^ "this one weird trick will solve society's drug addiction problems". entire article peddles a false premise that the cause of addiction must be a single simple thing, rather than a complex of interrelated things.
― Aimless, Thursday, 12 February 2015 17:36 (nine years ago) link
tbf "lack of human connection" is a complex of interrelated things
― mattresslessness, Thursday, 12 February 2015 17:44 (nine years ago) link
tbemf, "unhappiness" is an even larger complex of interrelated things, but that would seem to drive nearer to the truth than just "lack of human connection".
― Aimless, Thursday, 12 February 2015 17:53 (nine years ago) link
they're the same thing afaict
― mattresslessness, Thursday, 12 February 2015 18:02 (nine years ago) link

article seems ok to me; even if it isn't the most nuanced thing in the world anything that promotes rehabilitation over punishment re drug use is doing good.
― Mordy, Thursday, 12 February 2015 18:12 (nine years ago) link
you are right. I did not form my statement correctly to make my point. I'll try again.
if unhappiness and a lack of human connection are the same thing, then unhappiness could not exist in the presence of a human connection. Love between humans is a variety of human connection. Incidentally, so is hate between two humans. If unhappiness is possible when you are connected to other humans through love or hate or some other vital emotional connection, then unhappiness is not "the same thing" as lack of human connection.
Less drily, I love my daughter very deeply and we have a strong bond. She was born with a massive range of physical and mental deficits and suffers frequent seizures. In spite of the happiness my connection with my daughter brings to me, there have been many times in my life when that deep bond of love was accompanied by a despair so palpable that I sometimes hoped either she or I would die so there could be an end to my unhappiness. This also was a time I was self-medicating with alcohol in order to relieve some of that unhappiness through numbness and I was closest to falling into addiction.
Because of this experience, I do not equate unhappiness with a lack of deep and meaningful human connection.
― Aimless, Thursday, 12 February 2015 18:21 (nine years ago) link
that is getting way too complex, throwing love into the mix (what is love etc). i think the point that greater and more dynamic connectedness makes addiction less addictive for people is solid if not rock-solid because ultimately it is a complex maybe unprovable hypothesis that that article wants to present as simple (which is what is annoying fb bait about it imo). but in general i agree with it, at least i find it more convincing than pathologizing addiction and turning it into something completely internal or genetic.
xp i see what you mean.
― mattresslessness, Thursday, 12 February 2015 18:28 (nine years ago) link
i kind of agree with you Aimless but you're argument is cheating - to say "unhappiness is lack of human connection" doesn't imply that happiness = human connection, but only, perhaps, that human connection is a necessary tho not sufficient condition for happiness
― https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZI22vpZ5ztQ (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 12 February 2015 18:46 (nine years ago) link
"you're argument" ?? you get me, anyway
i do think that the possibility/option of human connection is probably necessary for long-term happiness
― https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZI22vpZ5ztQ (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 12 February 2015 18:47 (nine years ago) link
probably there are ppl for whom happiness is attainable w/out any human connection (some ppl probably preferring a hermit-style life?) but i imagine for the vast majority of humans...
― Mordy, Thursday, 12 February 2015 18:49 (nine years ago) link
the main thesis here that lack of human connection is a primary factor leading to drug/gambling addiction isn't a bad one
― Nhex, Thursday, 12 February 2015 18:50 (nine years ago) link
i wonder if it's possible to enjoy hermitage without the context of bustly human society to get away from
― https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZI22vpZ5ztQ (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 12 February 2015 18:50 (nine years ago) link
though, it discounts the fact that people often enable each other's addictions, alcoholics with other alcoholics, gamblers with other gamblers
― Nhex, Thursday, 12 February 2015 18:51 (nine years ago) link
xp yeah seems like life would be incredibly boring if it was just wake up, scrounge for food, sleep every day
to say "unhappiness is lack of human connection" doesn't imply that happiness = human connection
I was addressing the idea that unhappiness and a lack of human connection were "the same thing", i.e. identical. Identity requires that one cannot exist without the other. In this case, unhappiness could not exist without a lack of human connection because they are "the same thing". Because identity is an absolute condition, all that is necessary to refute their identity is one instance where unhappiness exists in tandem with strong, positive human connections.
Sorry to get all syllogistic, NV, but when I'm told I'm cheating I'd rather address it than appear to agree through my silence. I'm tetchy that way. It's an internet disease.

A great parent is always there. Firstly, because it is illegal to leave your child by their self. Secondly, if little Jonathan should start getting crabby because his parents have chosen to forsake any personal connection with him in favor of building a rocket ship, someone will need to get that child into a body of water immediately. The Atlantic, preferably 20 miles or so off the coast, seems appropriate for Mr Crabbypants.
Now I know this punishment may seem a little too strict for some parents, what with all the swimming to shore while dodging sharks, but lets not forget, Jonathan is unlovable. Straight up. Even if he does make it of out of the ocean alive I would still chalk this up as a positive experience for a parent afflicted with an unlovable child, refusing to love that child; and in the process learning to love themselves instead.
By the way, Jonathan, building a rocket is literally rocket science. Think about it.
