The fantasy sports aspect of the League is as inconsequential as its LA-as-Chicago setting, or the fact that some characters have kids, somewhere, sometimes. It's mostly the people ripping on each other, and given the level of the comedians usually pays off at least a few times per episode.

Watched and liked this first new BC. It captures being young and in New York so well that my wife and I were basically, like, fuck New York, even if we were young that place sucks, how does anyone live there?

But yeah, Review was so fucked up and dark that my wife basically gonged it outright and told me to watch it on my own time.

i think i mentioned this but i watched all of review in one night and by the end i was just so so sad

apparently Review's second season barely got picked up, and only after a significant budget decrease, so, uh, tell yr friends to watch it when it comes back

I just can't really fathom taking it seriously, it's such a farce...? Unless you were really sad because you thought it was terrible and a waste of your time or something.

i guess even as a farce i was able to empathize on some level w/ macneil completely destroying his life and everything that made him happy, and the suffering he felt when it happened. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

That is totally the magic of Andy Daly. It doesn't matter how fucking stupid and ridiculous and evil any character he plays is -- when he injects a little bit of sadness into the character I always buy it. see also the guy from Eastbound & Down. no matter how much ridiculousness they buried that character in he was still as balievable as any of the characters they /tried/ to make empathetic.

i don't want to say underrated bc i feel everyone probably has the same opinion on andy daly, but yeah. a legit top 5 living comedic actor.

I agree Daly's great, love him in E&D etc. But yeah I don't feel emotionally invested in Forrest MacNeil, esp because all of his problems stem from his largely unacknowledged pathology (ie the need to be on TV)

That and an obsession with the weird rules he set out for himself that he feels the need to follow absolutely.

that's part of what makes me sad! i think it's a dramatization of the way humans destroy their lives by following weird rules that they make up for themselves, and only realize too late that it was never worth it

yeah so many people go for the easy "let's make this guy a sharklike mindless psychopath and let the humour come from there" angle when an angle like that is so much more a) funnier and b) true and c) tragic

Ouch, the second episode of season 2 is pretty early for a crap episode. Too much Bevers, Ilana kinda annoying. Abbi and trainer guy were fine I guess, but my wife and I didn't catch any laughs. And if we did laugh, we don't remember doing so, which is a different problem. Oh well. These two are pretty funny, they'll bounce back, and they get points for not having Bevers walk in on Abbi when she was dancing naked.

most lol bits were both Bevers pratfalls (collapsing on the treadmill and the credits bit about keeping him awakw) tbh

What does it say when the highlight of a Broad City ep is Bevers slapstick?

i thought e2 was better than e1 personally. one of my favourite parts of the show is the depictions of them at work. had slight reservations at first but now im 100% full back on-board. also bevers is hilarious

idk bevers is the hackiest thing abt this show, def feels like a caricature out of a much lesser work imo but to each his own i guess

he's v much the trad sitcom annoying/wacky neighbor

it's a familiar role but there's a surrealness to how awful he is that makes him more appreciable as an archetype. the same actor does a slightly more grounded variation of the theme on marry me and i found it more tiresome there.

that line about being the fastest one at sucking his own dick at summer camp in the hurricane episode cracked me up

Hurricane episode one of the few - only? - where their insufferable friends (Hannibal aside) hold their own. Bevers is so stupid. Unless he's supposed to be a walking parody of fart joke, in which case ... he's still stupid. The relationship between Ilana and Abbi is the heart of the show, and the farther they veer from that focus, the less satisfying it is. Last season's wedding episode being some sort of early nadir.

Have we met Abbi's roommate yet? I assume that is supposed to be a big reveal at some point. Lena Dunham?

Bevers seems more like "let's have Gemberling on this show" than "this character is a delightful counterpoint/contrast to our tale of friendship". Haven't watched any of this season yet though.

bevers just seems like a lazy ripoff of galifinakis in the hangover imo. still funny sometimes though, except the lol at the fatty jokes.
