I imagine the maesters are in the books more but there's been v little hint of what they get up to in the show so far besides act like regular medieval scholars

ogmor, Tuesday, 16 June 2015 17:34 (nine years ago) link

Yeah I think most exposition on that front began and ended with Pycelle (treating Robert/John Arryn. Boasting about his role in the birth of Cersei's children. Aemon was too old to get up to much

Medieval scholasticism is definitely the model he uses but the role of maesters is supposed to be far more practical than that would suggest.

were the sand snakes actually awesome in the novels? Before this season started it seemed like lots of people were excited abt their presence.

nomar, Tuesday, 16 June 2015 18:10 (nine years ago) link

They really didn't seem so to me at the time and I wasn't going to go back and read all that shit again, so I just assumed they were and I'd skimmed it.

re: Sand Snakes GRRM was going for a sexy Deadly Vipers Assassination Squad only with 8 ladies, and so yes, that aspect got people excited.

Falconetti Pot (Leee), Tuesday, 16 June 2015 18:17 (nine years ago) link

they were okay, and at least not risible

i get annoyed whenever the sand worms are on screen, so lame

they are lame, but idk, i am not very upset when they are on my screen.

I quite like seeing the recap (on Thronecast) of Melisandre meeting Arya and correctly predicting her future. I never would have remembered that.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Tuesday, 16 June 2015 18:50 (nine years ago) link

Correctly but in very vague terms.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Tuesday, 16 June 2015 18:50 (nine years ago) link

it makes sense if they're more like functionaries or mandarins. for a show about power there's v little sense of the political landscape. there's feudalism with no real sense of class, kings with no talk of divine right/mandate of heaven (stannis's awareness of his destiny feels v personal). idk who is supposed to be actually at work enacting their small council biz & running a credit-based economy but w/e. varys is obv the best but it just feels like grrm was feeling the idea of some eunuch official archetype but rather than being a member of whole caste he just makes him a guy with a crazy back story he could write later

Chewshabadoo, Tuesday, 16 June 2015 22:50 (nine years ago) link

I thought danaerys was very rude to her dragon, too. He'd been stabbed with loads of spears, rescued her, and she says 'you could at leat find some food' or something. Also, if I was trying to find out where she went it might be worth releasing the other two and following them - I imagine dragons leave a great destruction/word of mouth trail.

I'm assuming they'll delve a bit more into what Maesters actually do next season when Sam becomes one?

Feels like one of the really obvious logical endpoints for the story is to have Arya kill Cersei. In fact I'll be really annoyed if that doesn't happen.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 17 June 2015 12:16 (nine years ago) link

X-post. That post is going to show up for years when people death for imagine dragons. Well, until people stop likin them. So be on your best behaviour for our future indie-rock fans.

Or not. On one of the Grantland podcasts they point out how Sam's quest will likely be less Harvard and the Sorbonne and more University of Phoenix and study abroad, since there's not enough story/book/show left to allow him to go off and become a full-on Maester. They suggest he's just doing an independent study with a focus on killing White Walkers.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 17 June 2015 12:22 (nine years ago) link

aren't there supposed to be white walkers high-footing it to the wall any moment? they're sure taking their sweet time about it. how will Samwise Gamgee ever become a maestro in that time?

how many likable people are left in westeros? it's basically Davos and Sam and Sansa and Brienne and Podrick imo.

nomar, Wednesday, 17 June 2015 17:04 (nine years ago) link

I was going to say Jon Snow, but then I remembered that I don't like him.

Falconetti Pot (Leee), Wednesday, 17 June 2015 17:05 (nine years ago) link

he is also not so much in westeros anymore

I guess brits in Spain is similar, but I don't think that's really reserved for such a specific time of year and I think just as many working class people do that.
