there are a lot of assumptions in there that I don't quite buy, although I have heard them in other cities of the midwest with "art communities"
― Upright Mammal (mh), Tuesday, 16 June 2015 15:57 (nine years ago) link
That might be the least worthy use of the word "titan" in history

Also a lot of that is um... Well Minneapolis has a good art scene but it's not New York but it's nice and New York is super expensive but it's also more exciting than Minneapolis, like...no shit?

Honestly one of the worst things about Minneapolis is how we're constantly worried about how we stack up in the arts
― kurt kobaïan (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 16 June 2015 17:54 (nine years ago) link
sometimes people aren't being mean about your abilities when they say there are "too many painters," they literally mean that there are so many painters that it's going to be difficult to establish a niche when the interest is so divided
― Upright Mammal (mh), Tuesday, 16 June 2015 17:56 (nine years ago) link
xp yeah it's lame. we're up there man! we're on the map. right up there, indianapolis, columbus, ft worth, charlotte, detroit, el paso, seattle, denver, all of them

"worked for Target" is such a broad brush. not that it matters what your day job is if it's in service of what you view as your actual work, but?
― Upright Mammal (mh), Tuesday, 16 June 2015 18:28 (nine years ago) link
Who will fill this void of "aging hipster lady that works a corporate gig but has an artsy side that she uses to define herself"? Might as well pack up the city and move on I guess.

they employ so many people, a lot of 'creatives' too. copywriters, people in textiles, designers of all kinds. it was sort of the underlying base to the whole fashion & arts infrastructure here. the bloodletting after the canada debacle was seriously bad; i think a lot of the uhh elegiac tone of that article only makes sense in that context.
― goole, Tuesday, 16 June 2015 18:33 (nine years ago) link
tbh every person I've known who does organization in an arts community either eventually moves to do so in a larger city, usually as a paid position, or eventually rededicates their effort toward a more fulfilling career in their existing community
that's not really a community shortcoming or tragedy, change is good
― Upright Mammal (mh), Tuesday, 16 June 2015 18:34 (nine years ago) link
xp yeah, I wondered if that was partially the case

Some people don't get the economics like OK let's imagine Cheapo could afford even 100K a month in rent. That's not going to compete with a new building where they'll do 3 storefronts with 30k rents and then 200 units at 1500 or more a pop

KEEP ON 'MOCKIN' IN THE FREE WORLD
Summertime and the livin’ is easy in South Minneapolis, where many of the teens have been practicing the fine art of hammocking – or 'mocking, as the kids say – since early spring. At all times of day and night, bat kids in their portable vinyl caves can be seen hanging amid the tall pines of Lake Harriet’s Rose and Peace Gardens, among other favorite hangs.
“Hang.” That, along with “chill” and “relax,” is the word used most by the ‘mockers to describe their attraction to the non-activity of whiling away hours in the trees, talking with their friends, and listening to music, the birds, water fountains, and rain. Because of easy bike access to a multitude of nearby lakes, creeks, and the Mississippi River, Minneapolis is particularly fertile ground for a full-on ‘mocking craze, and right on cue, area sporting goods stores tell Minnpost they can’t keep hammocks in stock this summer.

hang, relax, & chill
― kurt kobaïan (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 2 July 2015 16:05 (eight years ago) link
“It’s chill vibes here, and a good place to come to be one with nature. It’s good to be so high,” said Richards. “It’s like an activity, but we’re not doing anything,” said Bayer. “At first I saw people doing it by the lake, and I wondered what that was, but now it’s just go with the flow,” said Sanders. “Like, if my friend gets one, I’m gonna try and get one. If I see him on a ‘mock, I want a ‘mock, and someone sees me with a ‘mock, they want a ‘mock. It’s a great wave in the city. We’re teenagers. Instead of rotting our brains inside, we’re outside. Chill vibe.”
