I only got to watch the first 5 minutes of this but HOLY SHIT at those 5 minutes. love Susie Essman forever

Οὖτις, Thursday, 5 February 2015 20:50 (nine years ago) link

this show is charming and often quite funny, but if these characters were real, i'd probably hate them :(

I dunno. (amateurist), Thursday, 5 February 2015 23:28 (nine years ago) link

loved bob balaban

I dunno. (amateurist), Thursday, 5 February 2015 23:28 (nine years ago) link

I don't think hating characters is an obstacle to enjoying a show. The only close to consistently likable character on It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia is Charlie, still love that show.

pelvic slang (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Friday, 6 February 2015 00:34 (nine years ago) link

haha yeah Charlie is v lovable

agree the girls would be p irritating in real life, but so would most people on TV

Οὖτις, Friday, 6 February 2015 00:35 (nine years ago) link

oh, i didn't mean to imply a negative assessment of the show, which i like. i think one of the most interesting things about the show is how they play versions of themselves, but notably not particularly witty or mature versions. the wit of the show is mostly ironic, that is, at the characters' expense, as in when ilana (sp?) riffs on "rape culture" in increasingly bizarre ways.

i think if the show took a few steps in the direction of melodrama, i'd abandon it. that it seems pretty focused on yuks is its saving grace.

I dunno. (amateurist), Friday, 6 February 2015 01:06 (nine years ago) link

actually i guess they do allow ilana (alana?) flashes of genuine wit, but they usually undercut that with something else.

I dunno. (amateurist), Friday, 6 February 2015 01:06 (nine years ago) link

yeah they've said that the show is about them making fun of their younger selves

flopson, Friday, 6 February 2015 01:25 (nine years ago) link

i personally like the characters a lot. people on ilx always dislike characters of tv shows or movies lol. but it's obviously true that they're not very mature, especially ilana.

flopson, Friday, 6 February 2015 01:36 (nine years ago) link

I think the show is very smart dumb, which hits the sweet spot (like Workaholics did early on).

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 6 February 2015 01:42 (nine years ago) link

rewatched Workaholics recently w/ my gf who's never seen it. warned her that it gets spotty after season one, but after we were done we sort've agreed that outside of a stray episode here or there it really didn't outright suck until season 4.

casual male (will), Friday, 6 February 2015 03:34 (nine years ago) link

BC is awes. only bum ep was maybe the one where they're trying to get to the wedding? idk

casual male (will), Friday, 6 February 2015 03:35 (nine years ago) link

But that one had a great line where they were riding hubway bikes and the gay friend stole one and was like, "OMG I thought we were all stealing bikes now!". I realize that one great line does not make an episode but that did kill me.

Watched the new one last night. SO so so good. Sussie Essman is the greatest and holy shit was she ever perfect as I's mom. There couldn't have been a better choice for that role.

I really hated Ilana's character at first but she's grown on me even and I find Abby endearing. Guys, I really love this show.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Friday, 6 February 2015 13:12 (nine years ago) link

Great episode. This is how you do it, bring in guests but never forget that the story is about Abbi and Ilana.

I like that this takes place in the not quite real world, which makes their obnoxious behavior more tolerable. They're funny, because everyone else is insane, too. Even Lincoln, the closest this comes to a straight man, is a nut. Again, part of how this perfectly captures NYC c. now: you have to be crazy.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 6 February 2015 14:47 (nine years ago) link

"now"?

I dunno. (amateurist), Friday, 6 February 2015 15:21 (nine years ago) link

Oh, it's always been bad, but there's a certain millennial + money + meandering vibe that seems very of the now.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 6 February 2015 15:25 (nine years ago) link

My cousin took me to her personal bagman once in Beijing. I was dying

So good.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Friday, 13 February 2015 13:51 (nine years ago) link

You think it's gonna be another "they get into all kinds of wacky mixups!" thing, and then BAM there's Val.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Friday, 13 February 2015 14:47 (nine years ago) link

and you (I) think the whole Val thing is some drunken fever dream but no...it seems like they're playing it straight. What a world they're inventing.

Loved the trainer and his party and friends as well. Cliff Bars for guys, Luna Bars for girls!

dan selzer, Friday, 13 February 2015 15:39 (nine years ago) link

omg i started rewatching season 2 and in the first ep somebody calls out val to abby on the subway!

Holy crap, that rules.

And I never noticed the people eating the huge sub. I don't know why, but eating a massive sandwich on the subway sounds really appealing.

the plight of y0landa (forksclovetofu), Friday, 13 February 2015 17:01 (nine years ago) link

This is my current favorite show. So funny, and not all mean-spirited/hostile toward the leads...

schwantz, Friday, 13 February 2015 18:03 (nine years ago) link

You know how in sitcoms and stuff there are like fake auctions to win dates with celebs and stuff (maybe this actually happens irl but I don't think it does). I want to win a friend date with A & I. Is that weird? That's probably really weird.

, Sunday, 15 February 2015 20:54 (nine years ago) link

Omg you're right!

I rewatched the mail ep last night and was dying at "Garol" all over again.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Monday, 16 February 2015 13:11 (nine years ago) link

What a genius ep. I always had this pet theory that cell phones killed New York, because there are always dozens of things going on any given night, anyway, but suddenly people had the means to look for something better as soon as they got where they were going. Like, "great party, what else is going on?" This ep pushed that to the perfect FOMO extreme. Funny, well-acted, Lincoln (loved the cab exit) and gym guy and no Bevers.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 17 February 2015 03:45 (nine years ago) link

A writer on the Irish Independent called this show "darkly humorous" uhh what?

aw <3 kyp malone i should give that new record another chance

resulting post (rogermexico.), Friday, 20 February 2015 06:04 (nine years ago) link

Loved this ep, too. Great use of secondary characters that did not distract from the central pair of stars, especially given dog wedding had every potential to be as obnoxious as wedding episode last season. Cracked up at the endless rainbow flag from the bag and also Abbi kicking the ball back with a rollerblade on and predictably but hilariously taking a spill. Also, heartened by the lack of a blurred nudity gag.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 20 February 2015 13:01 (nine years ago) link

abby trying to pinch/shift the physical photos was a good gag

johnny crunch, Friday, 20 February 2015 14:56 (nine years ago) link

i liked the ribbon gag so much i was hopnig she'd find another one

king of ilx's ice hockey/soccer venn intersection (Will M.), Friday, 20 February 2015 15:09 (nine years ago) link

I hoped the ribbon gag would be endless, like Steve Martin pouring coffee in Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid, but it was perfect as it was.
