I've gone about four years w/o breaking my French press after years of breaking them constantly. Two things that helped: handwashing (and letting it sit on the counter rather than sitting in the sink w/ the rest of the dirty dishes) and stirring with a chopstick / wooden spoon.

will try those things. cheers compu

i only handwash and i don't even stir it. i only break mine through clumsiness/slippy fingers while dishwashing and i haven't done that for about 2 years (success!).

french press uses way too much coffee for me

a (waterface), Thursday, 4 February 2016 14:14 (eight years ago) link

yea i used it for a few months this year until i bought a chemex and fixed my moka pot, it seems so wasteful to use a french press compared to the other two

marcos, Thursday, 4 February 2016 15:40 (eight years ago) link

french press is a lifestyle

lag∞n, Thursday, 4 February 2016 15:44 (eight years ago) link

a lifestyle I want no part of #aeropress #kalitawave

french press is good for company or weekends

weekday mornings i love the quickness of making an intensely strong little cup from the moka pot

marcos, Thursday, 4 February 2016 15:53 (eight years ago) link

I can totally see an NYTimes style piece on whether it's time to "reconsider" the French press, the "older, dowdier sister of the Chemex and the Hario dripper"

I've also been thinking about pitching a piece on the "normcore" appeal of the Mr. Coffee drip machine.

company is the only reason i'd consider getting one at this point --- it's been a drag in the past to do back to back aeropressings, so much nicer to be able to top up and laze around with a bunch of coffee

jason waterfalls (gbx), Thursday, 4 February 2016 18:08 (eight years ago) link

the aeropress experience is pretty unchill tbh

lag∞n, Thursday, 4 February 2016 18:14 (eight years ago) link

it looks a little ~tense~

a (waterface), Thursday, 4 February 2016 18:15 (eight years ago) link

u know what's so chill tho and so perf for company and weekends? Kalita Wave (or pourover of choice) + 800ml Hario carafe, makes enough coff for 3 or 4

police patrol felt the smell of smoke and found that goat burns (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 4 February 2016 20:09 (eight years ago) link

i just use my aeropress for when i'm "on the go" or "on the move" and need a quick coffee.

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Friday, 5 February 2016 00:49 (eight years ago) link

I keep meaning to tell my mom and my partner's mom that their #pourover4life style is all the rage, but I know they'd both just say very practically, "well it is the easiest and best way for me to make coffee."

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Friday, 5 February 2016 00:56 (eight years ago) link

rn I am drinking a Colombian single-origin I made with my v60 and it's probably been too long since I ate because it's giving me the jibblies

petulant dick master (silby), Friday, 5 February 2016 01:08 (eight years ago) link

my mum still busts out the percolator when we have company, i kinda love it

Flamenco Drop (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 5 February 2016 03:54 (eight years ago) link

This thread inspired me to get my moka pot out and wash it for tomorrow morning. I haven't made a decent cup of coffee in years. I know the biggest part of the problem is the cheap-ass beans I buy.

three hours later still thinking of the percolator and dancing

you know what is good is yerba mate

marcos, Wednesday, 17 February 2016 15:32 (eight years ago) link

it is not a substitute for coffee of course but as a late morning drink it is very good and stimulating in a different way than coffee

i am talking about like the real deal yerba mate that south american grocery stores sell in one-pound bags for like $7. not the bottled shit that whole foods sells for $4 a bottle

marcos, Wednesday, 17 February 2016 15:34 (eight years ago) link

I stayed with a friend on vacation who was into that, with the little straw and everything

μpright mammal (mh), Wednesday, 17 February 2016 15:34 (eight years ago) link

yea exactly, the shit that people drink out of gourds in uruguay, paraguay, argentina, and chile

marcos, Wednesday, 17 February 2016 15:35 (eight years ago) link

he apologized for his lack of gourd

μpright mammal (mh), Wednesday, 17 February 2016 15:38 (eight years ago) link

haha

marcos, Wednesday, 17 February 2016 15:42 (eight years ago) link

i actually fake it w/ the gourd, i bought a ceramic one when i was in chile 12 years ago because i used the real gourds and they get really funky

marcos, Wednesday, 17 February 2016 15:42 (eight years ago) link

it is cool though it is like this earthenware "gourd" from this area chile w/ abundant natural clay

*takes a long sip from gourd*

aww yeah gettin' funky now

i always thought mate was kind of a silly affectation deployed by students recently returned from studies abroad in SA but i tried it a bit more when i was actually there myself and dang if it isn't good stuff

jason waterfalls (gbx), Thursday, 18 February 2016 16:53 (eight years ago) link

oh it is certainly a silly affectation deployed by recent study abroads

marcos, Thursday, 18 February 2016 17:01 (eight years ago) link

it is also very good

it is also like ubiquitous in southern cone SA

marcos, Thursday, 18 February 2016 17:01 (eight years ago) link

i would see people riding bicycles with a thermos in one hand and a gourd in the other

marcos, Thursday, 18 February 2016 17:02 (eight years ago) link

Back in the 1990s one of my friends had an Argentinian exchange student who introduced us to mate. After he moved on, I bugged the guys at the local natural foods place about it, but they never got around to figuring out how to order the stuff. All banging my head on the shelf with my eyes crossed trying to find it among the goldenseal and thistle teas.

I've had the Guayaki tea bag stuff, which wasn't all that impressive. Maybe its time to run this stuff down again. Anybody got any recs for a good loose mate source?

how's life, Thursday, 18 February 2016 17:04 (eight years ago) link

mate rules, fuiud

police patrol felt the smell of smoke and found that goat burns (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 18 February 2016 17:05 (eight years ago) link

last 2 times I had it were straight from a thermos my Argentinian landlord was drinking from, and out of a gourd over breakfast w/ this Argentinian dude who I couch-surfed with in Miami. The only thing Argentinians seem to love more than mate is sharing mate w/ other ppl, v hospitable and chill imo.

I think of all of the hot caffeinated beverage cultures, mate totally wins. there's something really trusting and intimate abt sharing a straw or a cup w/ someone.

xps to hows life, just go to hispanic/latino grocery store and you will see cheap bags like this that is way better than anything in a tea bag or bottle:
