I think you have to have done a certain mission to trigger gang wars, I forget. If your map's colour coded green, purple and yellow according to territory you've done it. You usually get body armour or a health pickup after each wave so they're not that hard. If you look where the enemy guys are on the radar you can get ready to target them with a good weapon and shoot them before they even get near you.

I did the low rider race in one attempt, I was very relieved. The last few plot missions before the second city are pretty cool. I felt really disorientated and isolated after getting dumped in the middle of nowhere (during the first mission there I was getting chased by loads of police and FBI in a big police car so I rolled it off Mt. Chilliad, survived with an insane stunt bonus and then offroaded through a bunch of trees with helicopters overhead to drop the photos off at the last second, it were mad good). Now I have a nice house on a big road that allows me to shoot people until I have lots of stars then nip back in and put some sunglasses on to lose the wanted rating.

i just discovered that you can actully attach the truck trailers to the truck cabs, how very clever.

I made a break for it on the third island, its very colourful with its neon lights it looks like Vice City. I managed to evade the cops whilst listening to "Free Bird". Me and my car blew up in the end.

Ste (Fuzzy), Friday, 5 November 2004 16:03 (nineteen years ago) link

me and my plane got shot down trying to fly over it. i also tried to boat over to it only to get shot to shit by a helicopter.

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Friday, 5 November 2004 16:19 (nineteen years ago) link

OK, not to spoil anything, but eventually after you do a handful of missions in Las Venturas there's one where you have to fly a jet to a surprise mission-only area that isn't even on the map. I'll just leave it at that.

MC Transmaniacon (natepatrin), Friday, 5 November 2004 18:03 (nineteen years ago) link

i know what it is!

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Friday, 5 November 2004 18:04 (nineteen years ago) link

Seriously, when the text came up telling me what I had to do I went "oh hell no" and when I actually GOT THERE I completely flipped out.

MC Transmaniacon (natepatrin), Friday, 5 November 2004 18:54 (nineteen years ago) link

Just to be clear: it's not on the map, rather than being the square marked "no fly zone"?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 5 November 2004 19:03 (nineteen years ago) link

Right. You have to fly out to a little marker several (in-game) miles over the ocean and then all of a sudden you're there.

I really think we should have a spoiler tag on this thread so I can dork out over what it is.

MC Transmaniacon (natepatrin), Friday, 5 November 2004 19:58 (nineteen years ago) link

i am so far away from this point... please tell... do whatever you must...

firstworldman (firstworldman), Friday, 5 November 2004 20:50 (nineteen years ago) link

I think I know.

57 7th (calstars), Friday, 5 November 2004 21:05 (nineteen years ago) link

I have got to stop reading this thread everytime that I see that it's been updated.

It's St. Mark's Bistro. In Liberty City. It's mid-winter there, apparently. It's just a big, chaotic shootout and a definite nominee for the "Holy Shit video game moments" thread.

MC Transmaniacon (natepatrin), Friday, 5 November 2004 22:01 (nineteen years ago) link

Holy shit! That's awesome. I was guessing Area 51.

57 7th (calstars), Friday, 5 November 2004 22:10 (nineteen years ago) link

There is an "Area 69" (tee hee) but there's no aliens. What they DO have, however, is SO FUCKING AWESOME. Think "unconventional means of transportation". (Not a UFO, but cooler.)

MC Transmaniacon (natepatrin), Friday, 5 November 2004 22:20 (nineteen years ago) link

The jokes seem a bit more redundant in their peurile nature (Area 69, Pier 69, the San Fierro 69ers, about 90 puns on the word "wanker") but that's the game's only real downside for me so far. That and the occasional framerate choke.

MC Transmaniacon (natepatrin), Friday, 5 November 2004 22:23 (nineteen years ago) link

it just crashed for the first time on me, I was taking a photograph of two people shooting each other inside a train station and it froze completely.

Ste (Fuzzy), Friday, 5 November 2004 22:57 (nineteen years ago) link

tell me about the trains!
how is riding them? are they useful to get around?

trigonalmayhem (trigonalmayhem), Friday, 5 November 2004 22:58 (nineteen years ago) link

"unconventional means of transportation"

A space-hopper?

Ste (Fuzzy), Friday, 5 November 2004 22:58 (nineteen years ago) link

The trains just seem the same as they were in GTA3, they are fairly useful to get around if you know where you're going. Although there is a cargo train which has flat bed carriages too.

Ste (Fuzzy), Friday, 5 November 2004 23:00 (nineteen years ago) link

Neat!

thanks!

do they go between islands or just around each one?

trigonalmayhem (trigonalmayhem), Friday, 5 November 2004 23:03 (nineteen years ago) link

I haven't really checked but there are railway lines linking islands so I would guess yes, I'm going to play it again now so will have a look.

I approached some girl in a Driving School building but she said I didn't have much style, how do I improve my 'style'?

Ste (Fuzzy), Friday, 5 November 2004 23:07 (nineteen years ago) link

beat her face in with a baseball bat
she got no right to be dissin on you.

trigonalmayhem (trigonalmayhem), Friday, 5 November 2004 23:11 (nineteen years ago) link

She called me 'skinny boy' too, which is what I am in real life. I felt quite hurt, I shall do as you say trig.

Ste (Fuzzy), Friday, 5 November 2004 23:14 (nineteen years ago) link

give that bitch a kick for me after she's down.

trigonalmayhem (trigonalmayhem), Friday, 5 November 2004 23:16 (nineteen years ago) link

consider her targeted for termination.

Ste (Fuzzy), Friday, 5 November 2004 23:19 (nineteen years ago) link

I can't break the habit of eating and then killing everyone in the restaurant to pay for my food. I don't need the money, but the chainsaw is so pretty...

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Friday, 5 November 2004 23:19 (nineteen years ago) link

bash them to death with the bouquet of flowers..

Ste (Fuzzy), Friday, 5 November 2004 23:20 (nineteen years ago) link

liz, rob, sgs and markelby had just witnessed a street being turned into a river of blood and explosions as a result of someone obtaining a chainsaw

ken c (ken c), Saturday, 6 November 2004 02:35 (nineteen years ago) link

oh wow i lied a bit about the trains, you can actually drive them yourself. I just kept my finger on accelerate and eventually the pad started vibrating a lot, then I derailed and the carriages went everywhere. wow indeed.

Ste (Fuzzy), Saturday, 6 November 2004 03:57 (nineteen years ago) link

holy
fucking
awesome

are theylike subway trains or just normal rail line trains that share the rails with freight trains?

trigonalmayhem (trigonalmayhem), Saturday, 6 November 2004 03:59 (nineteen years ago) link

normal rail trains, lots of tunnels on the second island though.

i noticed that there are no rampages in this one.

Ste (Fuzzy), Saturday, 6 November 2004 04:27 (nineteen years ago) link

Has anyone gotten all 100 graffiti tags in the first city? I'm up to 53, but it's slow-going now, I keep 'accidentally' running over someone and getting the cops on my ass. Also, the Ballas fucking hate me, if I'm anywhere near their part of town a pack tries to hunt me down.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Saturday, 6 November 2004 04:34 (nineteen years ago) link

... but there are rampages. Not only that, some are two-player co-op.

Joshua Houk (chascarrillo), Saturday, 6 November 2004 05:24 (nineteen years ago) link

OK, I keep spoiling things, but I can't help sharing the enthusiastic dorkness: the secret means of transportation found in Area 69 IS A FUCKING JETPACK, PEOPLE.

SPACE GANGSTA, AWAAAAAAAAAAY

SPACE GANGSTA, AWAAAAAAAAAAY

It was worth the spoiler just to read that.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Saturday, 6 November 2004 05:49 (nineteen years ago) link

oh fuck now i need a screengrab of that

Sir Kingfish Beavis D'Azzmonch (Kingfish), Saturday, 6 November 2004 06:33 (nineteen years ago) link

It's great, you can fly it and shoot people at the same time. It looks kinda like the one James Bond had in Thunderball.

MC Transmaniacon (natepatrin), Saturday, 6 November 2004 07:03 (nineteen years ago) link

Nate Patrin, you suck. I haven't been not reading FAQs for the last three days just to see in in print.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Sunday, 7 November 2004 20:58 (nineteen years ago) link

I was supposed to finish Vice City "one last time" before I bought this, but I am made of mortal flesh, and I got a copy on Friday. I did actually go back to VC during the weekend, so points of comparison:

Being able to climb walls if you've misread the map is really useful, though you don't notice it until you're missing it.

Proper camera controls! And being able to turn on and off the types of thing that show up on the map!

The fire engine missions are much easier than in VC, because the passengers don't run so much. I went looking for three that had got away 30 seconds ago, and they were clumped together 100 yards up the road, just blazin. In VC, they'd be specks on the horizon.

The fire engine misions also show that there still isn't anything like an proper economy. Work on the missions for up to $500 per if you're lucky OR spend 20-30 minutes and earn enough to but all the $10,000 houses and everything from the clothes stores.

I know everyone said it about VC, but damn, the cops are so much harsher in this. It takes forever for one star to disappear, and the motorcycle cops will give you that star if you even brush off them.

The race in the stadium seems to be a normal race, without crack-fueled crash-addicts and, as such, is deemed counter-fun.

I think the muscle stuff is counter-fun as well. I built up my muscle, and at one point gained enough respect to form a three man gang. If driving around (eg in the paramedic missions) and its attendant drop in muscle loses me that respect, then that is over the line into Simsland.

I'm obviously only near the start, but the scene with B-Dup and Big Bear is grimmer than anything I can remember in GTA3 or VC.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Sunday, 7 November 2004 21:25 (nineteen years ago) link

What mission opens up the Gang war colour coded stuff?

Earlier i killed several cops with that dildo then took to the skies in a plane (at this point i had 4 stars after a few other killings) i spied a police helicopter so i crashed my plane into that, parachuting out in time to hear the explosion and then having the bad luck to land ON A POLICE BOAT!!!!

Hari Ashurst (Toaster), Sunday, 7 November 2004 21:38 (nineteen years ago) link

While wearing a "Fuck Tha Police" t-shirt!

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Sunday, 7 November 2004 22:21 (nineteen years ago) link

I am now shamed by my earlier rudeness to Nate Patrin, and acknowledge that he does not in fact suck. I'm still sort of annoyed though.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Sunday, 7 November 2004 22:24 (nineteen years ago) link

... but there are rampages. Not only that, some are two-player co-op.

ive seen 1 two-player rampage, and thats it. they must be well hidden?

Ste (Fuzzy), Sunday, 7 November 2004 23:57 (nineteen years ago) link

Trust me, the things I have spoiled are maybe 3% of the HOLY SHIT moments in the game.

MC Transmaniacon (natepatrin), Monday, 8 November 2004 01:20 (nineteen years ago) link

And does completing the fire truck missions make you fireproof? Because I think I could really use that right now.

MC Transmaniacon (natepatrin), Monday, 8 November 2004 01:20 (nineteen years ago) link

Yep, that's what it does.

Paramedic missions: These were strange in the previous two games, because the positions of the people would be picked randomly from a fixed range. So the most difficult mission was level 3, because you had to go here and here and here, and if they were miles apart you were screwed. Now they start out really close to the hospital, and by leve 12 they're miles away. Also I think the general mayhem logic must have a clause for the passengers in this mission: several times a car has started to pass me, then stopped before it creamed the passenger that's trying to board.

Holy Shit the trip skip! Seriously, they should have called this one GTA4, it make Vice City look like it was made by Traveller's Tales.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 8 November 2004 01:50 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah, Vice City feels about as big as Downtown St. Paul by comparison

MC Transmaniacon (natepatrin), Monday, 8 November 2004 02:04 (nineteen years ago) link

Without the Snoopies.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Monday, 8 November 2004 05:44 (nineteen years ago) link

ok, stoopid questions time:

is there a ammu-nation in los santos, because my fire-power seems to be letting me down and i have shedloads of cash...

should i be aiming to get my "muscle" stat to the end of the bar? i've done this with my stamina one, but i don't want to turn into some sort of muscle mary...
