lest we forget, republicans have always have a natural ability to "rap" with "the people"

Each time I read a quote to that effect from a GOP operative, I sense an invisible "...just like Barack Obama." at the end. I think a huge number of Republicans still think to this day that Obama was elected twice because, gosh, he's just got this fabulous gift of gab.

Huckabee seems to have stepped in it good. He either remains steadfast in his support of a serial child molester or he rescinds his support and alienates himself from the braindead evangelical base he's accumulated. Good goin'!

haha waht is this about the Duggar thing
― Οὖτις, Friday, 22 May 2015 22:21 (nine years ago) link
lol of course
(although that article's pretty shitty - Huck's not being inconsistent with who he forgives, i.e. contrite self-professed evangelical Christians)
― Οὖτις, Friday, 22 May 2015 22:25 (nine years ago) link
tbrr the problem with the Duggar family isn't just the molestation, it's that they acted just like the Catholic Church: denied it, hid it, enabled it, failed to notify authorities or obtain appropriate counseling etc. oh but yeah they did the most important thing in Fuckabee's eyes, they "prayed on it"
― Οὖτις, Friday, 22 May 2015 22:28 (nine years ago) link
It's coming out now that Oprah's producers are the ones who originally brought this story to the attention of the local police back in 2006 after someone alerted them to the molestation and they promptly canceled the Duggar family interview. Wish Oprah had used the full extent of her power to crush the Duggars into powder back then, but telling the police is good enough I suppose.
― Johnny Fever, Friday, 22 May 2015 22:38 (nine years ago) link
the Duggar family claim that they had addressed this all appropriately when it happened looks like total horseshit. not surprised Chuckabee would sign off on it, probably feels its similar to what he went through with his puppy murdering progeny

not that huckabee had any shot at either the nomination, let alone the actual office of President, but surely his support of this douche kills his political aspirations dead
― akm, Monday, 25 May 2015 22:03 (nine years ago) link
political aspirations do not die so easily. Nixon came back from the dead several times.

how come there aren't more Democrats boosting their speaking/public appearance/book tour fees by jumping in the ring? seems weird for the GOP to have such a monopoly on craven opportunism.

I'm reminded of the exchange between Will Graham and Hannibal Lecter in Michael Mann's Manhunter:
Graham: I know that I'm not smarter than you.
Lecter: Then how did you catch me?
Graham: You had disadvantages.
Lecter: What disadvantages?
Graham: You're insane.
― the top man in the language department (誤訳侮辱), Tuesday, 26 May 2015 17:28 (nine years ago) link
that math problem thing was conventional wisdom was all the rage after Romney lost in 2012. the GOP appointed a blue ribbon committee that told them they must pass immigration reform and win the latino vote. the upshot of this is the GOP hopes Jeb will speak a few words of Spanish and paper over the whole issue for them.

gop has a structural advantage in congressional elections, until that stops awarding them majorities theyre not gonna be desperate enough to change the policies/culture thats causing them problems on the presidential level

the speculation here about things the bottom tier might propose to get noticed seems plausible (sometimes eerily so), but i think it's mistaken to assume that the front runners (such as they are) would be obliged to change tactics to follow them. scott walker is not going to star talking about a new invasion of iraq just because some nobody is polling well in a few districts with it. i don't remember romney co-opting the 9-9-9 plan in his struggle with santorum.
if anything, the leading actors count on the wingnuts so they can depict themselves as the "level-headed" type of republican. remember that the base assumes the majority of americans like your basic, tough-on-things, gets-things-done conservatives, and will vote for them given the chance.
― Doctor Casino, Tuesday, 26 May 2015 17:34 (nine years ago) link
romney got bullied to the right last time around its a classic phenomenon u can p much bank on it
― lag∞n, Tuesday, 26 May 2015 17:36 (nine years ago) link
can we start taking bets on what dumb shit Scott Walker will do to undermine his front-runner status
― Οὖτις, Tuesday, 26 May 2015 17:36 (nine years ago) link
i mean level headed doesnt play to a base that disagrees with you
― lag∞n, Tuesday, 26 May 2015 17:37 (nine years ago) link
one of the things I enjoyed the most about the last GOP primary was the one-by-one elimination of temporary front-runners - Newt was up for a week! then crashed and burned. Then it was Herman Cain's turn! *kablooey* Then it was Rick Perry's turn! etc. The frantic lashing about for an alternative to Romney, resulting in everyone failing one after the other was truly a thing of beauty.
