apparently I was the one person in Seattle who had never heard of Paseo also the reason they shut down was cause of some really gross, exploitative, racist labor law violations and they can go fuck themselves

There's a labor suit pending against Paseo's owner, but we don't know why they closed. Whenever a cash-only business closes, tax issues are a pretty safe bet.

Paseo's always seemed like a case study in how to make an end to end miserable dining experience. Insane lines, long waits, rude staff, botched orders, cash only, minimal seating, and food so sloppy you end up with a lapful of caramelized onions and mayonnaise by the time you're two bites into your sandwich.

The Stranger is getting really bad about posting their poorly researched, overly emotional snap takes on every local news situation.

We're celebrating the legacy of Seattle's early music and comix on Saturday, November 29 as Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery hosts the book launch party for Sub Pop USA: The Subterranean Music Anthology, 1980 -1988. The book documents the formative years of Bruce Pavitt's fiercely independent fanzine, cassette label and music column. Fantagraphics curator Larry Reid was a contributor to the fanzine (under the pseudonym Lewy Louie). Bookstore staffer Russ Battaglia contributed graphics and photos to the zine, which were graced with covers by Lynda Barry and Charles Burns. It was amazing to see the almost immediate infleunce Pavitt's modest enterprise had on pop music. To those close to him, it came as no surprise that within a decade, Sub Pop would impact popular culture on a global scale.

The book includes essays by Reid, Charles R. Cross, Ann Powers, Gerard Cosley, and Calvin Johnson, founder of K Records and early Sub Pop fanzine collaborator. Johnson will perform music at the party, which is the first time he'll play Fantagraphics since Beat Happening rocked our wild warehouse party in 1994 (attended by newly anointed princes of punk, Nirvana). Many contributors to the old zine and new book will be at the November 29 reception from 6:00 to 8:00 PM - a great way to end Small Business Saturday.

Also, RIP Harvard Exit and Varsity Theater. Pretty bummed about Harvard Exit; didn't get to see too many films there, but it was always such a pleasant experience, and what a venue! Guessing it will become an upscale cocktail bar by March.

Hello west side of the state -

I'm going to seattle in a couple of weeks, first time with a four month old baby. Any recommendations for places to eat or get beers that are kid-friendly? Washington seems to go by the the presence of the seemingly arbitrary railing near the bar that determines if minors can be in the establishment or not.

Feel free to suggest places that you might hate for the very reason that asshole yuppie parents bring their kids there, that kind of thing. Staying on Capitol Hill but am open to anywhere location wise.

Lost Lake is a diner / cafe / pub and should be workable for the kid, beers aren't necessarily great. Elysian's brewpub does have great beers and is open and clean and full of light, and mostly a table-service restaurant.

For daytime beer sampling without food (food trucks turn up after office hours), Chuck's Hop Shop a stroll away in the Central District is (in interior design) a combo beer supermarket and school lunchroom, with about 50 rotating taps and a wooden balcony to sip in the sun.

If the kid was 4 years, you could go to the Comet Tavern and play skee-ball or Doctor Who pinball. You probably still could, obv.

The Canterbury, Madrona, and Montlake Ale Houses are all ages before 9 pm. Haven't been to any in awhile though so can't vouch for them. The Madrona one used to be absolutely packed with families when we lived by it. Decent enough food. The German beer hall on 12th that used by called VonTrapp's but now is called Rhein Haus (due to dodging the litigation bullet from the Sound of Music Von Trapp family) is totally family friendly, massive and loud. Has bocce courts and okay food.

Chuck's Hop Shop Central and Fremont Brewing are kid friendly beer/foodish spots.

Those of us in the neighborhood call ReinHaus the Rape Bar. Really fratty vibe on weekends, but could be good if you go early enough. Elysian on Pike is probably your safest bet.

Populuxe Brewing in Fremont/Ballard is kid friendly and mostly outdoors, it's great when the weather's like this.

If you go to the Rhein Haus and the kid falls asleep, lock it in the car with the window cracked and have a couple of cocktails next door at Canon, ranked as sixth best bar in the world last year.

(one ahead of the Baxter Inn in Sydney. we got four on the list of fifty, though)

outdoors in Fremont/Ballard in nice weather also sounds good, and probably v accessible by bus for tipsy travel back. if you like burgers line your stomach at Uneeda Burger first?

Thanks everyone - I've been to Elysian and the Canterbury but it's been ages, and I thought Canon looked familiar on street view and realized it's where Lark used to be which I'd been to a couple times. I've heard other people mention the Hop Shop and it isn't too far from where we're staying, though we'll probably end up roaming Ballard at some point.

Anybody know if the Pine Box lets kids in? I ate at Kedai Makan and then had beers there last time I was in Seattle and would like to repeat that.

Canon is next door to where Lark used to be. Canterbury has closed and reopened yuppier.

Pine Box might let kids in in the afternoon, or early on a weekday.

Light rail has been around for, like, 6 years! We just got another 5 miles and 2 stops added. Another 100 miles of track and we'll be on par with...every other major city, half a century ago.

Pretty common to have strong storms like these in November and December. October is a bit early, but not unheard of. It's just nasty when you lose power and there are fallen trees all over, but it's not like these are hurricanes or anything.
