Anyone catch Marco Polo on Netflix yet? Clearly going for the Game of Thrones boobs & battles formula - but it feels like it might be an OK timewaster for December based on the first couple of episodes.

The premise of the series made me uncomfortable and there's this too http://www.villagevoice.com/2014-12-10/film/marco-polo-netflix/

Brian Brown from the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County has found a phorid that beheads ants in an entirely new way.Brown is an authority on phorids and especially the ant-decapitating, bee-killing varieties. He has discovered around 500 species of them. In the field, he lures them in by crushing ants and other insects with forceps, and watching what arrives. Some phorids feed directly off the injured insects. Others lay their eggs inside. But one species, Dohrniphora longirostrata, did something different.

Because of general cultural momentum, I read the first book and started the second. 1) It's amazing how much the show sticks to (at least) the first book and much of the second, so far. 2) I really respect GRRM's world building. 3) GRRM is a pretty terrible writer, he said, wiping the grease from his beard as the great Horn of Aroo sounded. "Aroooooooooo," went the horn. Pyp the Dwarf was taken aback. Was that indeed the Horn o Aroo? "Aroooooooooooooooooooo," went the Horn again. Yes, thought Pyp, there could be no mistaking it. Pyp stood on his two wobbly legs, weak from mead but misshapen from birth, and faced his army of sellswords. "Tonight," he began, his voice steadily rising, greatly disproportionate to his short stature, "we ride ... to reclaim what is ours!" The sellswords and barbarians, also wiping grease from their beards, responded with a mighty clash of weapons, ringing out in the night like the cry of a great Jungle Beast, which no man has ever seen south of the Wall but which every child knows from their nightmares. To Pyp it sounded like so much gold being spilled out, the cost of procuring an army on such short notice. But if there's anything a sellsword prizes more than weapons, it's gold, and anyone able to disperse such bounty to these kingdom-free men understood too well the dangers of men who fight not for honor but for money.
And so on.
