RIP! I wandered into Chester's encampment one afternoon this summer (to be honest, I thought it was some sort of art project and didn't realize I was intruding on someone's home). He came out and introduced himself, telling me about his efforts to feed his cats, among other things. He was quite friendly and I admired the way he had fashioned a space for himself. I'm glad people helped look out for him.

i took a train from Chicago and went to the Walker and State Fair, including APHC, a few years ago. downtown very sleepy, but the fair was a good time.

the frosty and passive-aggressive natives who are polite but don’t ever let you become their friend
yup!
the nasally and condescending middle-aged women I deal with at work (I call them the “Carol Andersons”)
terrible!
the sense of complacency and smug contentment in the belief that Minneapolis/St.Paul/Minnesota is (obviously) the best place to live
i've never really run into this
the strong racism despite all protests to the contrary (that’s the thing--at least people elsewhere kind of admit their racism).
totally.
I am a city dweller who does not care about outdoor recreation.
buddy we have plenty of couch potatoes here.
I don’t care for hockey.
i physically cannot make my eye follow a puck in motion
I also could give two shits about craft beer and hate being scoffed at for not liking something brown that tastes like sausage, cinnamon, and earwax.
ok well i'm scoffing at you
I don’t believe in fake politeness and meaningless small talk. I don’t like babies and never want to have one.
human life... what is it like

the chances of me moving to MN in the next ~2 years are pretty high and I promise not to be that person
although having plenty of friends & family that already live there and having grown up in a place with worse winters probably works in my favor

i guess i am a native and have never experience the whole "natives won't befriend u" thing but: quite literally, most of my best friends in mpls were non-minnesotans by origin. sconnies, dakotans, and former chicagoans.
granted, many of them had gone to university in the cities, which is probably the most sure-fire way to freight your way into a local friendship
― jason waterfalls (gbx), Wednesday, 4 November 2015 19:41 (eight years ago) link
also it seems like when ppl complain about frosty natives they are usually from further afield than the upper midwest?
like, do michiganders and dakotans feel like it's tough to break through the frost? i know my friends from chicago did, but seems like the real upper midwestern states ought to have similar ~vibes~
or am i really just blind to the pronounced difference our scando heritage has wrought
― jason waterfalls (gbx), Wednesday, 4 November 2015 19:48 (eight years ago) link
i met a dude at a party who remarked about that phenomenon, he seemed interesting, we had a good chat
next time around at the same place—they had a series of parties all summer—i guess i wasn't ~defrosted~ enough for him, so he was sitting over my shoulder behind me agonizing to the hostess, his neighbor, about how bewildering it was that people could be all friendly and then utterly freeze you out, obviously referring to me and clearly aggrieved at me the whole time but not able to just be at a party like a normal person
is it any wonder minnesotans protect themselves
― j., Wednesday, 4 November 2015 19:59 (eight years ago) link
There's a hell of a lot of narcisism of small differences between upper midwestern states like ppl act like OMG wisconsin minneosota north dakota and iowa and michigan you might as well compare the culture of bangladesh, north carolina, france and south korea!!!!!
also i feel like i've dealt w/ppl from all over the planet due to my former job and i think ppl are passive aggressive and afraid of conflict in lots of places and the ones who aren't are generally raging assholes
also the japanese can be passive aggressive to the point where they make minnesotans look like the owners of an auto body shop in south boston by comparison

i feel like it'd be hard to make friends as an adult in a new place in any context. there's no built-in opportunity to pal around with people like there was in school. would probably be bewildering and frustrating but i doubt intrinsic to MN
― global tetrahedron, Thursday, 5 November 2015 03:07 (eight years ago) link
tbh most cities do have places where people who are new to the area/scene congregate and it's easier to make friends, but the environment is generally insufferable because it's this sphere of hyper-socialization and the thing bonding you is your shared interest in bonding. you dodge in, find your group of friends, and dodge back out.

Helper collaborated with McNally Smith College of Music students, along with Twin Cities artists, Dequexatron X000 (DJ Tiiiiiiiiiip & Bobby Raps), and Twitter, Vine and Snapchat rising star, Retro Spectro, to produce rhymes and beats that encapsulate Helper’s cunningly entertaining and relatable brand. The Helper mixtape, titled Watch the Stove, gives up-and-coming artists like the students at McNally Smith a platform to share their original music.
