It's literally the fucking emperor's new motherfucking shelf

maybe for an extra $15 they will throw in a carrying case for that one too

j., Saturday, 9 January 2016 05:05 (eight years ago) link

I'm admittedly sort of amused/intrigued by what kind of lifestyle would involve portable table legs, like just showing up places and making insta-tables out of doors or whatever. Junkyard picnicker?

Similarly, why you would need a bed that is extra-easy to move (although not like so easy that you don't still have to carry three presumably moderately heavy pieces of pressboard).

i mean that is legit stupider than the thing on the vinyl scams thread where they slapped some carefully-sourced MDF together and wanted hundreds of dollars for this super-elite turntable stand

Doctor Casino, important war pigeon (Doctor Casino), Saturday, 9 January 2016 17:43 (eight years ago) link

There is probably an edge case where hauling around brackets and legs from dorm to studio to group home to etc etc is more practical than moving whole pieces of furniture - but I don't know if that edge case merits a premium on hardware

El Tomboto, Sunday, 10 January 2016 01:18 (eight years ago) link

edge case also sleeps on a futon

El Tomboto, Sunday, 10 January 2016 01:18 (eight years ago) link

that's where he edges

j., Sunday, 10 January 2016 01:35 (eight years ago) link

but these brackets still have to screw into a wall, right? so what's the big portability angle that they're pushing? that you can clamp in a fence paling?

Flamenco Drop (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 10 January 2016 02:04 (eight years ago) link

I think I might have actually gotten somebody interested in bombfell.com

El Tomboto, Sunday, 10 January 2016 02:16 (eight years ago) link

presumably the corner case is tombot's edge case + the sort of disposable income that buys $36 bookends

idk part of me is like, if this works for them, more power to them. another part is distressed that it seemed like the more rational decision to market The Products Of America's Depressed Manufacturing And Steelworks Industry as $$$ status objects and not cheap-ass things for less markup, more volume

carly rae jetson (thomp), Sunday, 10 January 2016 02:20 (eight years ago) link

otoh i think that amounts to 'why don't they market saving the working classes to the lower middle classes. why is it just the upper middle classes get to feel good about these things.'

carly rae jetson (thomp), Sunday, 10 January 2016 02:21 (eight years ago) link

Man this thing is dumb as hell and obv. way too expensive but tbh I do think about movability a lot when I look at furniture because I move way too often, so I guess their target market is "people who are running from something but SPOILER you can't run from yourself."

I just feel like the "I move every year" demographic is not the "$435 bedframe plz" demographic. I mean I'm a stable professional family man and we still sleep on a simple captains bedframe we got for around $75 off craigslist. And that shit has DRAWERS motherfucker, technology these Floyd folk are still decades away from developing.

on entre O.K. on sort K.O. (man alive), Monday, 11 January 2016 03:06 (eight years ago) link

You could move a lot and get a new shitty coffee table (with the actual table table) from the nearest op-shop or w/e each time before you'd hit $179.

écorché (S-), Wednesday, 13 January 2016 05:39 (eight years ago) link

The clamping furniture is a solid idea, if you could buy it for 1/5th the price at Lowe's and pick out some wood to stain while you're there.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Wednesday, 13 January 2016 07:27 (eight years ago) link

tbh, people moving yearly or bi-yearly should be encouraged to not try to keep up w/ western norms while doing that. Fuck it, get a couple of real Japanese futons, some tatami mats and just live on the floor.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Wednesday, 13 January 2016 07:30 (eight years ago) link

Yeah I'm actually surprised I couldn't easily find (through google) a similar, cheaper version. Shouldn't be much more expensive than any other set of metal table legs. Someone will probably get on that soon.

on entre O.K. on sort K.O. (man alive), Wednesday, 13 January 2016 15:52 (eight years ago) link

Also with all the effort of finding a piece of wood to use you could probably just as easily find a trash-pickable coffee table.

on entre O.K. on sort K.O. (man alive), Wednesday, 13 January 2016 15:53 (eight years ago) link

well you could go to your neighborhood hardware store, but watch out, they might try to upsell you on brackets and clamps, made redundant by your astute long-term investments from the Floyd people.

I had a co-worker who did Blue Apron. Single, 30s, lived alone. Every day or couple of days he'd bring in the sad, snapwared leftovers from the prior night's wasabi sea bass or whatever it was.

on entre O.K. on sort K.O. (man alive), Friday, 15 January 2016 16:25 (eight years ago) link

mmmm wasabi sea bass

been curious about this but don't live/work in fidi:
http://ny.eater.com/2015/4/28/8506595/maple-food-delivery-nyc-david-chang

Basically it's gourmet seamless with no middleman, or I guess really just a fancy but reasonably priced all-delivery restaurant. I had an idea sort of like this once, thinking that you could probably do really good delivery at reasonable prices if you could keep costs down by only having a kitchen and not a storefront (you would probably get a big break on real estate by not needing a visible storefront property or space for tables). I figured internet makes that possible in a way it wasn't before. But I am not David Chang or a person with money to invest in a restaurant.

on entre O.K. on sort K.O. (man alive), Friday, 15 January 2016 17:20 (eight years ago) link

grim irony that a just-in-time service like that only works in an area that's also dense enough that it could provide a take-out meal of similar quality within a short walk

μpright mammal (mh), Friday, 15 January 2016 20:54 (eight years ago) link

Maybe. Not sure you could get something quite that (presumably) good for $12/lunch or $15/dinner in a lot of places in Manhattan (most of which, granted, don't yet have Maple either). There is a place by my midtown office that does sort of an upscale version of deli/steam table, good organic ingredients, etc., and you can get a pretty good dinner there for around $12-15.

on entre O.K. on sort K.O. (man alive), Friday, 15 January 2016 21:08 (eight years ago) link

Probably will succeed because of David Chang's name attached.

a high school friend founded this company. I get Blue Apron, though, because home chef does not deliver to the west coast. it's a great way to force yourself to cook new things. The recipes are also generally solid from these services because so many people are forced to follow them.

not as cheap as actual groceries but cheaper than eating out/delivery, which we're trying to stop doing constantly. and it's healthier, you actually feel guilted into picking the healthier options when you're planning individual meals out a week ahead.

looked into all of them (plated/blue apron/hello fresh etc) and home chef seemed like the best. it's the cheapest and you actually get to choose from a bunch of recipes. it seems like blue apron doesn't even let you pick, they just send you food based on some vague preferences? not spending $12/meal if i can't even pick out food i might like.

hello fresh was the same price as home chef but half as many choices and the food didn't look that good. plated looked great but expensive.

qualx, Saturday, 16 January 2016 06:47 (eight years ago) link

Blue Apron has 3 meat and 3 vegetarian meals to choose from each week. You can choose 3 out of the 6 but some permutations aren't allowed.

I expel a minor traveler's flatulence (Sufjan Grafton), Saturday, 16 January 2016 07:31 (eight years ago) link

ah, the faq says "Once you have set your dietary preferences we will send you three recipes that match your preferences." still. their recipes do look good though

qualx, Saturday, 16 January 2016 07:53 (eight years ago) link

You have to actually cook all these right? Too much work.

Jeff, Saturday, 16 January 2016 11:21 (eight years ago) link

You have to cook, but that's good if you haven't cooked a variety of things at this point and enjoy cooking. It is convenient to not plan a meal and shop for groceries, as well.

xp yeah, they automatically choose 3 meals based on your preferences. But they let you change the menu afterward. We didn't realize this until a few weeks into using it. We skip about half of the weeks because the limited meal selection doesn't always appeal to us.
