Is your friend independently wealthy

Potrero/Dogpatch is good. There's the soulless world of South Beach condos, but I wouldn't recommend it. I live in Mission Terrace, which is good for a car commute to Palo Alto. My wife does BART to CalTrain, which isn't TOO bad. Mission Terrace/Excelsior are also not quite as bad as the rest of SF, pricing-wise (I mean, still ridiculous, but not as bad).

schwantz, Tuesday, 6 October 2015 21:19 (eight years ago) link

agree that South Beach is really weird, as a neighborhood

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 6 October 2015 21:20 (eight years ago) link

honestly if someone (not saying your friend is) spending most of their waking hours commuting or at work on the peninsula, then does it really matter whether they live in SF proper or in a weird soulless South Beach condo

sarahell, Tuesday, 6 October 2015 21:26 (eight years ago) link

It does for me. Although at this point (kids, etc.) the peninsula is looking more appealing than it used to.

schwantz, Tuesday, 6 October 2015 21:29 (eight years ago) link

hey if anyone isnt doing anything on the 30th im throwing a crazy party at Cobbs Comedy Club and Ghoul and DJ Douggpound are playing!

chaki (kurt schwitterz), Tuesday, 6 October 2015 21:31 (eight years ago) link

Did we ever FAP Ned off? If not, how about a Doctor Who viewing party?

:wq (Leee), Tuesday, 6 October 2015 21:32 (eight years ago) link

id rather ride the 38 at 5pm on a friday than sit through a dr who ep but fully down for a ned fap

chaki (kurt schwitterz), Tuesday, 6 October 2015 21:35 (eight years ago) link

i went to San Francisco yesterday! The people working at the bookstore I browsed were talking about their neighborhood -- in Oakland. That seemed strange to me.

sarahell, Tuesday, 6 October 2015 21:35 (eight years ago) link

I have no idea about her financial situation, guess she can afford to live in SF. I was going to be medium-term unemployed when we went so didn't want to be kicking around the Macarthur BART or wherever for 2 years so took the plunge and stayed in SF. SF rent was mad enough when we were there, no idea where we'd live if we moved back. Guess that's why we're never moving back.

kinder, Tuesday, 6 October 2015 21:36 (eight years ago) link

which bookstore was that?

not interested in nu-Who but would be down to welcome Ned to the city

xp

Dog-eared -- the last one remaining from the Valencia st heyday. I guess Borderlands is still there, but it didn't open until the 2000s, and I always resented it because I really liked the used clothing store it replaced.

sarahell, Tuesday, 6 October 2015 21:40 (eight years ago) link

oh right, that's come up before I think (I love Borderlands even if they are a little goth-y because I am old school scifi nerd)

idk how Dog-Eared's managed to hold onto that spot tbh. Bunch of bookstores on 24th now, which is nice

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 6 October 2015 21:42 (eight years ago) link

My OH might be visiting SF for work, I am insanely jealous
I've been giving recs to this friend about all the places to eat and now I'm a bit sad I've left that life behind, and also really hungry

kinder, Tuesday, 6 October 2015 21:46 (eight years ago) link

24th St is now home to a lot of Valencia St. refugees + Adobe. It still feels comfortable.

sarahell, Tuesday, 6 October 2015 21:46 (eight years ago) link

If you work in a bookstore you probably can't afford to live in sf.

I keep looking at places for laughs. My friends were living close to the haight - $1200 for a little under 500 sq ft - and their building got sold and now they're living way out on the edge of the city, in a smaller place, paying $1950.

just1n3, Tuesday, 6 October 2015 21:47 (eight years ago) link

haha my last apartment in SF was near the Haight and was $1200 -- for a standard Victorian 2 br.

sarahell, Tuesday, 6 October 2015 21:48 (eight years ago) link

n.b. that was in 1997

sarahell, Tuesday, 6 October 2015 21:48 (eight years ago) link

I paid $275 for a room on the top floor of a Haight St apt building in '96

my roommates were insane though

agree w this. 24th Street's p rockin these days imo. Bookstores, record store, las palmas, wise sons, manivanh

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 6 October 2015 21:52 (eight years ago) link

someone asked me recently about wise sons -- and I tried to summarize your and chaki's argument about it.

sarahell, Tuesday, 6 October 2015 22:00 (eight years ago) link

24 st is feeling more and more valencia-y every time i go there.

chaki (kurt schwitterz), Tuesday, 6 October 2015 22:23 (eight years ago) link

you are otm.

sarahell, Tuesday, 6 October 2015 22:24 (eight years ago) link

Considering I walk down it every day, yes, this is accurate.

Anyway I am fully down with a FAP that has nothing to do with Doctor Who, thanks.

(Tentatively, how do people feel about something this Sunday afternoon? The next few weekends after that will be full one way or another.)

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 6 October 2015 22:32 (eight years ago) link

I think I am going to be in a pumpkin patch sunday afternoon, not sure yet

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 6 October 2015 22:36 (eight years ago) link

I may be, gulp, house-hunting this Sunday, will know more later this week.

:wq (Leee), Tuesday, 6 October 2015 22:39 (eight years ago) link

as a whole, ilx is always invited to drink at radio valencia sunday evenings while i do my show.

chaki (kurt schwitterz), Tuesday, 6 October 2015 22:46 (eight years ago) link

Can't do Sunday, hope to join something in the future.

sounds like Amoeba is not long for the world:
http://m.eastbayexpress.com/oakland/can-legal-weed-save-the-music-industry/Content?oid=4526932

was wondering how they were managing to hang on with what must be huge overhead at those stores

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 7 October 2015 22:48 (eight years ago) link

the Berkeley store has cut its hours in the past few years. I'm guessing the SF store does better because of the Haight St. tourists and general foot traffic, whereas Telegraph Ave. in Berkeley is not what it used to be in that department

sarahell, Wednesday, 7 October 2015 22:54 (eight years ago) link

LA store was doing well last I heard.

Really tough to convince a townie to go to Telegraph these days ime

polyphonic, Wednesday, 7 October 2015 22:57 (eight years ago) link

Imagine how weird it will be ... go grab tacos at Sinaloa, head down to Rasputin for an ice cream, and then over to Amoeba for some indica. Nice little day out on the town.

polyphonic, Wednesday, 7 October 2015 22:58 (eight years ago) link

otoh the parking situation in the evening there is way easier than it used to be

sarahell, Wednesday, 7 October 2015 22:59 (eight years ago) link

I haven't been to Telegraph in years and they don't mention that the other stores are doing badly so yeah idk

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 7 October 2015 23:08 (eight years ago) link

I think rumors about Amoeba going out of business have been around for at least a decade.

chinavision!, Wednesday, 7 October 2015 23:24 (eight years ago) link

though I guess I've never seen them tied to a specific location & in print before

chinavision!, Wednesday, 7 October 2015 23:25 (eight years ago) link

haha I remember when the guy that wrote that article was the music editor of the EB Express and I had to be nice to him

sarahell, Wednesday, 7 October 2015 23:28 (eight years ago) link

the telegraph store these days PALES in comparison to the other two, selection-wise. also that block is totally fucked up. the other street corners on the block are vacant (NE = empty lot; SW = formerly cody's books, vacant for years; NW = building burned down a few years ago, not sure if anything's there yet.)

brimstead, Wednesday, 7 October 2015 23:40 (eight years ago) link

last I was there -- a few weeks ago (didn't buy anything because they were closing earlier than I'd thought they closed) -- the building that burned down was in the process of being rebuilt. I know the owners of Amoeba had been advocating for having something built in that vacant lot for years, but it actually is owned by the owner of Rasputin's (iirc).

sarahell, Wednesday, 7 October 2015 23:52 (eight years ago) link

yeah, ken owns it. he's the worst.

the project he has in development for the cody's space is going to be so bad.

polyphonic, Thursday, 8 October 2015 00:06 (eight years ago) link

what is it?

sarahell, Thursday, 8 October 2015 00:06 (eight years ago) link

lol Russian food is horrible

sarahell, Thursday, 8 October 2015 00:11 (eight years ago) link

In keeping with Rasputin's Russian theme, it would feature a novel take on soviet cuisine. Additionally, he promised a cafe and a venue, with nightly live music of varied genres — except techno — but including rap, as long as it was the conscious, didactic stuff, he explained, citing Tupac Shakur. Furthermore, Sarachan planned on selling media, with particular focus on vinyl records.
