i'm just as skeptical of the "norse" theory as the FBI one.

Also in a subtle way satirizes apolitical love of bling, when Franco is walking around Un's car collection to a Lil Jon soundtrack.

not sure about how well he does dramatically, but as a comedic actor, he is pretty terrible. way too self aware and trying to show he is clever all the time. i couldnt watch all of pineapple express because of how awful he was.

and now he's in a 3D Herzog film.
― touch of a love-starved cobra (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 11 February 2015 13:19 (nine years ago) link
it makes sense once you realise
(1) robert pattinson is in it as a serious actor
(2) australian actress nicole kidman is playing a british role
(3) british actress naomi watts dropped out of it
(4) british actor jude law is being replaced by a young up-and-coming american actor that goes by the name of james franco or whatever
and (5) herzog is past his prime
thus: this film is garbage
― F♯ A♯ (∞), Wednesday, 11 February 2015 18:54 (nine years ago) link
Robert Pattinson is a credible actor, so i dismiss you.

still like modern herzog but he is kind of just having a laugh these days so i imagine franco will be perfect

i agree with this generally (he's gotten more painfully unfunny over the years, especially with Spring Breakers imo) but The Interview surprised me, prob his funniest performance since Freaks & Geeks.

i need to check if that 'double negative' device is in finkles book, ima bet no and that instead it is the most spoonfeed the audience garbage bs screenwriting technique
i do actually like jonah hill mostly but he they needed a real actor for his part, badly

http://www.salon.com/2015/05/07/james_francos_mcdonalds_op_ed_is_light_airy_and_full_of_privileged_sht/
have to admit i lol'd at "I generally like James Franco. He is funny, he’s a good actor, he wants to live an interesting life. But he is so, so dumb. Like, really dumb. Franco’s essay shows an utter lack of comprehension of any issues outside of the Palo Alto-Los Angeles tunnel in which he grew up. It is, like much of Franco’s previous non-acting work, light, and airy, and privileged bullshit."
I don't mean to generalise too much, but look at who wrote this. I can totally picture her being a Franco fan. And now these young women are trying to articulate what they, like, don't like about Jamie omigod..."he is sooo dumbbb"

describing a hamburger as "airy" is so weird. it's like, floppy and greasy and stuff. maybe he took the patty out and just ate the bun?
― he quipped with heat (amateurist), Wednesday, 13 May 2015 03:04 (nine years ago) link
and i guess mcdonalds patties are not as heavy as others, but a burger patty is a pretty dense thing. not "airy" by any means.

i think "so dumb" is p accurate tbh
― ♛ LIL UNIT ♛ (thomp), Wednesday, 13 May 2015 03:12 (nine years ago) link
i mean it's james franco! in terms of 'people re whom it would not be a waste of time to set out my problems with their worldview in depth' he falls somewhere pretty near the bottom, nestled between bret easton ellis and hitler
― ♛ LIL UNIT ♛ (thomp), Wednesday, 13 May 2015 03:15 (nine years ago) link
Salon article's probably dumber than anything Franco's done.
― circa1916, Wednesday, 13 May 2015 03:30 (nine years ago) link
To me airy implies the lack of burger in the burger patty. McD's burgers always seem like little hockey pucks that are mostly bread.

'the interview' did this thing that happens a lot with big budget comedies where it's like they're afraid the audience will be confused and unhappy if the movie stays silly and funny all the way through so they start grinding everything to a halt for joke-free dramatic and action sequences by the third act.

yea otm, I think this is unavoidable thoalso this type of movie needs to really nail its montages, not have them be overlong, etc and it did that v well so kudosoverall it was better than I expectedthe best stuff is in the first half, and lots of it is franco's expressions & reaction shots, so great
― johnny crunch, Wednesday, 24 June 2015 18:35 (nine years ago) link
oh man, i hate to admit it but i really enjoyed The Interview. probably Franco's best performance ever. Randall Park actually being really funny helped a lot

Inviting Wisseau on stage and then stiff arming him when he lunged for the mic was a weird, uncomfortable moment.
― Moodles, Monday, 8 January 2018 17:46 (six years ago) link

oh come on, I can't even tell if you guys are joking. He made the movie, he stars in the movie. Since when does the real life subject get to do the acceptance speech? James knows probably better than anyone that if he gave Tommy the mic he was not getting it back.
― Josh in Chicago, Monday, 8 January 2018 18:12 (six years ago) link

― Josh in Chicago, Monday, 8 January 2018 18:42 (six years ago) link
It definitely seemed like a rude and obnoxious way to respond to a silly situation, especially since without Wisseau there would be no trophy.
Also OL, I'm maybe being oversensitive, but your responses come across as fairly condescending for no particular reason. I was making a fairly bland observation about that moment. I wasn't under any illusion that I was noting anything particularly deep. OTOH, I was well aware of the dynamic at play, but felt it was obvious enough not to state explicitly.

James Franco accepted the Golden Globe for Best Actor, Musical or Comedy on Sunday night with a “Time’s Up” pin, which signifies support for the fight against sexual misconduct in Hollywood, on his black suit. But some 2018 Golden Globes viewers were upset to see Franco wearing the pin, saying they don’t believe The Disaster Artist actor has treated women with respect in the past....Other Golden Globes viewers took to Twitter to criticize Franco for his alleged treatment of women in the past, including two women who made specific accusations against the actor. Some of the tweets focused on a 2014 incident in which Franco allegedly hit on a 17-year-old girl on Instagram.

everyone in town knows that james franco is a creep and that stories about his behavior were about to break. the hollywood foreign press knew it too but gave him an award anyway.— Katy Stoll (@katystoll) January 8, 2018

No condescension intended to you, Moodles, just a comment on Franco's apparent obliviousness wrt the power dynamic. Everything surrounding this movie has the uncomfortable whiff of an Improv Everywhere performance, and Franco trotting Wiseau out like a freak for everyone to ogle without allowing him a moment of agency was pretty gross. Particularly compounded with Franco standing in front of Wiseau and affecting Wiseau's voice to tell Wiseau's story.
― Bobby Buttrock (Old Lunch), Monday, 8 January 2018 19:29 (six years ago) link
Just for entertainment's sake. You don't put Tommy Wiseau onstage in front of 19 million viewers and not let him speak.
― jmm, Monday, 8 January 2018 19:44 (six years ago) link
xp
Fair enough
― Moodles, Monday, 8 January 2018 19:46 (six years ago) link
no shit. so weird inviting a guy on stage, not letting him take the mic, and then immediately imitating his voice
think Franco legit did a great job with this movie but come on, let Tommy have his moment. Franco's been up there enough. an unfiltered Tommy Wiseau on stage is one of the few things that would've made me want to watch the Golden Globes

Are there allegations against him other than that he hit on a 17-year-old (i.e. legal, although too young for a 30-something to be hitting on) girl?
