dare to say isner would not be down 2sets to 0 to anyone but roger (or novak maybe) playing like this

johnny crunch, Tuesday, 8 September 2015 03:12 (eight years ago) link

shame the crowd for gasquet/byrd is so sparse but it'd be cool if it went late and filled up after the fed match

johnny crunch, Tuesday, 8 September 2015 03:27 (eight years ago) link

so Isner finally got broken here!

fell asleep midway through the first Anderson/Murray set and sort of shocked Murray managed to lose to such a limited player who didn't seem to be treeing

Halep/Lisicki...lol @ Sabine's collapse, Halep showed good fighting spirit but god everything else in her game needs to be stepped up. She hasn't played Vika since she became good but I still don't think she'll win.

your QFS:

(1) Serena Williams vs. (23) Venus Williams
Kristina Mladenovic vs. Roberta Vinci
(5) Petra Kvitova vs. (26) Flavia Pennetta
(20) Victoria Azarenka vs. (2) Simona Halep

so nutty that Vinci and Pennetta do so disproportionately well here...third USO QF for Vinci (none at the other Slams), sixth for Pennetta (one at the other Slams). Neither of them have games that are any more suited to hard courts than anything else. Very kind draw for Mladenovic but she's improved a ton this year so I guess the Slam breakthrough was inevitable.

H2Hs:

Serena 15-11 Venus (9-8 on hard, 1-0 this year)
Mladenovic 0-0 Vinci
Kvitova 3-3 Pennetta (2-1 on hard)
Azarenka 2-0 Halep (both on hard)

going with Serena, Kiki, Flavia, Vika

(1) Novak Djokovic vs. (18) Feliciano Lopez
(19) Jo-Wilfried Tsonga vs. (9) Marin Cilic
(5) Stan Wawrinka vs. (15) Kevin Anderson
(12) Richard Gasquet vs. (2) Roger Federer

Djokovic 5-0 Lopez (4-0 on hard)
Cilic 4-3 Tsonga (Tsonga 3-2 on hard, Cilic 1-0 this year)
Anderson 4-3 Wawrinka (3-3 on hard, Anderson 1-0 this year)
Federer 14-2 Gasquet (8-0 on hard, 1-0 this year)

Haha I'd forgotten about that Wawrinka/Anderson h2h, Anderson's won the last 4, all since Stan became a Slam champion. Wouldn't be shocked if it happened again, Stan pulled himself together well vs Young but he seems pretty in-and-out mentally...not the best against a servebot

lex pretend, Tuesday, 8 September 2015 10:43 (eight years ago) link

Let's not forget Gasquet's perfect record in Slam QFs. It's only the sixteens he has trouble with. ;)

Michael Jones, Tuesday, 8 September 2015 14:58 (eight years ago) link

Vinci! First Slam SF at the age of 32. That match was shit to start with and got better and better - a bit sublime-to-ridiculous-and-back-again in the last set, that epic 3-3 game...Kiki was just out of gas by the end.

lex pretend, Tuesday, 8 September 2015 18:56 (eight years ago) link

y'all heard a drone crashed into an empty section the other night, right?

The Sunday Times had an op piece lamenting the price of tickets. The writer's first name was Sloane.

I did not know that! I've been following the results but know none of the off-court talking pts bc I've been away

lex pretend, Tuesday, 8 September 2015 21:59 (eight years ago) link

Well this match is turning crazy as it goes.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 8 September 2015 22:27 (eight years ago) link

Tsonga looked like he was gonna totally flop at 4-5 but saved two MPs brilliantly, another at 5-6 and dominated the TB...he was def the better player in that set, it always felt like this would go 5

lex pretend, Tuesday, 8 September 2015 22:28 (eight years ago) link

nice comeback here by tsonga

johnny crunch, Tuesday, 8 September 2015 22:28 (eight years ago) link

Cilic DFs on his fourth MP when serving for the match...

lex pretend, Tuesday, 8 September 2015 23:13 (eight years ago) link

i think cilic can give novak some problems

johnny crunch, Tuesday, 8 September 2015 23:17 (eight years ago) link

please god no

usic ally (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 8 September 2015 23:19 (eight years ago) link

His spirited defence of an unlikely Slam title is reminding me of Costa @ RG 2003. And it was a pretty soft draw to the QF but that was impressive an impressive performance indeed there

lex pretend, Tuesday, 8 September 2015 23:20 (eight years ago) link

there's a weird sort of buzz on twitter for this match among people who don't usually pay that much attention to tennis

usic ally (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 9 September 2015 00:27 (eight years ago) link

poor venus

mookieproof, Wednesday, 9 September 2015 03:20 (eight years ago) link

only saw the first six games before I fell asleep, brilliant quality though

Glad we're heading towards a popcorn final - any of Vika, Petra and Simona should be good, a worthy final opponent for the Grand Slam

lex pretend, Wednesday, 9 September 2015 09:04 (eight years ago) link

3rd set was mostly serving, and serena has the best serve in history when its working so

johnny crunch, Wednesday, 9 September 2015 12:02 (eight years ago) link

crazy that someone who is practically undefeated this year seems so shaky at these events, but Serena on her A-game is basically impossible to beat so yeah

frogbs, Wednesday, 9 September 2015 12:44 (eight years ago) link

only saw the first six games before I fell asleep, brilliant quality though

there was a pretty massive drop off in quality after the first half of the first set, so you didn't miss much

usic ally (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 9 September 2015 14:37 (eight years ago) link

so tired of the dish network 'this is how we do it' ad

mookieproof, Wednesday, 9 September 2015 16:58 (eight years ago) link

I legitimately only just realized those Heineken light ads offer an actual money back guarantee

johnny crunch, Wednesday, 9 September 2015 17:27 (eight years ago) link

made 0 sense anyways to play chang/mac v courier/fish before the qtrfinal so good - http://www.usopen.org/en_US/news/articles/2015-09-09/earlier_start_for_mens_quarters.html?promo=media_wall

Okay what is happening here

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 9 September 2015 20:03 (eight years ago) link

ugh I'm so annoyed I didn't realise Halep/Azarenka resumed, that was great quality until the rain delay and I def did not expect a Halep win!

*continues to ignore Petra forever*

lex pretend, Wednesday, 9 September 2015 22:44 (eight years ago) link

i forgot that Halep was capable of that level of aggressive tennis

cerealbar, Wednesday, 9 September 2015 22:58 (eight years ago) link

such an important win for her, one of her best ever; too many times of late she's looked kind of helpless in her defeats

lex pretend, Wednesday, 9 September 2015 23:19 (eight years ago) link

I read that this is the first Slam where all the women's QFs have gone three sets since the USO 1982.

lex pretend, Wednesday, 9 September 2015 23:26 (eight years ago) link

roger is so ruthless

johnny crunch, Thursday, 10 September 2015 00:12 (eight years ago) link

freakin' amazing

plops of jupiter (rip van wanko), Thursday, 10 September 2015 00:51 (eight years ago) link

Federer/Wawrinka is pretty intriguing I think...they both looked brilliant in their QFs.

H2Hs:

Williams 4-0 Vinci (2-0 on hard, 1-0 this year)
Pennetta 3-1 Halep (1-1 on hard, Halep 1-0 this year)

Vinci has never taken a set off Serena and I think a similar 4 and 3 scoreline to Toronto the other week is her best case scenario. Pennetta beat Halep en route to her first SF here two years ago - the first Slam where Halep was really expected to go deep, and Halep's first week two appearance. If Halep comes back down to earth after the Azarenka heights or if the Halep of round 4 shows up, she'll be in trouble...

Djokovic 13-0 Cilic (9-0 on hard, 2-0 this year)
Federer 16-3 Wawrinka (11-0 on hard, 1-1 this year)

Wawrinka's h2hs against the elite are so lop-sided because they've been beating him for most of his career - credit to him that he's improved so much that his matches against them are real toss-ups now. Federer's net-charging tactic is a bit overrated by the commentators, brilliant that he's adding more dimensions to his game but he lost most of the ones I saw him try vs Gasquet. A lot of it is the fear tactic, players who fear what they perceive he's capable of at net and who then flop the pass, to me it's an opportunistic temporary tactic but something that most will cotton on to quickly. Rather like how Radwanska never repeated her receiving stance from the time she beat Sharapova here.

lex pretend, Thursday, 10 September 2015 11:42 (eight years ago) link

Pennetta gon' rue being so casual on that point for 5-1, I think

lex pretend, Friday, 11 September 2015 15:42 (eight years ago) link

Or not! 5-1.

lex pretend, Friday, 11 September 2015 15:44 (eight years ago) link

Halep has gone from the depths to the heights and back to the depths in her past three matches

lex pretend, Friday, 11 September 2015 15:49 (eight years ago) link

This has a scoreLiNa written all over it. *cheerleading for 16 61 76*

lex pretend, Friday, 11 September 2015 16:03 (eight years ago) link

OK this is p great from Flavia again.

lex pretend, Friday, 11 September 2015 16:12 (eight years ago) link

Halep raised her level and then Pennetta PEAKED THE FUCK OUT OF HER MIND. She's on a mission

lex pretend, Friday, 11 September 2015 16:18 (eight years ago) link

jeez

mookieproof, Friday, 11 September 2015 16:19 (eight years ago) link

Did not expect it! Good stuff.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 11 September 2015 16:20 (eight years ago) link

omg

I Am Curious (Dolezal) (DJP), Friday, 11 September 2015 16:20 (eight years ago) link

!!!!!

19 of the last 21 points I think? I feel like she was 1-3 down, I blinked, and then it was 6-3

lex pretend, Friday, 11 September 2015 16:21 (eight years ago) link

At this point I'd like to believe Halep isn't too lightweight to win a Slam but she's not offering a whole lot of evidence for that.

lex pretend, Friday, 11 September 2015 16:25 (eight years ago) link

I think she's got a decent chance at the French

I Am Curious (Dolezal) (DJP), Friday, 11 September 2015 16:27 (eight years ago) link

whoa Vinci, what a set. One in the eye for everyone who thought she was a joke SFist - would much rather watch this contrast than Serena against Sharapova or Mladenovic or Bouchard or whatever hard hitter

lex pretend, Friday, 11 September 2015 18:10 (eight years ago) link

This third set!

Ned Raggett, Friday, 11 September 2015 18:39 (eight years ago) link

bloody hell

cerealbar, Friday, 11 September 2015 18:40 (eight years ago) link

Vinci. Point of the tournament
