Is Jeb Bush Too Liberal To Win The Republican Nomination In 2016?

lol at Paul's disparity between statements and voting record

Clay, Tuesday, 16 December 2014 20:30 (nine years ago) link

interesting, in that chart, that rand paul's public issue statements are rated as the 3rd least conservative, and his public voting record as the most conservative by far.

xpost yep

And Santorum's public statement bark outweighing his voting record bite. Interesting chart.

I have no objection to warren being president, but this doesn't change the fact that, without any leverage over congress, she'd be a reduced to a placeholder. just being president doesn't ensure you can accomplish much, unless you can command enough votes in congress.

in 2016 it would not surprise me

re: chart. what amuses me most is the scale of 0 - 100. if Christie rates a zero on that scale on any category, it lacks a certain granularity at the low end.

oh no! must be the season of the rich (Aimless), Tuesday, 16 December 2014 20:48 (nine years ago) link

only way progressives can have sway over candidates is to pump money into causes and energy into legislators' call centers.

paul is legit terrifying. i wonder how much of the millennial vote he could cut into by being pro-pot and rhetorically (though not legislatively) anti-war

prolego, Tuesday, 16 December 2014 20:52 (nine years ago) link

he won't come out as pro-pot

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 16 December 2014 20:53 (nine years ago) link

no presidential candidate is going to do that tbh

Ron Paul sponsored a legalization bill in the House (along w Barney Frank). then when he ran for President he said legalization should be up to the states. fancy that.

guys, the first woman president is likely to be someone like the NRA Barbie who just won that Iowa senate seat

Everyone hates wall street though. And her message is all on that postwar nostalgia/rising middle class kick my radical friends hate but America loves. Funding might become less of an issue now that people spend more time on social media than they do watching tv. I know this has not happened YET...

Treeship, Tuesday, 16 December 2014 21:08 (nine years ago) link

Everyone hates wall street though

lol except for the people in power that decide elections

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 16 December 2014 21:10 (nine years ago) link

Treeship, Tuesday, 16 December 2014 21:15 (nine years ago) link

Let's just agree that they're all horrible.

My Name Is You (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 16 December 2014 21:18 (nine years ago) link

idk how many votes a president could get by being explicitly pro-pot but it seems like you'd gain more votes than you'd lose (from millennials, from boomers, from big pot money, etc) so i gotta figure it's coming sooner than later.

Mordy, Tuesday, 16 December 2014 21:19 (nine years ago) link

nah, all a candidate has to do is blow some racial dogwhistle shit about black and brown people high on drugs and no longer locked up in our wonderful prison system and there ya go, pro-pot candidate is damaged goods

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 16 December 2014 21:23 (nine years ago) link

ie it's ok for most of America if white people with "medical needs" get away w it, but full-blown legalization means fewer non-white people in jail, can't have that

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 16 December 2014 21:24 (nine years ago) link

you have a greater chance at alienating old folks than getting stoners to go door to door for you, even if the majority of the country is for it it's gonna be a long time before any politician can embrace the issue

NBA Injury Report ‏@NBAInjuryR3port -- Jason Terry (getting tattoo that says "Jeb Bush: 45th President of the United States") will not play tonight.

write it in a book; president jeb is happening.

Daniel, Esq 2, Tuesday, 16 December 2014 21:26 (nine years ago) link

it's going to be like gay marriage - it's going to happen at the state level first, which will spur legal challenges, which will slowly percolate up to the federal level. Perhaps relevant to note that we have never had a presidential candidate that supported gay marriage btw.

xp

I stand by my claim that Cruz both looks and sounds like too much of a bitch to win a national election. Positions be damned. American voters are fickle and superficial as fuck.

Yeah, in the George W. "would be a good guy to have a beer with" category, NOBODY wants to have a beer with Ted Cruz.

2016 prediction: winner of presidential race will be relative of previous president; win announced on TV by relative of previous TV anchor

j., Tuesday, 16 December 2014 22:41 (nine years ago) link

Ted Cruz strikes me as the type of politician whose following is mainly people who aren't stupid, but who hated school and struggled with it, who are basically ignorant about anything beyond their own experiences. They are both insecure and extremely resentful about that. They love Ted Cruz because he has all sorts of really-smart-person credentials and he thinks just like they do so his existence is hugely validating for them. You can travel pretty far on that ticket, but not to a presidency.
