ya 5c was never in competition w the 5s it was the replacement for the year-old phone

lag∞n, Monday, 15 September 2014 19:38 (nine years ago) link

was hoping this year theyd have like 6, 6c, and 6x instead of the new, year old, and two year old phones cause itd be cool to have three diff new designs but i guess the upsizing ruined that plan

i'm pretty good with the whole "last year's phone being the discount phone" option, there's too many damn phones out there as it is

ehh in his breathless reveal that apple is taking on the watch industry itself he doesnt bother to mention that the watch market is much smaller than the smartphone and computer markets, also re the utility of the watch sans phone maybe hed spend $350 to have an ipod that takes voice memos on his wrist but i dont think most people would, there are some interesting ideas and factoids in that piece but its pretty incoherent on the whole, not really sure what question hes posing or what his conclusion is

imho as long as its tethered to yr phone its only real utility is not having to take yr phone out of yr pocket, which really having yr phone in yr pocket might actually be preferable but either way its not much of a hardship

if it does eventually get the internet its what a smartphone w a very tiny screen, apple just made the iphone screen bigger two out of the last three releases cause people want more screen

i cld see the watch selling pretty good at least at first but i doubt many people are gonna find it essential

The digital crown feels amazing. It didn’t actually control anything on-screen on the demo watches I handled last week, but it has the most amazing feel of any analog controller I’ve ever used. Lubricious (in the second sense, if not the first as well) is the word that springs to mind.

Jon Gruber is like, gross

, Wednesday, 17 September 2014 01:49 (nine years ago) link

his question as to whether apple has lost it and is in trouble is kinda interesting, imo they have lost it but are not in trouble, like they lost it in that they made a device thats not really useful, but its still a very well designed not that useful device, seeing as they already sell a number of very useful devices that demand a price premium based on superior design as long as their design chops stay sharp they shd be able to keep iphones and macs ahead of andriod and pcs even if theyve lost their sense in terms of what is good ideas for new products

lag∞n, Wednesday, 17 September 2014 01:56 (nine years ago) link

ew xp

lag∞n, Wednesday, 17 September 2014 01:57 (nine years ago) link

Yeah I mean at the end of the day they probably have sunk a couple billion, maybe in the double digits into this thing

That they're probably not gonna make back

But it's gonna have an indirect impact on their other devices (i.e. emphasis on sapphire production will eventually make its way into the iPhones and iPads)

And yeah they still sell a ton of iPhones, iPads, and Macbooks each year

Penetration among white collar professionals + wealthy college kids + sophisticated urbanites still remains very high

, Wednesday, 17 September 2014 02:00 (nine years ago) link

Also Apple wasn't without its missteps under Steve Jobs

Apple TV still sucks

Who remembers the

http://i.imgur.com/10ZzwDm.jpg

But don't think they've ever whiffed with a product quite as anticipated as the WATCH tho

, Wednesday, 17 September 2014 02:01 (nine years ago) link

the new Apple TV is gonna be a big deal, whenever it hits

Spirit of Match Game '76 (silby), Wednesday, 17 September 2014 02:03 (nine years ago) link

feel like phones being so huge is gonna cannibalize tablet sales, also feel like tablets were never that good or useful to begin with and will likely recede into a smaller market

lag∞n, Wednesday, 17 September 2014 02:03 (nine years ago) link

Don't think Apple TV is ever gonna surface

It's a chimera

The cable companies saw what iTunes did to the record industry

They ain't gonna touch it

Also feel like there's enough set top boxes out there that cable companies feel like they can just play them off each other

, Wednesday, 17 September 2014 02:05 (nine years ago) link

Apple's not shy about cannibalizing their own sales, probably nobody's gonna get both an iPhone 6+ and an iPad mini but if the iPad mini stays profitable as a segment and economical to keep the line running they'll probably stick around for a while, at least until Wireless carriers rationalize to the point where there's no need to distinguish between a Phone and anything else anymore.

Spirit of Match Game '76 (silby), Wednesday, 17 September 2014 02:07 (nine years ago) link

feel like appletv has always been a placeholder, obvs tv merging into the internet is like the biggest market shift ever and everyone wants a piece of it, problem for apple is all of the hurdles w making it work are business not technology or design issues, like they cant just make a better set top box and win, they have to do all the deals w the companies that have the content many of whom are the cable companies themselves who will be very resistant to apple taking their money

lag∞n, Wednesday, 17 September 2014 02:08 (nine years ago) link

xps the TV thing is gonna have a games component as well, no idea what Apple's "enter markets where we can make a difference" value proposition there is going to be exactly, but it's a big part of what they want to do with it.

Spirit of Match Game '76 (silby), Wednesday, 17 September 2014 02:09 (nine years ago) link

Appletv as good or better than the competition (roku, chromecast, etc,) unless you have a game console, then they're somewhat irrelevant

tbf the record companies were already getting killed by piracy which isnt as big a deal w tv

lag∞n, Wednesday, 17 September 2014 02:11 (nine years ago) link

Think cable companies are too regional for Apple to ever break them like they did with telecom, it'd be way too hard to try to coordinate some sort of universal offering across markets

, Wednesday, 17 September 2014 02:11 (nine years ago) link

I have an Appletv and it is rly easy to do stuff. But I have a tv, so I am most definitely not a youth

⌘-B (mh), Wednesday, 17 September 2014 02:12 (nine years ago) link

Apple's deal so far is breaking sports and shit. MLB streaming via apple is cool, but not for me.

⌘-B (mh), Wednesday, 17 September 2014 02:13 (nine years ago) link

AirPlay to AppleTV is awesome and worth the price alone

stet, Wednesday, 17 September 2014 02:13 (nine years ago) link

yeah the thing that cld force cable companies to the table is if the youths really just never get tvs

lag∞n, Wednesday, 17 September 2014 02:14 (nine years ago) link

I mean properties we'd expect from "the real" Apple TV: app store, SDK, a vidgam controller, Amazon and whatnot able to put their apps on there like on iPad…I guess Apple wants to build something that the proverbial (but not all that common) cord-cutter would be able to use to watch not just lots of things but for the right price closer to anything, time shifted/iClouded etc.

Spirit of Match Game '76 (silby), Wednesday, 17 September 2014 02:15 (nine years ago) link

I have a TV but I've never signed up for cable TV and I probably never will, a new building I'm eyeing to move to doesn't say anything about cable but advertises "HD antenna on the roof"

Spirit of Match Game '76 (silby), Wednesday, 17 September 2014 02:16 (nine years ago) link

also am a youth

Spirit of Match Game '76 (silby), Wednesday, 17 September 2014 02:16 (nine years ago) link

only thing cable really has is exclusives. if I can get USA/TBS/AMC or w/e via Hulu or buying seasons, all they have is sports, which are evaporating, and the HBO/Showtime lock-in deals where you can only stream w/cable sub

I have talked to a lot of people leeching off of the HBO Go subs of others

⌘-B (mh), Wednesday, 17 September 2014 02:17 (nine years ago) link

a big iPad you use on the TV with a game controller or 5-way buttons isn't rly enough to make a splashy new thing for so I guess it probably boils down to the rumored content dealmaking or something Magical and Revolutionary

Spirit of Match Game '76 (silby), Wednesday, 17 September 2014 02:18 (nine years ago) link

sports are p much alls i watch on tv, anything else if i care enough ill just pirate or netflix or w/e

lag∞n, Wednesday, 17 September 2014 02:19 (nine years ago) link

If they came out with a box that just had the entire back catalog of Antiques Roadshow on it I'd probably buy it

Spirit of Match Game '76 (silby), Wednesday, 17 September 2014 02:21 (nine years ago) link

you don't pirate sports lagún?

fedora, wherever it may find her (darraghmac), Wednesday, 17 September 2014 02:28 (nine years ago) link

oh man, my friend tried a non-retina tablet and it didn't suit needs. primary user is his three year old. I coached him on the angry birds last week. Works better if you shoot the birds toward the blocks.

i'm in the market for a macbook and am not considering retina at all, my eyes are powerful and unstoppable.

wish there was a cable package that was just sports channels + nba league pass. I resent tv so much. Get rid of commercials while we're at it.
