i am going to dig out concrete blonde tape right now

La Lechera, Monday, 1 October 2007 18:17 (sixteen years ago) link

I think she means that someday somebody is going to make you want to say goodbye and turn around (and leave), but don't! Hold on to your codependent! And don't turn around and then say goodbye because the person might not hear you!

horseshoe, Monday, 1 October 2007 18:19 (sixteen years ago) link

Kal Penn's real name was a crossword clue a few weeks ago.

Jordan, Monday, 1 October 2007 18:21 (sixteen years ago) link

but it's so weird because right after that line, she sings, "until then, baby, don't let 'em hold you down and make you cry" as though the moment when someone makes you want to turn around and say goodbye is like, a fateful event that will be some sort of turning point?

horseshoe, Monday, 1 October 2007 18:21 (sixteen years ago) link

I don't know Kal Penn's real name.

horseshoe, Monday, 1 October 2007 18:21 (sixteen years ago) link

she can't be expected to make any sense with that haircut.

La Lechera, Monday, 1 October 2007 18:22 (sixteen years ago) link

Kalpen Modi (an Indian dude I work with reiterates this for some reason)

Jordan, Monday, 1 October 2007 18:22 (sixteen years ago) link

ha! there are people out there more creepily obsessed with kal penn than I!

horseshoe, Monday, 1 October 2007 18:23 (sixteen years ago) link

Kal Penn reminds me of my friend Amar from middle and high school, though last I heard Amar was heavy into martial arts so he's probably not as cool as Kal Penn.

n/a, Monday, 1 October 2007 18:23 (sixteen years ago) link

His dad was a Mountie.

n/a, Monday, 1 October 2007 18:23 (sixteen years ago) link

Amar's, not Kal Penn's (as far as I know).

Oh crap, I thought that was CeCe Peniston.

dan m, Monday, 1 October 2007 18:29 (sixteen years ago) link

Sarah has met CeCe Peniston and I'm sure will tell you the story if you ask her when she's around.

n/a, Monday, 1 October 2007 18:30 (sixteen years ago) link

that is a truly awful name

La Lechera, Monday, 1 October 2007 18:31 (sixteen years ago) link

^^^^this

dan m, Monday, 1 October 2007 18:31 (sixteen years ago) link

I was going to mention that but I thought I'd leave that inevitability up to someone else.

dan m, Monday, 1 October 2007 18:32 (sixteen years ago) link

i never even thought about it until just now when you posted it!

La Lechera, Monday, 1 October 2007 18:32 (sixteen years ago) link

"British Soul Invasion" sounds like it has as much to do with soul as the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion has to do with blues.

kenan, Monday, 1 October 2007 18:33 (sixteen years ago) link

double post but oh well

I was looking for a photo of that curl, 'shoe, and couldn't find it!

Eazy, Monday, 1 October 2007 18:37 (sixteen years ago) link

does that curl have a name?

horseshoe, Monday, 1 October 2007 18:37 (sixteen years ago) link

spit curl

La Lechera, Monday, 1 October 2007 18:38 (sixteen years ago) link

So, we know that Kurt Cobain and Eddie Vedder brought the excess and makeup of hair-metal fashion to an end for male rockers, but who brought the 80s to an end for the women? Alanis, with her natural style?

Eazy, Monday, 1 October 2007 18:38 (sixteen years ago) link

...or, as lisa preferred, "jerome"

La Lechera, Monday, 1 October 2007 18:38 (sixteen years ago) link

THANK YOU, AMANDA!

horseshoe, Monday, 1 October 2007 18:38 (sixteen years ago) link

I was racking my brain to remember.

horseshoe, Monday, 1 October 2007 18:39 (sixteen years ago) link

Lisa Stansfield in that spit curl picture has a very 90s look to her makeup.

horseshoe, Monday, 1 October 2007 18:40 (sixteen years ago) link

haha that was pretty much my makeup in high school. dark eyeliner on top, bright red lipstick, translucent powder to give me that desirable pallor of the dead. if i had had more balls i would have gone for a fake audrey horne mole, but i was too timid. oh high school.

According to CPR this morning, today is the CTA's 60th birthday.

dan m, Monday, 1 October 2007 19:01 (sixteen years ago) link

HBCTA

Jordan, Monday, 1 October 2007 19:06 (sixteen years ago) link

take some geritol because u old, CTA

La Lechera, Monday, 1 October 2007 19:10 (sixteen years ago) link

Srsly.

KitCat, Monday, 1 October 2007 19:13 (sixteen years ago) link

It is aging in dog years apparently. No 60-year old should be so broke down.

Jesse, Monday, 1 October 2007 19:14 (sixteen years ago) link

the CTA is 60 years old, the infrastructure is much much older. it dates back to the time when all the lines were owned by independent companies.

chicago kevin, Monday, 1 October 2007 19:18 (sixteen years ago) link

privatized lolz

kenan, Monday, 1 October 2007 19:23 (sixteen years ago) link

According to the historian they had on to accompany part of the story, the CTA paid for itself (no state funding) for about the first half of its life, up until the 70s or so.

dan m, Monday, 1 October 2007 19:25 (sixteen years ago) link

the CTA paid for itself (no state funding) for about the first half of its life

so what's happening now is... nostalgia?

kenan, Monday, 1 October 2007 19:26 (sixteen years ago) link

i know that the jarvis stop has supposedly not been renovated since like 1908 or something. no wonder it smells strongly of wee.

La Lechera, Monday, 1 October 2007 19:27 (sixteen years ago) link

I know that the infrastructure is olde, but I am taking this opportunity to express frustration through a Lazy Zing.

Jesse, Monday, 1 October 2007 19:28 (sixteen years ago) link

xpost 100-year-old wee, no less

kenan, Monday, 1 October 2007 19:28 (sixteen years ago) link

People just don't wee like they did in the good old days

kenan, Monday, 1 October 2007 19:29 (sixteen years ago) link

I don't understand what you mean by nostalgia. There was a Northwestern civil engineer on the program too, he said the cost of operating two 24-hour lines (maintainence is more expensive and slower), white flight (eroded the sales tax base that paid for part of transit + less fares) and the emergence of private automobiles led to funding crises. Probably some mismanagement in there too, I'd guess.

dan m, Monday, 1 October 2007 19:29 (sixteen years ago) link

that and stupid projects like the bullet train to o'hare that will shave 10 WHOLE MINUTES off of your trip!
