actually the fact that theres no clear front runner on the republican side is atypical

lag∞n, Tuesday, 2 June 2015 16:50 (nine years ago) link

or even forget no clear front runner the fact that no one can crack 12%

lag∞n, Tuesday, 2 June 2015 16:51 (nine years ago) link

walker has kochmentum!

Aimless, Tuesday, 2 June 2015 16:52 (nine years ago) link

Jeb Bush could! Until people took a closer look.

i hope rand paul stays in the race as long as possible to keep the issue of surveillance, etc. in the debates

that said, i suspect that once he opens his mouth about other stuff, he'll cease to be a credible candidate

kind of like his dad

he quipped with heat (amateurist), Tuesday, 2 June 2015 17:24 (nine years ago) link

feel like he has a strong enough built in base that he shd be able to hang in at least through the first few primary states

lag∞n, Tuesday, 2 June 2015 17:29 (nine years ago) link

I expect him to stick around the longest tbh

well yeah i think the intensity of the paul fanbase will mean he sticks around far past the point when he ceases to be a credible candidate for the nomination

...again, like his dad

yup

morbs otm about "no one is paying any heed," I think. bear in mind that at this point in 1999, neither bush nor gore had even officially announced yet even if they were presumed frontrunners (obv in case of gore). the whole W vs. mccain (plus the third-tier goof troop) thing wasn't even rolling until the fall at least. giuliani was the presumed front-runner at this point in 2007 IIRC.

This still delights me a great deal.

he is much more legit than his dad tho, while not being actually legit, tho he might end up doing worse if the libertarian bases isnt as pumped on him

yeah i still remember a conversation with a professor, who is the smartest person i know, and he insisted that guiliani would be our next president, a prognostication which filled me with fear

smart people can be very wrong!

he quipped with heat (amateurist), Tuesday, 2 June 2015 18:32 (nine years ago) link

(btw the professor was equally horrified by his own prognostication)

he quipped with heat (amateurist), Tuesday, 2 June 2015 18:33 (nine years ago) link

i look forward to walker failing

although i would look forward even more to him being swallowed up by a quicksand-like vat of pig shit

he quipped with heat (amateurist), Tuesday, 2 June 2015 18:34 (nine years ago) link

Yes. I should note that many of these guys run to give them leverage when their agents negotiate FOX and ABC "This Week" contracts.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 2 June 2015 18:35 (nine years ago) link

oh i think walker really, really wants the brass ring

he quipped with heat (amateurist), Tuesday, 2 June 2015 18:38 (nine years ago) link

and so do Bush and Rubio. But Fiorini and Santorum? Their contracts are up.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 2 June 2015 18:46 (nine years ago) link

huckabee is the most obvious example

it'd almost (/almost/) be funny if by some bizarre twist rand paul actually ended up with the nomination. he'd probably be at least as freaked out as any of us. no way he actually expects to be president.

he quipped with heat (amateurist), Tuesday, 2 June 2015 18:49 (nine years ago) link

I don't think Rand Paul is running for the 2016 presidency, but I definitely think he's running for the 2020 or 2024 presidency. His hat's in the ring now as a "different" kind of Republican, and now he'll have 4-8 years to balance that with ingratiating himself with the GOP establishment.

intheblanks, Tuesday, 2 June 2015 19:13 (nine years ago) link

Randy's playing some long game yeah

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 2 June 2015 19:14 (nine years ago) link

He's made a big show of reaching out to nontraditional Republican constituencies, and unlike his dad, he doesn't seem like an old crackpot. I imagine his hope is that, within the next 4-12 years, the GOP/general polity shifts closer to his "soft" libertarianism, and he shifts a little to the traditionally conservative side while still giving off the "optimist with new ideas" vibe.

intheblanks, Tuesday, 2 June 2015 19:18 (nine years ago) link

"optimist with new ideas and clothes two sizes too big for him" vibe.

lag∞n, Tuesday, 2 June 2015 19:19 (nine years ago) link

I think intheblanks is right about the hope of a continuing libertarian shift, but I think it's a losing game for Rand Paul. People can pull off "newcomer with new ideas" sometimes when coming from a governorship - they're relatively "new" nationally and they've had some space to say "We tried this innovative program in my state, and accomplished X and Y." Within the next 4 to 12 years, Senator Rand Paul will have racked up a ton of votes on a ton of little bills and will seem a lot more like a boring old politician, by then in his 60s, hair graying. Obviously this isn't universal - McCain somehow managed to make "maverick" stick on himself - but you really can't be the youthful force of big zesty ideas forever.

Doctor Casino, Tuesday, 2 June 2015 19:23 (nine years ago) link

agreed thats prob what rands thinking, tho of course libertarianism is intrinsically a niche brand

lag∞n, Tuesday, 2 June 2015 19:25 (nine years ago) link

new ideas including climate change denial and ill-fitting clothes xps

both pauls are complete dipshits and the fact that a notable amount of ppl my age (mid/late 20s) think that they're like, even halfway decent politicians - bc oh wow rand paul is anti-spying and ron is cool with teh drug legalization - is horrifying to me

dellevadova depression beard (slothroprhymes), Tuesday, 2 June 2015 19:30 (nine years ago) link

on a similar note a week or so ago (maybe 2) glenn greenwald was repeatedly RTing rand paul anti-NSA quotes - like at least a half-dozen! - and i thought "uhhhh glenn...he doesn't really regard u as human, his dad is cool with u but otherwise a dipshit so maybe could u not do that"

dellevadova depression beard (slothroprhymes), Tuesday, 2 June 2015 19:32 (nine years ago) link

greenwald is fundamentally a libertarian dipshit himself reason why everyone hates him

that and he writes like a lawyer

lag∞n, Tuesday, 2 June 2015 19:33 (nine years ago) link

@Doctor Casino

Yeah, you may well be right. Paul's best hope is probably a win for Hillary, a disappointing Clinton presidency, then he roles in in 2020 with his record of "GOP brand sucks"/moderated drug policy/bucking the establishment on NSA, while still having solid conservative positions to win over GOP folks.

intheblanks, Tuesday, 2 June 2015 19:34 (nine years ago) link

Yeah, and Obama is a mass murderer but Sotomayor was a good SCOTUS appointment. So, your point?

xxxp

Just to be clear, not the country's best hope, just feel like that's Rand Paul's road to the presidency. The climate change denial part is of keeping mostly orthodox GOP views.

intheblanks, Tuesday, 2 June 2015 19:36 (nine years ago) link

that is, people can be praised for one stand in isolation from others, depending on the context. xxp

haha, fair point. "Clinton's disappointing presidency" is a bit of a pointless speculation/reach, but I think that the other stuff is still probably Paul's strategy for 2020 or 2024.

intheblanks, Tuesday, 2 June 2015 19:38 (nine years ago) link

i suppose it was an enemy-of-my-enemy approach in glenn's mind - and was specifically referring to rand paul not being down with gay people afaict
