if the first pope abdicates, and he's infallible, then i'd think his abdication is infallible as well? just guessing since i'm not a catholic.

Mordy, Wednesday, 10 June 2015 17:31 (nine years ago) link

Yeah there have been two popes before. Lots of Evangelicals are into pope conspiracies tho, and this guy is socially liberal, making for a healthy market for pope Birtherism.

really gonna get no traction with "Clinton sucks" articles here, right?

the increasing costive borborygmi (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 10 June 2015 17:57 (nine years ago) link

What makes you think no one's read them?

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 10 June 2015 17:58 (nine years ago) link

Most of us have been posting "HRC sucks" articles since Teapot Dome.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 10 June 2015 17:59 (nine years ago) link

i'm always interested in seeing the brave new frontiers plumbed by a particularly groundbreaking 'clinton sucks' article

Unless things change drastically I think it's pretty safe to assume she will remain a pro-banking corporate democrat and most "HRC sucks" articles will just be nit-picking.

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Wednesday, 10 June 2015 18:07 (nine years ago) link

morbius, plenty of us hate HRC and we've made it clear! but if it continues to fuel your sense of superiority to think we're all her shills, by all means, continue...

i love HRC but it's not bc i'm ignorant of left-wing complaints about her so no need to keep posting the same screed on my behalf.

Mordy, Wednesday, 10 June 2015 18:43 (nine years ago) link

maybe we can get you two your own secret borad to talk past each other on

I don't, goddamn you, but I don't understand the endless teeheeing at the GOP clowncar, who I find about as funny as actual clowns.

i have no idea what i'll do in november 2016... because it's 17 months away! i doubt i'll vote for HRC in the primary, but if i'm still in a swing state you bet i'll vote for her over scott walker or rick santorum.

but in any event i don't subscribe to your particular political calculus, which seems designed to achieve nothing but a sense of self-satisfaction, may the world rot.

he quipped with heat (amateurist), Wednesday, 10 June 2015 22:14 (nine years ago) link

i've been experiencing for the past five years the effect of republicans controlling every branch of government, and it's far uglier than anything you've experienced in NY, believe me.

he quipped with heat (amateurist), Wednesday, 10 June 2015 22:15 (nine years ago) link

Barney Frank: "Never let the other side think you’re satisfied; you should always be asking for more; and you best maximize gains in fact by minimizing them in characterization, until and unless you are a hundred percent successful."

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 10 June 2015 22:20 (nine years ago) link

Once upon a time I considered myself one of those people who, to quote Charles Pierce, claim independence as “a way to buff up your intellect by staying above the hurly-burly of ordinary politics.” But when you live in a red state that's going to sink in five feet of water you do what you can.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 10 June 2015 22:22 (nine years ago) link

i have never been remotely interested in buffing up my intellect through voting for the most overrated office in the unfree world; don't ascribe balsa-wood motives to everyone.

the increasing costive borborygmi (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 10 June 2015 22:28 (nine years ago) link

it's not as though i'm ascribing them in ignorance!

i've never met anyone who has such scorn for pretty much any political view or even taste profile that is not completely his own (indeed it often seems you will shift your position so as not to achieve any congruence); on the basis on your posts here you seem absolutely consumed by a narcissism of small differences (which you no doubt would characterize as a gaping chasm).

i can't pretend to understand your deeper motives but just based on what i read here i imagine you must find casting smug disdain upon others' opinions rewarding on some level (perhaps only in the short term), because you do it over and over and over etc. again.

i can't think of any other poster on ILX--since i started "contributing," so to speak, in 2002--whose "persona" is so devoted to, and nearly completely identified with, casting scorn on others and greeting every earnest contribution with absolute cynicism.

he quipped with heat (amateurist), Wednesday, 10 June 2015 22:34 (nine years ago) link

and i'm guilty of the same thing! but, i hope, not to the same persistent degree, and not to the exclusion of other things.

he quipped with heat (amateurist), Wednesday, 10 June 2015 22:34 (nine years ago) link

i mean there's no doubt that from a certain point of view, the world is a hopeless and deeply fucked place, as is american politics at most levels, in many places. but you'd think those facts would lend you a bit of empathy rather than the presumption that you're the last honest man.

he quipped with heat (amateurist), Wednesday, 10 June 2015 23:21 (nine years ago) link

for example it fails to mention how many people working for walker (as both governor and in his previous role as milwaukee county executive) have been indicted/convicted of various abuses of their positions.

The thing I find mystifying about these chucklefuck campaigns is they are like 100% of the time dominated by infighting in the inner circle of managers, confidantes, and cousins on payroll. Maybe it's all this campaigning starting a year and a half out from the election keeping people from actually preparing.
