially kickass weekend.

Carnival of Souls is one of my favorite Criterion editions. Restored film plus amazing extras including the director's early industrial commercial work and a zillion hand-tinted postcards of the salt palace.

Also (pretty sure it's Criterion) - Le Yeux Sans Visage (Eyes Without a Face). Great great movie, but there's an extra on there that's a short black & white documentary on French abbatoirs in the 50s. One of the most gruesome things I've ever seen.

Nate Carson, Thursday, 18 June 2009 19:24 (fifteen years ago) link

In the special features for the short, the director explains that it's in B&W because a color version would be horrific. that's some great deadpan. i hope.

is that le sang des betes, by georges franju? i finally saw this recently on google video, though i knew it was tucked away on some criterion something or other. it's pretty great. someone i know saw it on a double bill with eraserhead

-nb, finding the link i found that eyes without a face is franju; i've never got around to seeing it.

the site linked above looks good, by the way - excited to sit down with cria cuervos finally

The Auteurs looks like a pretty cool site...

I'm definitely a fan of Eyes Without a Face, great stuff. Haven't seen Le Doulos, but I actually just watched Le Deuxieme Souffle a few days ago, really good!

+1 <3 that movie so much. the franju doc on the slaughterhouses is %_% more than anything but the interviews on the disc are great

kind of the opposite! it's such a sad movie

s1ocki, Friday, 19 June 2009 03:09 (fifteen years ago) link

hey s1ocki have u started replacing w/ the blu rays? iyo r they "worth it"?

Lamp, Friday, 19 June 2009 03:21 (fifteen years ago) link

totally depends

i have some wicked gorgeous ones that i love, esp stuff shot with that format in mind like planet earth

some, like 400 blows, look good, but the source is so grainy to begin with you're not going to get a crisp image anyway... but the grain looks better if that makes sense, it compresses easier to a larger resolution...

it's hard to say cuz i've found quality on regular DVDs varies so wildly. in general, ya, they look nicer on a nice big tv. but at least half the time it would be hard to tell the difference.

s1ocki, Friday, 19 June 2009 03:40 (fifteen years ago) link

sounds like a scam (because I can't afford it).

Dr Morbius, Friday, 19 June 2009 03:44 (fifteen years ago) link

i cant really either but im @ my parents and they have some elaborate plasma rig w/ blu ray and ive got consumer goods envy of the worst sort

@ s1ocki okay i was really mostly curious about criterion specifically i mean their prints are obv gonna be among the best where possible and my friend al1se came over w/ a couple of criterion blu rays that looked incredible and im like fukk ~~~ last thing i need is 2 replace a few dozen of these u_u

ya like i said the only crit blu i have is 400 blows. i find their initial roll-out to be super weird. bottle rocket? i mean i love that movie but... not my first choice for blu. can't wait for the inevitable restored red shoes tho.

s1ocki, Friday, 19 June 2009 03:52 (fifteen years ago) link

yo lamp go rent planet earth on bluray if you want your eyes to bleed with joy

Fortunately, I'm not some image freak who knows what "artifacts" and "edge enhancement" are.

Dr Morbius, Friday, 19 June 2009 03:55 (fifteen years ago) link

my parents have planet earth thats what started all of this + my friend and i watched in the realm of the senses and lol bottle rocket

also two of my top 10 all times - wages of fear and the third man - are already blu ray which is also makin me desire. basically thinkin if i can get a decent price on a used ps3 then

neither am i! u can def go overboard on this stuff. but if you love the moving image i dont see why you shouldnt love it looking as best as it can!

i actually do know what artifacts are

The nuances of a film looking good vs great in different incarnations -- I just don't see them, usually.

Dr Morbius, Friday, 19 June 2009 04:16 (fifteen years ago) link

(just like i don't care about the "bad production" on Husker Du records)

horses for courses!

s1ocki, Friday, 19 June 2009 04:17 (fifteen years ago) link

bad production or whatever on a record isn't really a good analogy - a better one would be listening to it on tape vs cd or vinyl

Criterion's making their blu-rays region 1 only - pretty huge letdown now that most big companies seem to have decided to go the region-free route. I understand that probably Criterion just doesn't own the liscening for their stuff outside the US but still...sadface.

Dan, yes, I've seen Wise Blood. Cracked movie, one of Huston's very best. Profound sense of place. The Criterion looks fantastic but the extras were de trop and not that illuminating.

Seconding Wise Blood. It's an incredible film, Dourif's performance especially. And how can you resist a movie with Brad Dourif and Harry Dean Stanton?

Just spent money I shouldn't have on Withnail & I, the Monsters & Madmen box set, Haxan, Patriotism and Masculin Feminin.

Telephone thing, Wednesday, 15 July 2009 03:30 (fifteen years ago) link

That Cassavetes box is tempting. I don't know why. Most of those films aren't things I really feel like I want to sit through more than once. But it's a BOX! Eh.
