idk tbph

the same person im referencing has had two appearances on the irish version of the various shows and at least one iirc on british version

all of these are lost to youtube so im guessing they had them taken down

but anyway eh if i'd to guess i suppose it was easier, when filming australian idol, to do it in the emigration lounge of a major london airport so that you could get all of the irish in one place before they fly over and tek er jebs

sorry for this, sunnysucc.

You can fire someone with no paperwork and no explanation?? How is that even legal? Or is that because you're in an at-will state (or because I've only worked for legit huge media companies who protect themselves with 100 layers of administration)?

UGH what a collective noun of profanities.

Orson Wellies (in orbit), Saturday, 25 October 2014 13:50 (nine years ago) link

It's really fishy. Yeah, it's an at-work state and the ball is completely in the employer's hand... But, there's always paperwork.

pplains, Saturday, 25 October 2014 14:14 (nine years ago) link

That write up for lateness was totally a feeble attempt to create a paper trail to justify the termination. I'm pretty sure they're going to fight you on unemployment benefits, too, sunny.

carl agatha, Saturday, 25 October 2014 14:21 (nine years ago) link

I mean it's blatantly obvious that they wanted to vacate or eliminate the position so these ding dongs decided to engage in some petty Game of Thrones shit to try to avoid paying unemployment.

I don't know if any of this is illegal though. Shitty on a human and a business decision level but that may be it.

(Not legal advice. Consult a local lawyer. Don't listen to me. I'm an idiot.)

carl agatha, Saturday, 25 October 2014 14:26 (nine years ago) link

My bosses, employment attorneys, say that at the end of the day ALL states are at-will. Some have implied contract laws and other partial protections, but they're weakly enforced and seriously limited by courts' interpretations. Basically in the U.S., unless you have a contract, you can be fired for no reason at all. Paperwork helps the company protect itself from charges of actual illegal firing (e.g., discriminating against people w/ ADA-covered emotional disorders) but it's not required. (Half-baked paralegal conclusions and second-hand lawyer opinions. Don't listen to me. I'm an idiot.)

Anyway I'm sorry, sunny. That's shit. I hope you quickly get a better situation so you can enjoy being free of those people.

Je55e, Saturday, 25 October 2014 17:10 (nine years ago) link

hope you stole some office supplies on the way out

j., Saturday, 25 October 2014 17:13 (nine years ago) link

Maybe you do want to consult an attorney? Especially if they fight your unemployment benefits. nela.org is a good place to start. (I'll butt out now.)

Je55e, Saturday, 25 October 2014 17:16 (nine years ago) link

"do you have emotional problems" reminds me of a lawsuit I helped with where a boss said to an absent-minded employee (who had majorly fucked up), "What do you have Alzheimers?" She did not, but she quit, saying she was forced out, and she sued for disability discrimination.

difficult-difficult lemon-difficult (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 25 October 2014 18:11 (nine years ago) link

Hope there's no way they can prejudice other firms from hiring you. This does sound shit.
i.e. Hope this can only extend to what sounds like a majorly unfair dismissal without leaving other stains on your work record. Or is that dismissal enough of a stain in itself?

Stevolende, Saturday, 25 October 2014 18:20 (nine years ago) link

that is such utter horseshit – i'm furious on your behalf, SS.

AKA Thermo Thinwall (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Saturday, 25 October 2014 18:43 (nine years ago) link

Wow, no explanation. I'm sorry to hear that. That is really unprofessional. I take it they didn't make you sign a gag order like I had to when I got fired?

That sucks. You're not alone. At least it was a stupid firing so you don't have to feel bad.

Threat Assessment Division (I M Losted), Saturday, 25 October 2014 19:01 (nine years ago) link

THIS MAKES ME SO MAAAAAD!!! I wonder if you can passive-aggressively e-mail that peed shit to some co-workers and make a thing blow up?

Also yeah they prob are going to fight unemployment but there is like NO WAY they can win, right IANALs?

Belami Young (Stevie D(eux)), Saturday, 25 October 2014 22:05 (nine years ago) link

Each state runs it's own unemployment show. They wouldn't win in Illinois but I really can't say about Arkansas.

OMG, just heard from a former co-worker that my old office mates are not allowed to use iTunes anymore. It seems someone had a bunch of irreverent stuff like punk, heavy metal, Marilyn Manson, and the South Park soundtrack. They have a new Director, I guess she is very conservative and feels personally mocked and offended by the irreverence. Never mind that the animation department uses stuff like metal music or South Park.

Boss: Ugh. Don't these idiots in Russia and Boobekistan need to be working their fucking jobs instead of playing games like this? Maybe their countries wouldn't be such a mess if they spent more time working.
(Same kind of thing she says about telemarketers and spammers.)

Je55e, Thursday, 13 November 2014 19:36 (nine years ago) link

Also: Ugh. Why would I care if the NSA is listening to me tell my friend Barbara what I'm fixing for dinner?
Other boss: B/c privacy is a fundamental right, whether you're doing wrong or not?
Her: I know, I know -- remember who's the aging anti-establishment hippie around here [her]. Anyway, what do they think? They're gonna catch the next Unabomber listening to my cell phone? Come on.

Her, on the phone to the new webhosting company: That email address is dead and I can't log onto it. I don't understand why you can't just send the information to my work email like I've been asking you to? What is my favorite board game? I don't know..... Scrabble? Pictionary? I don't remember! Why all this cloak and dagger stuff with secret words? Uh-huh... OK.... yes... Ugh OK...... is it Scrabble?

Pretty convinced that the vast majority of bosses I've known have had, like, one very specific portion of their brain that works well enough to have gotten them into their position and that's otherwise surrounded by a mass of thoroughly necrotized tissue.

Yesterday she was saying how she *doesn't get* why demographic profiling at airports is a bad thing when it's obvious that a little old lady with a poodle isn't Mohammed Atta or whatever. But the thing is.... she honestly DIDN'T GET IT. When I told her about an Indian friend being unfairly profiled for being brown and having an accent, she said, "Oh! OK, see I can see why racial profiling upsets people then!"

Lawyers can get tunnel vision in their specialty - like many other professionals, I am guessing. And that is bad b/c a lot of cases cross over into various areas of the law, which deserve at least a quick exploration or some curiosity.

This boss definitely gives me agita sometimes and I need to get a new job for that and other reasons, but the biggest problem is that this is such a small office that we get WAY too much exposure to each other. If I worked for or with her at a bigger firm with more staff, I think she would drive me less crazy (though honestly I'm often more entertained than upset by her weirdness).

She only goes to web addresses via
a) Her "bookmarks," which are the addresses in the drop-down list of frequently-visited sites (she was frantic when the IT contractor repaired her computer and "deleted all [her] bookmarks!")

b) Google search, e.g., for "fedex.com" rather than typing "fedex.com" into the URL hole. So when she found "mysbcglobal.com" she didn't realize it was a fake and was clicking around trying to log into her sbc email (which is now AT&T/Yahoo anyway).

He looked exactly like Chief Justice John Roberts.

I was trying to wire money to a bank in Australia called St. George. He wanted to know what the address was.

I said, probably something like StGeorge.com.au, and he said no, the physical address.

This would be like someone asking you what the street address for MasterCard is.

we're finally at year-end crunch time here, and my boss went to HR to request overtime for us. answer: "no. we think your team has had too much turbulence this year to redline them now."

so our reward for surviving the tumult of the year is that now we have to do the same work without the necessary time made available for us.

Boss' optometrist office calls and I put them on hold tell her. Boss buzzes back to my desk, "They're probably calling to confirm my appointment."

"....Okay, so you want me to talk to them?"

"Yes, I'm sure they're just calling to confirm my appointment this week -- which reminds me, can you drive me there on Friday?"
