I think Tom beat me to the joke, but "Sugar Babe" by The Eggs is one of my favorite songs. Generally, I like 'em sunny side up or scrambled into my matzah brie if I'm feeling my roots.

Eggs good in all forms. Only bad egg scenario is if shell cracks whilst boiling; that's a bastard to clean up and gotta cook another egg. Fave eggs = cheese omelette with smoked salmon. In student years, we'd have egg fights at people's flats; eggs being "higher stakes" than water pistols. Much hilarity if - esp. with a long distance, lobbed throw - you popped someone unsuspecting on the head.

re: egg "abortions" - I once had a really disturbing dream about that. We bought eggs off this woman - she'd laid 'em herself - in the dream this was normal, humans lay eggs & you eat em - I cooked one of these eggs (boiled it) & knocked off the top & took a spoonful - the stuff is already in my mouth when I look down & see the egg is all full of BLOOD & stuff & the realisation hits me, OH SHIT I'M EATING A HUMAN ABORTION & I'm violently sick. I wake up convinced that I must have really vomited all over the place (it sure *felt* real) but I had not.
Anyone got one of those "interpret yr dreams" books?

Your dream means you will buy a Toyota Corrola

I'd probably vomit on the spot if I found some foetus thing in my egg. That would be the worst culinary experience ever, apart from finding a chicken brain in my KFC meal once. I can deal with eating animal stuff as long as it bears no resemblace to what it once was.

What would a chicken brain have to resemble? What DOES it resemble?

(There was a photo in the last-but-one issue of the Fortean Times, of a McN*gget which contained a whole golden-battered chicken- HEAD, inc. comb. The lucky little purchaser was offered a whole free Happy Meal in generous recompense, but had unaccountably, and very suddenly, lost her appetite...)

Well, it was small and brain-y. Mind you, it could have been anything, it was just declared a chicken brain at the time and I've never been all that keen on doing research to prove otherwise. So there.

What does Paul Rodgers have to do with eggs?

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Friday, 15 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Has anybody else ever cracked open an egg and the yolk was neon green? Actually luminescent light green?

Medium eggs are kinder eggs

I never thought about egg size in connection with animal welfare before.

This guy is representing free-range producers and I'm guessing that the largest sizes of egg can only be reliably produced through more intensive, battery-type farming, so it's a bit of jockeying for position with those guys and just boils down to marketing crap. The 'kinder' argument is totally bogus. I suppose it *is* kinder relatively speaking, but free-range chickens are still routinely debeaked with no pain relief, they're still bred to produce up to an egg a day (wild hens would ovulate only about 20 times a year) and they're all still shipped off to slaughter once the overall productivity of the flock falls. It's not really an industry where kindness is of much consequence.

Plus don't forget the baby male chicks.

If it's kinder relatively speaking, that's worth taking into account, isn't it?

Alba, Thursday, 12 March 2009 12:51 (fifteen years ago) link

I just made the best scrambled eggs I've ever made. Cracking them straight into the pan is definitely the way to go. Also absolutely shitloads of butter doesn't hurt.

Yeah, but you're talking about a little marketable ripple of kindness on an ocean of couldn't-care-less.
